We were treated to The Poet's amazing five course tasting lunch menu by our lovely friends. The welcome from Andy, as always, was warm and friendly. The garden had been totally refurbished since our last visit with a comfortable relaxed seating area as well as tables with umbrellas, for outside dining where we enjoyed a chilled glass of Prosecco. The ambience... More

I had never eaten here before and a family member invited us for the taster menu. I called them in advance as we had a vegetarian and I have special dietary needs. The chef was amazing. He did a separate menu to cater for our needs. This was a real treat. The food was delicious and the presentation was superb.... More

We visited The Poet last night for a family birthday celebration and were not disappointed. The Poet is a gastropub/restaurant and is well worth a visit. Prices are a bit on the rich side despite the excellent quality of the food, taste over volume. Some Pubs have an annual ‘Beer Fest’, The Poet has a ‘Gin Fest’ with over 20... More

Ate lunch on a quiet Saturday at this gastropub/restaurant. The maitre'd, Andy, was very welcoming and friendly as was the waiter. A nice offering of specialist gins and cocktails and we took a negroni and a geranium gin and tonic, both very nice thank you! Sat on the comfy chesterfields by the fireplace, which would make things very cosy in... More

A significant birthday was celebrated in style at The Poet, wih a fantastic feast thought up and prepared by Chef Petrus and the kitchen staff, and presented by Andy, Katie and the front of house staff. The dietary requirements of one of our party were met with dishes of equal thought, care and flair as the rest of us, and... More

The Poet quietly changed hands earlier this year, so if you haven't been recently, well worth a revisit. I have previously left a poor review for it as I wasn't impressed under the former owners. However I've now been back three times under the new chef, and every time all in our party have had superb food. I think it... More

Another lovely meal at the Poet. As you would hope, the menu had changed since our last visit and we ordered different starters, this time smoked salmon with guacamole for my wife and seared tuna with different sauces for me. We then both had a wonderful cod and chorizo in curried broth ( fantastic ) and very good pannacotta to... More

My wife and I visited this restaurant the day after our wedding. We were not going on honeymoon straight away, and just wanted a nice intimate lunch where we could relax from the previous days festivities! We got exactly that at The Poet. A lovely little table-for-two at the back of the restaurant; attentive staff but not in your face;... More

Great night, first time we have eaten at this pub. The food was of excellent quality and one of the best meals we have had for some time. Staff were very friendly, had a lot of character and really knew their menu and drinks well, offering advice on wines and also the huge list of gins this pub offers. Not... More

Description
Well-sourced ingredients is where any good food journey begins, so Charlie spencer, head chef and owner of The Poet, ensures we make the most of what the county of Kent and surrounding areas hasto offer. We are very fortunate to have such great quality British produce available to us and it is a pleasure to cook with it. Charlie works with bothmodern and classical methods of cooking, mostly taking influence from British and French cuisine, and to a lesser extent Italian and Spanish.Ultimately Charlie has a drive and passion for food that he wants to share. The Poet at Matfield pub and restaurant, which is situated in the heart of Kent near Tunbridge Wells, offersa warm and comfortable atmosphere to come and experience those efforts.
