A very unassuming entrance, leading to a staircase, which opens up to a lovely restaurant, with a small balcony for our AMAZING COCKTAIL - I never have them, so was highly impressed with a fairy-floss sweet and delicious start to our evening. We then got the (before 4.30p.m) $17 late lunch/early dinner special, which consisted of Miso soup, a choice of two starter size yummies, and some coconut rice, which was more than enough for my small appetite...I was so pleased, as I get so embarrassed eating out when I can't finish anything. It seemed enough for my two friends too. Would highly recommend.

My daughter suggested Chow as suitable for a meal to celebrate her 18th and show gratitude to an attentive Godmother over the years. Of course we were running late but pheew reasonable parking across the road. The late stress fizzled out as we entered the restaurant , the lay out and style making it a buzzy sound but private tables and easy to hear the catchup news. Super cocktails , divine taste , such fun. The Asian food arrived hot , fresh traditional and new wave tastes and textures. Taking the option of small plated meant we could share and indulge in many. The summer rolls delicate and fresh. Fish cakes and intricate dipping sauces. Clever mix of personable and professional service. Shot to you Chow ... the evening was super good.

Another great meal at Chow. Our waiter was cheerful and helpful, the food all arrived promptly and was delicious - not a scrap left but the edemame pods and banana leaves when we'd finished! It's been a favourite of ours for years, and we'll be back again.

The spring rolls were soggy and greasy, the dumpling were not at all tasty stodgy, fried chicken had a funny taste , chicken satay sauce was oily and had Chilli, all the sauces appeared to be over seasoned with chilli and very hot …. They were not advertised as being hot …. The fish parcel also tasted of chilli …..It was expensive and very disappointing

We had a terrible time at chow, very disappointed
It was a family birthday party we had young teenagers with us so it was 20 questions even to get them into the restaurant as not all there parents were with them we nearly walked we were a party of 10.
First of a very young untrained hostess we had to ask for someone else we had to ask twice for water our order was a mess and our drinks order was ages in coming. There weren’t enough napkins we spent most of the night trying to attract attention of staff.
The food was poor.
We used to come here a lot but it has really gone backwards and we won’t return.
We felt like we were in a food factory

We had lunch menu with
: soup , dumpling and rice.
my friends food come in complete set and mine were just rice and small soup. i order 2 dumplings, waiting for rice was awhile then 3 pcs dumpling after 20mins and another 3pcs dumpling after 20-30 mins.
my friend finish her meal, while i just had rice and small soup, i felt sad with the wait time took that long.
hope this can be more improve.
its very important to get the set meal come at same time or maybe not too long. maybe the kitchen can be improve with this.

We have to recommend avoiding this restaurant. We stumbled upon it on a busy Sunday evening. It did not necessary appear the restaurant was understaffed rather inefficient. Strike 1: I ordered one of their warm Japanese sakes. Ten minutes later I was told they can't warm up the sake (what? they don't have a stove?) and was offered a cold New Zealand rice wine for twice the price. Strike 2: after approximately 30 minutes of waiting for our order the waitress confessed the orderl had not gone through "on the machine." Strike 3: when the order finally came out we were disappointed. Specifically, the special dumpling/gyoza that we ordered came out deep fried. It is beyond comprehension why a restaurant that boasts approximately eight specialty dumplings, with painstaking detail of their ingredients, would destroy any of those special flavors by deep frying them. The menu DOES NOT say anywhere the dumplings would be deep fried. Additionaly, their buttermilk fried chicken consisted of 5 miniscule, greasy wings which costs roughly 4 dollars per wing. It should be a red flag to anyone who is instructed by the waitress, "we are a small plates restaurant and recommend each person order 2-3 menu items." When menu items costs approximateky $20, it ends up being an overpriced rip off. Finally, if there were a "strike 4" it would be the exit down filthy, carpeted stairs to the back alley door, past the rat kill box, inside the back door.

The food here is great but a little pricey for the serving size. It is the service that is like nothing else I have experienced. It is actually non existent. The staff love smiling and chatting to each other but you will get no eye contact or friendliness as a customer. They won’t look at you to see if you need anything and there is no customer service at all. No smiles. No enjoy your meal. Nothing! It’s so bad it’s laughable. It’s like being at a silent Karen diner. We actually had to laugh about it or we prob would of walked out. They are all young and probably hungover and not interested in being friendly so expect nothing but good pricey food!

Went with some friends as a celebration as this is one of my favourite restaurants! Food and drinks were incredible as always, and service was super quick which was wonderful especially considering how busy it was. Only problem was one of our main waitresses was a bit upset, pulled a lot of faces when we ordered and cut us off speaking a few times. That did ruin the mood a little but it’s still an incredible restaurant and great drinks!

Our family had a fantastic night at Chow. It's a stalwart of the Wellington dining scene, but definitely aren't taking it for granted. We went on the 2 for 1 Monday night deal, an awesome deal in these tough times. We orderi lots of plates to share, and they were all delicious; crispy pork salad and smoky duck curry were highlights. (Be aware they'll take the cheapest plates off the bill for the 2 for 1 deal) Alex was a great waiter, funny and friendly and made us feel right at home. A buzzy atmosphere with great interior fit out. Loved it!

Went there on Saturday. Was very busy even though there were plenty of staff the service was average. Plenty of tables but because of poor management allot of people had to sit out in the cold.
The food at chow more importantly has beyond beyond average. I’ve given it a couple of goes now to see if it was just one night. And it isn’t. The blue cheese wontons taste old. Drinks are fine but they have had a heavy hand on the sour these days. It’s too much. Staffing and food quality need to return.

Because they stuffed up our booking, our group of 12 was squashed into a dungeon-like 'private dining room' downstairs, away from the main restaurant. We felt like we were the naughty kids.
We chose the $50 Xmas menu. The food was average and the way it came out was all over the place. The miso soup came out after everything else. They also forgot a drinks order.
It would have been better for the Xmas menu to do a sharing style menu where the dishes are placed in the middle of the table for everyone to share, as it was hard keeping track of what everyone had ordered when the food came out.
You're better off going to Mr Go's. We went there last night and did their $40 Xmas menu and that was by far a much better experience - food was amazing, more generous and great service.

The food here is seriously overrated, it tastes bland is often served lukewarm. The dumplings are gluey, I couldn't even tell what the filling was supposed to be. The service is so bad (not staff's fault, they are obviously understaffed) but waiting 20 mins to put in a drink order is way too long. And they never clear dirty plates?? Like, at all?? I never leave reviews for restaurants but I hate this place lol I hope my friends never make me come here again

Our curries were brought to the table without the rice we had ordered. I told three different servers as they brought subsequent dishes that we were waiting for rice. It’s coming, it’s coming they said ….. By the time it finally arrived the curries were lukewarm . Really no excuse. It was a busy night but to get the rice from the kitchen to the table shouldn’t be that difficult. Not planning on hurrying back.

A couple of nights back while in Wellington we ordered take away for two. The portions were small for the price charged and part of the order was wrong:
We ordered a papaya salad and ended up with a pork belly salad. The top of the take away container had papaya written on it so it doesn't seem to have been an ordering error.
The quality of the food, that is, the mix of the salad, the flavour of the fish cakes, the flavouring on the edamame was ok: nothing to write home about.
Perhaps Chow do a better job of their eat in meals?
