A place where the locals go, and where you can enjoy private dining in the separate chef's table area. General area: - good vibes - good service - good food (advised by waiter) - nice area to discover

I would really recommend a visit here, the service was really good and the food was better then we could have hoped. The portion sizes were so big neither of us managed to finish our mains.
I have lived here for almost 35 years. I remember when this restaurant was the smokey pub that we used to all head down to after work for "just one beer." When I opened the door to enter the new version of this pub, I...was gobsmacked. The interior is absolutely lovely. Art on the walls, modern lighting, enough space between tables for a real conversation (and COVID friendly), and attentive waitstaff. The food was really special. Czech food with a twist. We started with the tripe soup and the pastrami toast. I cannot comment on the tripe soup, but my partner said it was exceptional. The pastrami toast was a creative mix of flavours with spicy chipotle sauce, sour onions, and bitter endive. Loved the combination and would be happy to go back just for that starter and a cold beer when the weather gets better and I can sit out in the garden! For the main course, we both had the veal with dill sauce and "Karlovarsky" dumplings. Again, this did not disappoint. One of the problems with Czech dill sauces is that they can be overly sweet. This sauce was just right and complimented the meat. The size of the portion was good but not the typical overwhelming dumpling dinner. We both were excited to note that we had just enough room left to share a dessert. We had the "caramel egg" which was a real surprise! (If you order one, you will find out why). The combination of chocolate, caramel, and mango was a perfect way to finish the evening and then take a stroll through the Hans Paulka neighborhood before returning home. I would definitely recommend this for people looking for "good Czech food" - whether a tourist or people living here who have guests that want to eat "local."More
Before visiting restaurant we expected a nice meals and pleasant time. Results is completely opposite. Why? Meals was not delicious, tasted very bad. Service was very an balance, 1 service person was fine, 2 so so, the 3 horrible. Temperature in restaurant was very hot,...heating to high. Overall I cannot recommend this restaurant.More
One of the best experiences in last years.Superb cusine (Czech), excellent staff...and cold Pilsen beer in lovely outdoor garden.
Very nice outdoor seating and the food was absolutely amazing. What pleasantly surprised us were the portion sizes (even starters). We left with full bellies and completely satisfied. Thank you for nice and tasty experience, we will definitely come back! 👍😊
Overpraised for average taste food. One of the place where you go just to show you have a money. Very limited menu options.
We wanted to try this restaurant out because of its famous Czech Chef Jan Puncochar. We are not lovers of Czech cuisine but we were satisfied with all three courses. It is obvious that they prepare food from fresh and local ingredients. The staff was...friendly and the prices reasonable. We were satisfied, although we prefer different type of food.More
We popped in here by accident and I really wanted goulash., but was tempted by chicken with Camembert and bacon!! Wasn’t disappointed ....it was lovely! Nice beer and surroundings! Staff could have been friendlier, hence just 4 out of 5!
Awful. Awful Czech food and double the normal price. Awful service. Treated us very badly. Popped in for a quick drink and despite there being about 15 empty tables, were told they were all reserved. Left an hour later, all tables still empty. Very, very...average place.More
If you want to escape the crowded centre and enjoy some really delicious local style food and excellent service, head out to "U Mateje". It's about 25-30 minutes by taxi from the city centre. It's a homey kind of place with a pleasant atmosphere and...it was totally packed on a Thursday evening. I started with some really refreshing pumpkin salad with apples and cream cheese, followed by really delicious buttered zander with grated potatoes and celery salad, and rounded it all up with fantastic chocolate fudge with dates and hazelnuts in red wine sauce. The way the caramel and mango egg is served is quite fun - try it out :)More
Me being born Slovak and matured as Dutch, this place offered the full experience of our visit to Praha as I haven't visited the city since I was 16. St,Martin's celebrations are big in both countries and great food is part of it - U...mateje restaurant didn't disappoint - big big portions and fresh tasty food with typical " buchty" desert was an amazing treat for our bellies !More
Make sure you book fairly in advance coz this place is permanently packed! No wonder as it serves only perfection💯 We came as a group of 9 people + 2 babies (6,5 months and 9,5 months) and were put in a quiet/spacious room on the...ground floor, apart from the lively rest of the restaurant. Duck abundance connected with St. Martin’s festivals brought us there primarily, but I myself got a venison meat with dumplings and grandiose sauce - brilliant in one word! Jan Punčochář - a renowned Czech chef and a 50%-owner of the place - gets it all sorted here, so, except for greatly delicious meals, you can also expect a high-quality service. 5 out of 5, without a doubt! Many thanks, U Matěje:)More
The food was good. The outdoor table on a warm and sunny day was wonderful. The waiter was amicable...too amicable!!! He won our confidence then upsold us incredibly expensive wine. We did not know..maybe we are foolish to trust. We made it clear we wanted...inexpensive wine. We asked twice for wine menu but it never arrived. We asked for the house wine but he brought something leftover from the chef's wedding! I asked how much? He said "don't worry". More fool me! We were charged 40 Euro for an average bottle. Be warned if you are a tourist. They see you coming. They will rip you off.More
I was for the dinner. The interior is rather simply and clean - as for traditional czech pubs should be. The service was excellent (fast, taking care, able to explain etc.. ) Food - starters great ( kapri hranolky, Kachna s merunkami) , main dish...-excellent ( steak), sweet - excellent.More
