Lots of character to this place in a semi-industrial, semi-residential area on the north side of town. As you might expect, it has the feel of a Bavarian beer hall, from the layout and decor to the menu and some German staff. We visited at...night so everyone was indoors, in a number of different spaces. On a Tuesday night, the place was busy. It is clearly popular with the locals. I chose the seafood chowder - at $15, a tasty, filling bowl with plenty of seafood in it. My husband went for the beef roulade which came with a generous serving of mash. Afterwards we shared a cheese board. Lots of choice of beers but less of other drinks, but that is probably not surprising. Efficient service, meals came out in good time and we felt we had good value for money. For something just a bit different than your average pub meal, this makes a great choice.More

We had the best value meals at Dodson St. A big bowl of meaty hearty german goulash with bread for $15 . I had the pork schnitzel with trimmings, fries and lovely salad for $15. Fabulous meals. We loved the five tasting platter beer -...with about 24 to choose from it was a wonderful way to spend an evening. It was pretty busy on a thursday evening (with locals) which just goes to show how popular and good it is. Highly recommend for a historical place, with lots of character, good meals and try some new beers. Cheers!More

...but the food was somewhat indifferent. We had the beef roulade and the goulash. Neither had much taste. Staff were pleasamt and the service good.

Great staff and great food in a cozy cozy pub. Prices are great and portion are generous. Had a bretzel as an appetizer and it’s a fun to try all 3 different butter:)

What a fun place to eat! They claim to be "the original real ale house of Marlborough", which is not hard to believe. The decor has the feel of a Bavarian tavern, with beer labels and coasters covering the walls and ceiling rafters, beer barrel...tables, and bricked archways into adjacent rooms. Needless to say, the beer was great...as were our entrees, pork schnitzel and goulash soup. Highly recommended for great ambiance, food, the brews!More

A German style beer hall about 20 minutes walk from town. Was it worth striding out there? I think so, with its fine range of beers, decent food and reasonable prices. It is as much English inspired as German with the fake hand pumps and...we felt quite at home here. Be early - it closes at 9.More

Dear Jeff Thank you for a great review. Please allow me one correction. The hand pumps are actually connected to active taps. They are all hand-made and we are very proud of them. We can proudly state, that everything here at Dodson Street Beer Garden...More

Great pub next door to where we were staying. Pizza was delicious and great selection of beers and wines. Lovely garden with plenty of seating, which made catching up with family even better.

Big beer garden, hearty food and great choice of beers and ciders. You can have a tasting tray of beer/cider if you want which is a great idea. Whist there, because it was outdoors, a few folks decided there should be no restriction on the...noise level of their conversation. But number of families there was a pointer to a high recommendation.More

Great German beer garden and restaurant in the middle of New Zealand. The gaulschesuppe and Hefeweizen were superb. Eat inside or in the beautiful garden. You’ll enjoy it all.

Really weird place with so many things to look at whilst you order and then eat! Great food - huge servings and a big range of beers on tap to compliment the food.
