Shark Fin House yum Cha has one of the best variety- need to order from the kitchen if you want something they don't have on their trolleys and the chef will make from scratch so you know the food is fresh! Actually quite reasonably priced compared with other restaurants in city. Service has always been excellent and waitresses try to... More

Well, we love yum Cha, and this Restraurant has successfully ruined it for us, more specifically, one waiter(or maitre'd) did. He's 30ish with glasses. PEOPLE, AVOID HIM. They honestly have good food, one of the best yum Cha places we've been to. And we've been to a lot. And the most of their staffs are not as bossy and rude... More

We were looking for a place in Chinatown to have a yum cha brunch and walked the whole strip before we went back to this place as it appeared to be only one of a few to be open. We got a table straight away, ate until we popped (and we were hungry) and it only cost us $46.00 including... More

We had lunch and dinner in shark fin house yesterday, foods were great, somehow I think is even better than Hong Kong, ingredients were fresh and cooking skills were great, I ordered abalone and oysters last night, taste was stunning, even the sweet and sour pork was much better than Hong Kong, most importantly, very very reasonable price. A must... More

This evening we had dinner here as we typically do when we are in Melbourne. Service was brilliant, but this should be expected on a Sunday night. Entrees ere brilliant except for the fact we had to remind them they missed the dumplings my wife ordered. The mains were great, but they had to recook/reheat my meal as it was... More

The Yum Cha menu is good. I especially liked the eggplant and red bean pancakes. The footballs and the chive and seafood dumplings are very good. There are plenty of Sichuan dishes as well if you prefer main meals to yum cha. The Prawn dished are nice. I didn't like the abalone, though. If you attend during the daytry the... More

We went to Shark Fin House before seeing the Sound of Music. The staff were very attentive to ensure our meals were served in plenty of time to make the show. When the food arrived - Wow! So delicious and fresh. Thank you for an enjoyable evening.

I remember fondly many yumcha's and dinners at this Hong Kong restaurant in Melbourne Chinatown. This visit 9 years later was slightly disappointing. The garoupa fish fillet with vegetables was a bit chewy and slightly smelly. There was a bit too much batter in the pork chops with sweet sauce. The claypot vegetables could do with a bit more flavour... More

Very popular place located in the upper part of Chinatown. Over the weekend, the place opens at 11.00 and there is already a large queue. The restaurant is over 3 floors. The tables are very (too?) close to each other. The service is okay, pirces are okay. Food if fine but slow to get a good selection. Overall it is... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighborhood Profile
Chinatown
Locals know that Chinatown is the tried and true place to eat before hitting the nightclub scene. The place simply buzzes, and the well-preserved buildings exude a sense of Imperial China stemming from immigration over a century ago. In restaurant after restaurant on Little Bourke Street, you'll find delicious dishes such as sizzling honeyed prawns, and value for your money. Stately matrons oversee family kitchens serving up age-old recipes. The lighting may be unromantic, the patrons loud, and the service no-nonsense, but the food is sensational.
