About
In 2015 we opened a fully refurbished family restaurant, one of the oldest restaurants in Prague, which still holds it original name – U Mecenase, aka The Maecenas. Come and take a seat under the 16th century vaults. Jan Mydlar, the most famous executioner of Prague, used to sit here in the times of Rudolph II; the wall still bears his signature inscribed in 1626. The original 13th century Lesser Town fortification wall is still visible in the gothic cellars below the restaurant. A non-smoking restaurant with 200 seats in 4 halls, each of them with its specific atmosphere. A smaller private dining room with 25 seats is styled as an Austro-Hungarian imperial salon. Everybody finds their favourite

My brother and I ate at the restaurant on our third evening in Prague. The restaurant is situated in an historic building at the side of a picturesque square in the city. The staff are courteous and efficient and the food and beer superb. I...had soup, followed by the “Malostranský” beer goulash with dumplings and onion. I certainly recommend the restaurant as a good place to eat while in Prague.More

Super authentic Czech food. We had the Prague ham for starters with the baked Camembert and the Goulash for mains with the beef in cream sauce with cranberries. All outstandingly good. Service by Thomas was par excellence! He was friendly, professional and wonderful guide as...well about things to do in Prague. I hope one day he opens his own touring company as we were discussing! Definitely a place to go to for traditional Czech cuisine and to spend a lovely evening watching the world go by whilst sipping a beer!More

U Mecenase is a tavern I always look forward to visiting on any trip to Prague I take ,always had a good time here and so it proved on our latest visit. This is a traditional tavern located in Malostranske Namesti ,in my opinion one...of the most beautiful squares in Prague ,interior is fab, wonderful evocative decor and furnishings and lots of seating options ,it's just a great tavern to unwind in . My twin brother Stephen and I were originally just going to have a beer here but changed our minds and went for a beer and meal, for our meal we chose a pork and potato meal each, beer was served in excellent condition being iced cold and sparkling and after a short wait our meals arrived and what a treat . Pork was beautifully cooked ,seasoned to perfection ,potatoes were absolutely delicious ,a simple meal that was just amazing ,coupled with our beers made for a great dining experience in a fantastic tavern. We really enjoyed our meal and beers in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time,it's easy to locate on Malostranske Namesti ,in the shadow of St Nicholas Church and is well worth checking out if your in the Lesser Town.More

Superb. Wonderful food and charming service. Spoil yourself here. So unassuming from outside but it’s worth looking beyond the small doorway.

We stopped here o a rainy day after visiting the new St. Nicolas Cathedral. The food was delicious and savory. The staff was welcoming! And the menu was in English too. We had traditional braised beef in cream sauce with dumplings and cranberries, Salad with...caramelized beetroot, walnuts, goat cheese mousse and honey dressing, Apple strudel with plum and molasses puree. Great food, don't miss this restaurant.More

I stumbled upon this restaurant by mistake, while on my way from Prague Castle to the Old Town. The exterior, along with the Christmas decoration caught my attention, and the interior was even more beautiful. The walls are decorated with paintings, and the tables are...placed in a way assuring some sort of privacy to the diners. First, I started with the soup, which was great, then came the giant pork knuckle with mashed potatoes. It was terrific! One of the best things I’ve ever tasted. Beer was also good. The service was quick, and the blonde lady who works there was extremely helpful and polite. A trip to Prague without eating a pork knuckle isn’t complete! And this place makes the best one. Finally, prices were very reasonable!More

Regretfully, our party of four shared only one meal in this fine eatery, but it was memorable. The restaurant is in a beautifully restored historical building and layed out to create a fine ambience for modern diners. Though packed with people, our service was warm,...fast and attentive. And the meal of traditional Czech favorites was just superb. We picked different things to taste and learn about the cuisine and all exceeded expectations--beautifully presented and perfectly cooked, we found the pork, beef, duck, plus the cabbage and potato dumpling side dishes, all delicious. Make a reservation to get your table and go.More

We were there two evenings, and really enjoyed ourselves. The duck paté with pickled pears was a smashing starter, and I really enjoyed the beef cheek with dumplings and a yummy onion sauce. On the second evening, we had the duck pate again but we...really felt like something light: the salmon salad with radish and croutons was a great choice, we really enjoyed it. We ended up with apple strudel,More

One of the restaurants in Prague that kept it's name and stayed in the same location. I remember the old restaurant fondly and when they closed up for restoration during one of our visits to Prague, I was disappointed. They did a nice job, and...I am glad that they kept some of the old decor in one of the small rooms. Couple years ago we reserved it for our large family. This time around , my husband and I enjoyed a lovely dinner. Soup , traditional Svickova and Gulas. Panna cotta. Pilsner beer ... In 2017 , we stayed in the apartment in the same building for a last minute extended stay - beautiful suite on the top floor. Till next time, Dekuji a NashledanouMore
