We did not have a reservation but they seated us anyway. Tried two of their Entrée: - Tuna Ceviche with pickled ginger gel, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, coconut cream, crispy shallots, & sriracha oil - Eye Fillet Carpaccio with Mandy's horseradish cream, baby capers, manchego, croutons,...& watercress Both were very good and very well presented. Tuna had enough acidity and 'tanginess' and the beef was melt in your mouth. For mains we both had the 'Butcher's Selection Premium Beef Cut with truffle-mayonnaise, shiitake mushrooms, baby onions, garlic crumble, & port jus'. Hubby had his medium rare and I had it medium. again, no fault to find. The truffle may was creamy. Could not taste the garlic in the crumble though but altogether, it was still delicious. For dessert we, I had the 'Ginger Crème Brûlée with almond crisp & raspberry sorbet' - really creamy brulee. On its own,the raspberry sorbet was a little flat. Hubby had the 3 scoops of Chefs Selection of Housemade Ice Cream which was vanilla, chocolate and a blood orange sorbet. He said the blood orange sorbet was sweet, tangy and just the best. Overall, will definitely recommend to have a go. Great service and good food.More

I had a solid time on Mother's Day here! Although prices may look scary on their menu, they have more affordable meals from their a la carte/all-day bar menu, and it's delicious! Their service was impeccable - I didn't get the names of the two...women looking after my family and me, but they were on point. They were funny and natural and made the environment feel a lot more homely despite it being a fine-dining establishment. The outside environment reminds you of Rotorua's mudpools, and I'm not sure why - I should've asked - but the smell doesn't linger inside for too long. You eventually are sat in a warm and inviting dining area with lovely lights, comfy seats and a decorative interior (Although it would be nice to have more butterfly decorations). There is an eating area outside, which looks nice as well. However, you've got to stand the mud pool stench if you want to be sat there. All-in-all, a great place to eat out if you want to try something new and affordable in the city. It's a street across from the viaduct, so feel free to eat and then enjoy the view with a little walk after all the food and drinks you've consumed.More

We were disappointed in the Trip Advisor reviews, which we usually have very good experience with. This meal was unbelievably awful. We felt sick after it.The shrimp had their full body shells, head to tails, and couldn't be peeled. The lamb ribs were VERY fatty. I'm...sorry, but we can not give a good review.More

If you're looking for an excellent restaurant near the waterfront, look no further than Beast & Butterflies. This place serves up impeccably plated appetizers and meats. We ordered starters including chicken liver, beef tartare and a ceviche - which were all eaten quickly. Then came...the mains - the most impressive being the lamb and the beef fillet. The meat was tender and a showcase for New Zealand livestock. Despite a party of 11, a service was fast, attentive, friendly and helpful. The value was good, even though they started running out of cheese to feed us at the end of dinner. More honeycomb on our cheese platters would be a nice touch - we don’t get those much anywhere. The wine selection was solid.More

We celebrated a special birthday. 29 guests, family & friends aged from 17 to 80. Some a bit rowdy. The venue was perfect and some of us stayed there at MSocial hotel. We had a set menu which was really great with good choices. The...waitress coped exceptionally well with our noisy crowd & was cheerful & friendly.More

Rainer was welcoming and hospitable. He provided helpful answers to our questions about the menu. The atmosphere and background music coupled with our conversation and connection with him provided a memorable ending to our visit in New Zealand. As suggested, we took a walk on...the pier for one last look at the city. Many thanks!More
