We ate here twice on a recent trip to the Hunter Valley. We stayed at Bimbadeen Estate Mt View not far out of Cessnock for 3 nights. We ended up here on the recommendation of our host at the Estate. The Royal Oak Hotel has...More

Absolutely fantastic meal. A real gem in Cessnock . The minibus shuttle is fantastic, particularly after having lovely wines.

We booked into the restaurant on a busy Saturday night - we turned up an hour early but they were able to seat us straight away. The waiting staff were wonderful, they really knew the food, and were relaxed and friendly. The food itself is...More

When visiting the Hunter Valley Vineyards make a detour to 221 Restaurant in the main Street of Cessnock. You won't be disappointed. We had the degustation when we were there last & thoroughly enjoyed it. It is honest fare. The third of the four main...More

My birthday is on ANZAC Day, when many nice restaurants, (for some inexplicable reason) are closed. We have been to this restaurant many times, but this was definitely a step up. Our charming waitperson told us there is a new team in the kitchen, and...More

My wife and I had made a booking for the restaurant and when we arrived the waitress offered a confusing alternative to choose between either the restaurant or some other menus which would require NOT sitting in the restaurant but it was up to us?...More

We had a really nice dinner here; the restaurant was well laid out, food was very good and wine was lovely. We had the soft shell crab and the Royal Oak supreme pizza - very good sized portions and tasty.

We had an early visit on Good Friday before the restaurant got busy. The service and food was as exceptional as on previous visits. I always look forward to dinner at 221.

We had booked for 7.00 pm on Saturday night. We arrived at 7.05. The hostess pointed to a table and said that is where you will be seated. So we took ourselves over to table. Then another young lady throw napkins on our laps and...More

Visited on Easter weekend so understand busier than usual but it was obvious. Took a while to be served drinks and while in your average pub that would not be a problem the expectation and price point here creates a higher expectation. Entrees for our...More

Hi Margi, It is not my practice to respond to comments about our Hotel, but I believe on this occasion it's important to respond to your TripAdvisor review. The green King Prawns are supplied to us fresh from the market - size upon availability - at a cost of $37 per kilo on this occasion. Each prawn costs approx $4.00 and they are then shelled by Chefs and prepared for cooking, then deep fried, then plated to be delivered by waitstaff to your table with the accompanied house made pickled vegetables and candied lemon aioli. The entrees are not advertised as shared plates. When delivering meals we always err on the side of generosity. I am sorry that you found your dish less than pleasing size-size. I also noted that you were unhappy with your accommodation in Pokolbin prior to your restaurant reservation. We all in the Hunter Valley try our best to accommodate guests.
