Well-sourced ingredients is where any good food journey begins, so Charlie spencer, head chef and owner of The Poet, ensures we make the most of what the county of Kent and surrounding areas hasto offer. We are very fortunate to have such great quality British produce available to us and it is a pleasure to cook with it. Charlie works with bothmodern and classical methods of cooking, mostly taking influence from British and French cuisine, and to a lesser extent Italian and Spanish.Ultimately Charlie has a drive and passion for food that he wants to share. The Poet at Matfield pub and restaurant, which is situated in the heart of Kent near Tunbridge Wells, offersa warm and comfortable atmosphere to come and experience those efforts.

We had a gift voucher for a 4 course taster menu. Every course was beautifully presented, tasted wonderful and the portion sizes were just perfect. The taster menu was a lovely opportunity to sample dishes we would not usually choose. I'm not a fish lover so was relieved when there was a choice of fillet of beef or bream for... More

Had the most fantastic Sunday lunch at the poet yesterday. This started with an incredibly warm and attentive greeting from the staff and then an amazing meal..... The team are fantastic and I can assure you that words do not do justice to the food. Just go!

Had a gorgeous taster menu meal at The Poet in Matfield just before Chrismas. The flavours were fantastic, the restaurant was welcoming and the staff were excellent. I will definitely be going again.

Came for Sunday lunch for Wife's birthday. Very friendly and attentive staff. No waiting around at all. Very accommodating of our 6 month baby as well. The inside is very quaint and relaxed. Food was amazing. The Poet clearly has some accomplished chefs in house. The pistachio panne cotta was one of the best desserts I've ever tried

Had a great meal here last night. The 4 course taster menu. Two couples were dining and we hadn't seen each other for a while and had lots to catch up on. However the food was so good it stopped the chat in its tracks. A delicious take and pea and ham soup to start, poured at the table no... More

Hadn't been to Matfield for many years and had an invitation to go for a meal with some good friends at the Poet. Welcome excellent. Atmosphere excellent. Service very attentive but not over the top. Menu not extensive but what was on offer was well thought out and something for all tastes. We all chose differently for starters, mains and... More

Loved this place. My first visit was last month and it was on a Groupon deal for four people. I already had high hopes for this gastro pub after hearing a friend's recommendation, but expectations were surpassed by the excellent service and delicious food. Four courses of excellence. Even my mother who is a fussy eater, was raving about the... More

I dined here very recently and had an excellent and well presented meal served by attractive and attentive, but not obstrusive, waitresses. I would have preferred to eat on the bar side of the restaurant which is far more attractive but it was not busy as there were few drinking customers. The back dining room lacks a little atmosphere and... More

This smart and cosy old pub in the Kent countryside, is run by a great team of staff who I really feel went out of their way to welcome and serve us a delicious meal and experience. I telephoned in the week to ask if they could cater for myself and my partner as we both eat vegan, the chef... More
