I am the very patient uncomplaining type. I understand the pandemic conditions we are in; we were the only ones there and there was only one person running the kitchen, probably doing their best. Still, I was depressed by the time I received my food....Food itself was OK.More

All around great experience. Nice pool, nice bar/restaurant. An easy walk to the beach (10 minutes or so). Rooms were spacious and clean. Staff were extremely helpful. Highly recommend the place.

My husband and I visited the restaurant last week, food was delicious and great service. They didn’t have fish cocktail, however the waitress offered us other options and we were happy with our decision. Looking forward to go back!

There was only one night while we were down in Nica that we didn't eat at NicaWaves. Their food was amazing, the service was excellent, and the prices were fair. Many nights the fresh seafood special would be caught from the folks who rented the...NicaWaves boat that very day. Couldn't ask for a better meal and options down there. NicaWaves is an oasis for dinner in Popoyo!More

Location, comfort, cleanliness, security, and affordability designate Nicawaves as a great value to visitors to the Popoyo area. It is set on a private hillside property with security that is a 10 minute walk from the famous surf break Popoyo and about a 25 minute...walk to Playa Santana, a terrific barreling beach break. We enjoyed being away from busier and pricier beachfront accommodations, felt safer and more at peace. Lower lying areas right on the beach have more crowds, more mud when it rains, and more potential risk overall from the odd natural events that can catch folks off guard. This is primarily a surfer's resort, but my non surfing spouse loved it. Although the brief walks to the surf breaks are no big deal because there isn't much to do in town other than surf or fish, we rented an ATV from our host and really enjoyed riding around the area. The food is basic but fresh, well prepared, and affordable, definitely as good as any in the area at this price point. The staff is very friendly and bust their butts to make your stay enjoyable. Enjoy an inclusive package if you're a first timer to Nicaragua or Popoyo so you can get the swing of things but if you're a surfer and have been to Nicaragua once or twice before, go ala carte and explore on your own, it's pretty simple to do and we have a blast discovering things for ourselves. I have been to Popoyo 5x and have always been treated well in my encounters. Always enjoy going back to Nicaragua and feeling the Nicawaves vibes!More

NicaWaves continues to deliver excellent choices of food with a smile. I recommend the local seafood dishes which are caught fresh daily.

My surf buddy and I went here and did the "surf package." My rating is based on that experience (the accommodation itself was more 4 stars). Pros: -we got upgraded to a poolside room at no charge -few issues with power going out, though we...were warned about it in advance -you can eat onsite daily and use hammocks/pool (not just for surf package participants) -rooms are clean -easily do your own thing here if you are a pro surfer and have transportation -large menu for food options Cons: -the surf package did not include surf lessons though the package notes "guides". As beginner surfers, this was an important distinction and we emailed the owner about it with no real result other than having to pay additional for lessons which weren't much guidance/instruction at all. If you are a beginner, this is NOT for you (this was my 4th surf camp experience and the least instruction/guidance I've ever received). The instructors have a super lax schedule (not really abiding to times agreed upon) and are also your drivers, I found them more engaged to get their surf on, rather than give instruction. We were taken in really rough conditions (rocks and rough/fast waves) my first day and spooked us to follow their advice on "good surf" for beginners afterwards. -the "all inclusive" isn't really that and your meals/drinks are counted up by the kitchen staff manually. I found out, luckily, before my last two days that my drinks were "finished" and only had meals leftover. I was able to switch out meals for drinks (water, juices, etc.) but just seemed odd for an all-inclusive package. The food at Mag Rock is better and an incredible view. -Not very central to much so you can't hop over to shopping or restaurants easily (other than Mag Rock which is about a 10 minute walk on a dirt road). I recommend only the lodging.More

Really nice hotel! Nice Rooms and beautiful pool! But was quite disappointed with the food. Tried to get some vegetarian but the waitress did not understand. It ends with a regular vegetable salad, the same as every time... my boyfriend ordered for lunch cheesequesedillas and...said without meat but got a steak inside. For dinner he ordered chicken-taco and got only tortilla and red cabbage! So we hope the restaurant gets better soon!More

We stayed here for four nights at the end of our two-week Nicaraguan trip. The rooms were very nice. We had initially booked the third floor of the Casa Verde, which was nice enough but nothing special. If you are looking for a place to...stay with three people and want to save money by cooking your own meals in the kitchen, this would be a great option. However we were not interested in cooking our own meals so this feature was irrelevant. In addition, there was a shirt walk from the apartment to the restaurant/pool which makes you feel a little removed from the other guests. While the apartment was fine, I would recommend staying at the main resort over the apartment if you have the option. After the first night, we noticed that there was something wrong with the plumbing. We requested to be moved into a room at the main resort not really expecting that this would be possible. To our delight, a room was available and they allowed us to move right away. This was a very kind gesture and speaks to the accommodating nature of the management. We ended up in one of the large rooms right next to the pool (#5). Could not recommend enough. Aircon was great, Wifi was very fast and we had a little table to eat breakfast at. We were a few steps from the pool and the hammocks. This was a treat for us as we had been staying more basic places during the first week of our trip and we loved being able to laze around inside, outside, by the pool, and in the cabana after a long morning of surf. We took 2 lessons during our stay here, with Gerard, the main surfing instructor. He really helped us learn the basics and made sure we "got up" consistently. If you haven't surfed much, I would recommend splurging for a lesson or two as it sucks to drift aimlessly in the waves without catching any good rides. Gerard also gave us a few rides to the surf spots during our stay. I think he felt bad for discouraging me from renting a manual motor bike after watching me try in vain for 15 minutes to start the darn thing. I don't regret skipping the motor bike rental, as I probably avoided a bloody injury and the walk to the beach wasn't that bad. Following the main road takes 10 minutes max to reach Cafe Con Leche/Magnificent Rock Hotel and going through the Finca Popoyo gate gets you to the beginner beach in the same amount of time. Even with two surf boards (we would share the weight of each board by carrying half of each board under both of our arms) the walk was fine and we made it at least twice a day. The food at the hotel was very good, though a tad pricy. Breakfast was 5-6 dollars including coffee and dinner was 9-12 dollars. We ended up buying snacks (Peanut butter, cookies, water) at the market just inland from popoyo road and bought 1-2 meal a day at the hotel. Coffee was good and cold Tona's were pretty much market rate. We found a nice food stand by the beach that we went to a few times and ended up trying the other restaurants around popoyo, of which there aren't too many. The final restaurant tab for 2 people for 3 full days and 4 nights was around 150. My one complaint/suggestion would be for Nicawaves to offer a more affordable airport transfer, as $100 each way is prohibitive for some people. They could at least facilitate calling a city taxi or partner with a local tour agency to offer rides for people who don't need a while pickup truck. Maybe there's a reason for this (the roads are pretty rutted out/flooded along the way we took) but I thought I'd mention it. We made some nice friends at the resort and would definitely stay there again.More

Tried this place out last night and the food was delicious. The service was quick and very attentive. There was a big screen at the bar with a friendly crowd but my lady and I sat outside at the pool area. It was beautiful with...a great breezeMore
