OK, 149 NZD excluding drinks (apart from tap water) is (extremely) expensive for a buffet-styled lunch, but the eight stands for 8 different restaurants, all offering freshly prepared food. Fresh oysters, different styles of crab, fish and other seafood, ... The key is to go...several (even many) time, each time for a small plate - but mind that you'r given only 2 hours as a maximum (why???? The restaurant was absolutely not full, in contrast to what was said when I made the reservation!). Very friendly staff, exceptional but maybe typically NZL.More

Had made a booking for today originally for 6am breakfast however wanted to change it to 8:30am however it said on the website that I would be contacted shortly which is fine. The restaurant however opens at 6am So I could call to check to...make sure. So from 6am -6:15am I am calling and no one is there to take the call! I then talk to someone else in a different department and he says…. Sorry they are busy? I’m like….. is this not a professional establishment???? How is the poor operations within your hotel my fault? Is there not someone in the hotel that can quickly go into the system to check simple queries? Also is no-one in the restaurant assigned to be at the desk to welcome people and to also take calls? Very unprofessional and displeasing to experience such bad level of service at what is considered to be a 5 star hotel which really is 3 star at best. I stayed here last year as well and was disgusted to find in my room the glasses were NOT clean and had lipstick marks on it!!!!!!!!!!More

We dined here to celebrate a special birthday. We choose the early sitting. We were greeted warmly by the maître’ d and checked in. He asked if we had been previously and if it was a special occasion, both of which we acknowledged. We were...seated straight away. We had to wait for two members of our party so we said we’d wait to order drinks for them. We did find that when the other two diners arrived, nobody came back and offered us drinks and probably at least half way through our sitting we finally managed to get the attention of staff to order a drink. There was a good range of food and the food was high quality. The chef’s at the various kitchens were very busy and it was very hard to get their attention to ask them questions. It actually felt like a very expensive fast food establishment at times. I would not recommend this restaurant for someone with food allergies. Although they catered for allergies and they did ask in the booking if anybody had allergies, it was difficult to manage those needs in this setting. Everywhere was signage saying if you have allergies check with the staff but it seemed so hard to do this. The chef’s were busy, and despite the fact that there were lots of wait staff, it was hard to find one to ask a question and the staff didn’t always seem knowledgeable when I did manage to ask about allergies. There was a great selection of food for those without allergies and the other diners were really happy with the offering. It’s a great opportunity to try a wide range of food, you wouldn’t normally try. A nice touch was the birthday girl getting a birthday brownie at the end of our meal and two staff singing happy birthday to her. Overall, we thought it was ok.More

So there are only 3 types of people that go to a buffet restaurant. 1: Kids, you cant blame them , what an absolutely awesome experience it is for a child to get to try all of those dishes, have the freedom to choose what...ever they want, all the while knowing, in the back of their heads..........the holy grail, a dessert bar with freaking chocolate fountains...which often they are 2 full for. 2: The greedy, If you are upset by reading this...it might be you, but on this night it was also me.... 3: The lazy, also me on this occasion ( how ever I had forgotten how much walking is involved while buffeting) I was staying at the hotel and couldnt face leaving. The reality of being great at eating a buffet is strategic planning before entering, Take small plates, aim for premium goods. Avoid bread and pastas dont drink much, you are here for a good time but not a good dinning experience. I hit up the sashimi, there were only 2 types of fish and not even the employees knew what they were, plenty of sushi was had as well, it was enjoyable and around a decent sushi train quality but not higher. I tried the meats available which we asked for rare to medium rare , they were well done. Meat was tasty agin passable but the portions were sashimi size. Also ate seafood, fries etc. The food was constantly being refilled which was great and the staff were good at clearing plates. Over all it was a fine evening but not memorable in any way. Desert was again good . To summarise it was a perfectly fine evening, there was plenty of food, I didnt need to leave the hotel and the wait staff were there but. the kitchen staff didnt seem to have much knowledge other than the Meat cook... but he still over cooked the meat. Would I go back? If I was as tired and hungry as I was and was staying at the hotel, yes. If I was looking for a excellent dinning experience, there are plenty of other great places to go.More

Dinner here is an expensive buffet with a 2 hour time slot. After 2 hours we were effectively asked to vacate the table despite being half way through dessert and glass of wine and even though people for the second sitting had barely started to...arrive The food is average with meats like lamp rump sliced super thin. The chefs cooking the food were good. We spent almost $300 for 2 people for food as it was a Saturday night. Almost $100 for 5 drinks. It was my birthday and they bought a small piece of cake which was a nice touch. Unfortunately it was bought at about the time we were having dessert and had to vacate the table. If you have this sort of money to spend on a special occasion suggest you look at a fine dining restaurant not this “gobble and go” bun fight.More

We have previously been at the restaurant when we lived in new zealand 9 yrs ago. There have been many changes, and not really for the better. To start we were dressed up because that was what we remembered. On arrival there were people eating...in t shirts and shorts, others in sweatpants and gym wear. We looked out of place with nice shirt and pants. The food. The meat station was absolutely awesome, just as we remembered. Able to eat kangaroo and various other strange meats. You had a small amount and it was cooked for you and perfect. The pasta station reminded me of a buffet. no one was making fresh risotto, it was just a big pan buffett. The sushi was good, and the guy did a great job but it would have been nicier to be able to have a variety of the sushi and then made to order, or at least a variety. The oysters were horrible, and having a stack of oysters out shelled and sitting on ice for a long time ruins the taste. I can tell you they were bad and my entire family agreed, as well as the crab. if there was someone shucking oysters to order, that would have been really good. I thought of all the food poisoning I would have to deal with if I ate the oysters. The other seafood station was a tiny selection of fish and it was not fresh. Dessert table was just a fountain, ice cream and a few cakes. This has gone from an incredible eating experience to a buffett. Although I did give it 3 stars mainly because the staff was awesome and the meat rocked.More

Although there wasn’t a huge choice for vegetarians we enjoyed the buffet at Eight. It was our first experience and the only thing we didn’t like was trying to use the tongs!

Having dined at a number of restaurants with this concept overseas we had high hopes with eight. What a disappointment. Just go elsewhere. Checking in to be seated, the lady we spoke to was so rude. Don’t work in hospitality if people aren’t your thing....The food was lack lustre - the pasta was bland, we didn’t try the pizza as when you’re paying $139pp you can get pizza anywhere. They have a seafood station which has frozen thawed product, nothing tasted fresh rather everything was watery. The sushi looked like it was homemade opposed to being restaurant quality - it was uneven, fell apart when you picked it up and the so called sashimi station was one plate of raw fish that seemed available occasionally. The American grill - what a joke? There is such a long queue that most people gave up waiting. The butter chicken in the curry section could have been from a jar. Seriously the best thing I ate was a bread roll. So disappointing when you’re expecting a culinary experience and you get this. Book elsewhere - like Cafe Hanoi - their food is delicious.More

Visiting Auckland from Canada, my husband and I stumbled upon a fabulous Mediterranean restaurant right around the corner from our hotel, located at 53 Gore Street. I have allergies and intolerances which were honoured there without a fuss. Food was fresh and delicious, sensitively seasoned,...and nicely presented. All staff were pleasant and friendly. We only wish we were staying longer in Auckland. We'd certainly be back!More

Last evening, my wife, son and I had dinner at Eight restaurant. This was actually the third visit to "Eight" and I must say we were so disappointed with the second grade quality of certain foods. First of all, the crab was disgusting as it...had been cooked previously, then deeply frozen, thawed and served. That turned the crab into a watery whits "meat" that was stuck to the shell and totally flavorless. Secondly, the oysters for this time of the year are notes for not being at their premium quality but every oyster was shucked poorly because of shell in the oyster. Thirdly, the beef Scotch fillet, was not up to the grade because of the fillet being tough. Fourthly, the ice cream scoop dip water looked absolutely disgusting, more like a thin soup. Those scoops should be cleaned with fresh running water, not a pool of thin cream. So with the buffet, two Monteith ales and one ginger beer, the billing came to $380.00 which if the buffet was quality, I wouldn't mind, but with very poor quality ... very disappointing to say the least.More
