No.4 Bar & Restaurant is a premium establishment in the heart of Merivale, Christchurch. This friendly neighbourhood gastropub boasts a lively atmosphere throughout the week and into the weekend. We offer great indoor/outdoor areas for catching up with friends and family, or groups will enjoy one of our many function areas. A fantastic venue for both summer and winter, you can relax in a candlelit corner of the restaurant, pull up the couch in the snug library or celebrate with friends in one of our outdoor heated courtyards. Ventured to No 4 in Merivale for Sunday lunch. They have a great lunch menu with a specials blackboard. Food is always good and service excellent. Good wine and beer menu. Free parking close by.

Sunday night. Male waiters “didn’t want to be there” Service slow.. platter long time coming and Luke warm. Having had great experiences on many other occasions a bit disappointed.

Took my manager there a few weeks ago; great setting, decor, and atmosphere. The waitress was plastic-friendly, but cold and maybe a bit condescending. I ordered the fish and chips; the chips I'm 100% sure were from a bag bought at Pak'nSave and, to top it off, they were horrendously prepared and tasted like cardboard. I could have bought better-tasting fish at any corner fish and chip shop. When I checked the receipt, I noticed a ridiculous PayWave charge added without any notification. I felt ripped off because I wasn't informed, which is required by law. When I called them about it, it was evident they didn't care and showed no warmth or genuine hospitality. DON'T GO THERE; DON'T SUPPORT THIS POOR SERVICE AND FOOD.
Then, a week later, I took an international manager there again, but there was no warmth or genuine friendliness from the same waitress. When we paid, an older woman helped us, but she was not friendly at all. Midway through the transaction on EFTPOS, she simply walked off without saying a word or thank you to attend to another customer. We were left baffled and embarrassed and didn't know what to do for a few seconds. We then took the EFTPOS machine and tore off our receipt. It was really pathetic and rude service. My manager was African, and we wondered if this behavior was because of that, because it was simply rude and disrespectful. This place will never see a cent of my or my company's money, and I'll make sure to discourage as many people as I can from going there.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know about your recent experience at No4 Bar. We are disappointed to read your feedback and to know you did not wholly enjoy your time with us.
Regarding your food feedback – we do strive to ensure all our guests leave full and happy, and would have been eager to speak to you about your meal on the day you dined. Your feedback will be passed along to our Executive Chef to investigate and follow up. Please accept our apologies that our (normally delicious) fish and chips was not up to our usual standards.
Regarding your service comments – please know we do have signage on our tills & EFTPOS machines regarding the Paywave & credit card charges. I am sorry that you felt this was not communicated adequately when you dined with us.
We will pass your comments regarding the service onto our Venue Manager to follow up and utilise your comments as further training for our existing staff, as it is never our intention to make anyone feel unwelcome in our establishment. Please know that we welcome everyone into our venue and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind.
We would love the opportunity to welcome you and your colleagues back to our establishment to enjoy our food and service, as it should be. Two for one Bluff oysters today and we certainly had two doz of these tasty morsels. Followed by the beef Wellington, superbly cooked, and Tarimasu. Top rate. Wifey had a 200gm fillet steak with mushroom sauce (annd the blue cheese sauce to keep her options open) and again cooked to perfection.
Server was the lovely Nikki. Lovely to sit outside with a typical Christchurch slight frost in the morning followed by a glorious sunny day.

Reasonable selection of food, cooked to order. Quite a few tables inside as well as out. Lots of TV screens showing sport but it's not overpowering. Service good and polite. We were there mid-week and it was fairly quiet but apparently at the weekend (Saturday) it's really busy. Booking easy online. Would recommend.

There is nothing to fault at
No 4.

Visiting Chch on a week off work and was recommended to visit No 4. There are so many great dishes on offer but I settled for the 350gm ribeye steak which was cooked perfectly ! Was lucky to be served by Bella who gave great service and suggested a fabulous pinot to compliment my meal. Will definitely return when back in Chch and will recommend to all my friends back home
