The shared plates we enjoyed were so beautiful - haloumi and figs, and fish croquettes. The service was first class and the atmosphere just perfect. It was a very enjoyable place to have a meal.

Portions are small, designed to share, you will need four and bread to feel as though you have had a meal.( two people ) Flavours were good and the range of tapas was innovative. I had an excellent Rose'. Not cheap, but still worth the...More

Advised that portions were small and design for sharing. This is more of a tapas bar than restaurant. As such it might fill the bill. Bread apparently is charged oer person and then "keeps coming". The first plate was actually toast and when the second...More

Description
Located on New Regent Street, one of Christchurch’s most cherished streets, Shop Eight is an instant classic. One of the few wine bars remaining in the city, though Shop Eight might be small, it punches well above its weight.
The two-level bar has been designed and fitted out by Rekindle; the local social enterprise that re-purposes salvaged timber that would otherwise go to waste, into beautiful furniture and objects. There are table lamps by Joska and Sons of Lyttelton and flowers foraged from Christchurch gardens. It is a fit out that speaks of resourcefulness, a commitment to local craftsmanship and a strong environmental conscience.
Wine, of course, is a standout feature, and Shop Eight boasts one of the city’s more interesting and considered wine lists. Expect a carefully curated selection of exclusively New Zealand wine that has its origins in vineyards that are organic and biodynamic. The wine offerings change regularly. For those more partial to craft beer, the offerings here are good, local and also change frequently.
In a matchbox size kitchen, owner Glenda Clark does an impressive job of preparing delicious and diverse share plates and desserts. Shop Eight is suited perfectly for those wanting to enjoy the social side of sharing a meal. Ingredients are locally and ethically sourced and the menu is designed around complimentary flavours and most dishes can easily be adapted to suit the various dietary requirements of our diners.
Perfect for before or after shows at The Isaac Theatre Royal, bookings are highly recommended for show nights.
There’s little more to want in a wine bar. This is an establishment that is firmly grounded in its roots and proud of its values. Although the kind of place you might expect to find somewhere in Europe, Shop Eight pays homage to and celebrates the city that it is growing up with.
