At the upper end of Apollonia's lovely pedestrian street, To Steno, is a restaurant, which calls itself officially a 'Café Ouzeri'. There is pleasant outdoor seating in classical Greek tavern chairs on an elevated terrace, to be reached by stairs from the alley. We were welcomed by friendly young staff. There was music from the local radio station.
After we had given our orders a middle-aged man came from the kitchen to our table and introduced himself as 'Manolis'. There was time for a small chat, since the place was not too busy yet. So I told him that the dishes on offer didn't seem to be very much of the Tselementes style. The owner laughed and said that his family name were also Tselementés. Greece's most famous chef till know, Nikolaos Tselementés, originally from the nearby village of Exambela, was apparenty his great-uncle.
His book of recipes, published in the 1930's, remains with over 15 editions Greece's best sold book and a 'Tselementes' is till today synonymous with cookbook. His influence on Greek cuisine was enormous. He tried to eliminate as many Oriental and Ottoman elements as possible, especially regarding spices, and was recommending instead the use of butter, cream, béchamel as in the French cuisine, which he admired. Moussaka, Pastitsio and other Greek dishes popular with tourists are unthinkable without Tselementés.
What we ate at the restaurant here were as starters an Eggplant Salad, which consisted of almost more onions that eggplants and a very coarsely cut Beetroot Salad. We definitely preferred the main courses. A Chicken with Saffron and Red Pepper pieces, which my wife liked very much. I had to order the 'Stuffed Onions', which I had last eaten in Sarajevo and which is not often seen in Greek taverns. It was also tasty, although I would have preferred not to see the same grated cheese on both dishes. At the end a glass of mastic liqueur was offered.

Cool little bar with rooftop view and close to the church. Great to catch the sunset. Very personable waiter; a real character. Limited menu selection but great location and good food. Worth a visit for drinks or food.

What a hidden gem. This was the best cappuccino i had ever had! The food was also so delicious we went back again. We don't normally go to the same place twice. I strongly recommend trying this place . You won't be disappointed.

The food was really great. Even though the place was packed, the wait was minimal.
The staff recommended us some local dishes to try, which were really tasty.
Would definitely visit again in order to try more of their dishes.

The biggest disappointment regarding the issue of food on the island, which is famous for its good cuisine and the origin of "Tselemente". List with few choices. We took a green salad (moderately tasty), tomatoes and cheese (three small pieces bitter, you think happened...), kebap (3 pieces of these supermarket ready served with 3 small pieces of pie, i.e. almost a quarter of the pie for suvlaki, a very small bowl with jizziki / yoghurt -so small that you do not understand what it is and 3 pieces of tomato). No water, no bread on the table, and when we told them the answer was: but you did not ask us for it... then after ten minutes they brought us a basket with little and almost bacon bread. The only positive position, in a quiet relative place. Is it possible to have a name "Clementies" with such indifferent menu and values in heights?
