Japanese cuisine in Melbourne is a funny thing, or things really. It ranges from the ubiquitous $10 takeaway sushi/sashimi packs which are mostly mass-produced in the suburbs and shipped in en masse to the CBD early every day, through new style hip Japanese restaurants serving mainly sushi or ramen noodles, to contemporary Japanese fusion. But Kenzan stands a bit apart... More

This restaurant has delicious traditional quality Japanese food, great Sake menu and extremely friendly service. The sushi and sashimi platter was mouth watering (picture attached). We also had the eye fillet and fried chicken for mains which were equally delicious. The service was faultless, water glasses were regularly filled without us even noticing. The restaurant has a main dining areas,... More

Great little Japanese in the heart of the city .... Good food, excellent service and divine sashimi .... A little hard to find because it is at the back of a shopping mall but well worth the trip.

Have been coming here for over 20 years. Nestled within the 45 Collins Street precinct.....aka Paris end of Collins..the Kenzan never disappoints. Serving the freshest sushi and sashimi, Bento Box, Miso ....you name it, the Kenzan has it. But I must say I always must have a serving of the Negi Gyunikumaki.....SUPERB !!!!! Staff are always extremely attentive and smiling,... More

Delicate, elegant and delicious. Sashimi is perfect, cha wan mushi taste like silk, noodles and rice dishes are delicious and the sukiyaki and shabu shabu is equally good! I've been here more than 100 times I reckon!

Thought the sushi was really nice, entrees were very tasty, but the selection of fish (especially on the sashimi plate) was definitely disappointing. I expected (and am used to) a lot more variety at expensive japanese restaurants. Wpuld give it a 3.5 but the green tea and black sesame icecream were so awesome for dessert it bumps my rating up... As a Japanese restaurant goes this is a firm favourite! Staff are fantastic and attentive without being in your face. Sushi is fantastic, clean and fresh as it should be and the sukiyaki is sensational!! Been a good few times now and be it take away or eat in the food is never compromised! Can't wait for my next visit!

We went with a Japanese lady who guided us through the menu and choices. She explained about the teapots that the tea was brought in, that they are very sought after, made by hand, are very expensive and you have to wait at least a year to purchase one after ordering. Fascinating. We also could have eaten on a tatami... More

I love going to Kenzan. Tonight I had a light as a feather prawn miso, delicate in flavour and delicious. I also had my favourite chicken teriyaki and steamed rice. The teriyaki was so delicious and quite a generous serving. The rice was superbly cooked. Staff are always very polite and attentive, bringing a complementary appetiser which is cold in... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
