In this post- Covid environment I’m readily prepared to forgive lack of professionalism. But not unforgivable ignorance & being badly treated… especially at place that is supposed to great for seafood. Our waiter began the evening by telling us they’d “ been very busy over...the weekend”… so there were lots of things menu listed one couldn’t have ! Harrumph ! Where’s desk top publishing these days ? Any how he rattled off a seemingly 1/3 of the menu ..& list the wines they’ve run out off too (!) .. then…. Brightly added the evening’s specials. I’m This still thinking about THAT ! We chose as our starter to share, the Chef’s take on the old Cantonese “ Prawn Toast” ..& when it came out it had a previously mystery sauce with it. I enquired of the waiter what the was .? His smartypants rejoiner (incomprehensibly !)was : “It was listed on the menu.. but I’ll ask… “ My husband sarcastically added that a listing hadn’t been possible.. reminding him it was that evening’s Chef’s Special.. that he himself had told us about & THAT that meant it WAS NOT ON THE MENU - the same menu nearly half of which wasn’t even available!! He never apologised. Later when I sent my absurdly overpriced $38 main Crab Dumplings virtually untouched because they were so very appalling .. the best effort in response was to tell me I could have a free drink …! I walked out & around the corner had a pizza .More
Exquisite perfectly balanced seafood dishes. We have been to majority of restaurants in Newcastle and the food at Scottie’s restaurant is 10/10. We had the fresh oysters which had a beautiful kaffir lime dressing, the crab dumplings with pops of ginger and chilli in a...delicious broth (ask for bread!) and the whole baked flounder which was the highlight; the sauce being the best we have ever tried with a simple salad of fresh greens in a simple dressing but perfectly balanced. All of this topped up with home made tiramisu…..we will be back again and again to try to the rest of this menu. The chef really knows their stuff, the staff friendly and the atmosphere romantic with the right lighting and candles. Our new favourite!!More
Great food and atmosphere. I particularly liked the prawn pancakes. The corner booth is great for a group of 5-6. The staff were lovely and very attentive
Do yourself a favour and grab the lobster club sandwich. Lobster, lettuce, onion, hash brown and cheese - it’s perfect. Admittedly it’s not cheap for takeaway style food (tables available but it’s all takeaway). I paid $38 for what’s pictured, on a Sunday though. Still...worth it in my opinion!More
Quality fish+chips in a relaxed outdoor garden. Located on Scott Rd near Light Rail Terminus. Tad pricey
We thought the food was ok though very expensive for what you get. We ordered a dozen oysters for a cost of $48 we were amazed they were very small bistro oysters, not a good start. Fish and chips were ok but expected far better...presentation instead of a small plate of chips with a piece of fish place on top. If we had of known you could eat takeaway there at the tiny table and chairs we might have done that as it could have been cheaperMore
I arrived at the hole in the wall, almost leaning on an alfresco diner to read the menu on the wall, then walked inside and asked if there was another menu, ‘no’ was the reply. Almost all diners were seated outside, so I presumed this...was the expectation. I ordered, after asking a few questions about the menu. My order included sashimi, the fish wrap and a drink. My drink arrived in a glass, then my name was called, I went to the ‘hole in the wall’ and was given my meal in take away containers… 🤷♀️ When I asked if all Mel’s came like this the reply was ‘ I thought you were having take out’ No apology, nothing. Should I therefore take the glass that my drink came in with me?More
Very poor value for money, expensive , poorly presented, a limp undressed salad $13.20 !!a total rip off, told inside resturant was full however many tables inside unoccupied
TLDR; It was a nice experience and good to have some interesting dishes. But for the prices being charged the standard should be better with more attention to detail. I had a takeaway here about 4–5 years ago and remembered it being good. So, I...was keen to dine in again recently. The atmosphere was nice, the music was quite loud though considering how quite the restaurant was. Two of us shared the crab dumplings in broth and battered barramundi with chips ($38 and $28 if I remember correctly). Although it turned out to be enough, the portion sizes didn’t seem that big considering they were the ‘large’ dishes on the menu, and pretty expensive. The crab dumplings were a nice surprise, with interesting, unexpected flavours. Although it was enjoyable, the crab was overpowered by the strong flavours. And it was also a bit over-salted for our tastes. The thing that really let it down was that it was served in a large bowl that was cold, so almost as soon as it reached our table it had cooled down and was too cold. The bowls should be warmed before serving. The battered barramundi was honestly great. Nice light batter, fresh fish, just what you’d expect. The chips were also good, but again, very salty, far too salty for us. Probably too skinny for me too, I’d prefer them thicker, but that’s personal preference. It was nice to see the skin still on the chips, it makes me think they cut them in-house, rather than buying frozen. The tartare sauce was nice accompaniment and seemed like it could’ve been made in-house. With a little more attention to detail it’d probably be 5 stars and would maybe justify the prices. I didn’t pay attention to the takeaway menu, but I’d hope there’s some more affordable options. If so, I’d definitely come back again.More
I have had Scotties on my list to visit for quite a while and so I was looking forward to a visit when a friend came to stay. The service was friendly but incredibly slow and whilst the food was tasty enough it was very...overpriced. We ordered two fish pies, calamari and chips and two potato cakes with 3 drinks and it came to $130.More
Very disappointed all round - booked online & booking confirmed in the restaurant, then turned up to find restaurant closed. Discovered that we were not the only people on the same evening with the same experience. Why not put a notification on the website? Why...not phone back & advise the customer of the change? It was very inconvenient,. To make matters worse the take away food was also disappointing & overpriced for what it was. The customer service didn’t exist. It felt like they simply didn’t care.More
I feel I need to correct you on a few points that you have raised. Yes you booked online and I personally left a message to let you know, last minute, that 3 of my staff had tested positive with COVID and we were unable...More
Have eaten here a few times both inside in the fancy dining space, and outside on the lawn with delicious takeout. This place is a local institution and am never disappointed. The seafood is fresh, and they cater to whatever vibe you are looking for...whether a more formal date night, or a casual summer night under the festoon lights. The lawn is also an amazingly social place.More
At the moment this place seems like an island in a sea of Covid. While other restaurants are closed or making excuses, Scotties is getting on with it. Fantastic food, good service and great atmosphere. Nice work and thanks.
It looks like a lovey friendly restaurant, but we didn’t dine in - we only got take away fish and chips. It was the worst battered fish we have ever had. The batter was so thick and hard, the fish didn’t taste that fresh -...but coated in all that horrible batter it was just terrible. We couldn’t eat it. Such a disappointment.More
