Seeing the crowds, this cafe Cavallino pizzeria must be good. We order seafood and a plain pizza. Toppings are generous and the crust is crispy thin. This is so good.

We visited yesterday, and the meals were not great. The 4 cheese gnocchi was very nice, but the other 4 dishes were average at best. The service however was excellent. We would not return in a hurry.

We took a punt on Cavallino from the many Italian restaurants on Lygon St due to their claims of 'authentic' Italian food. Little did we know it would completely ruin our evening. We ordered garlic bread to start, which was essentially four pieces of tasteless cardboard. Following this we both had pasta dishes - one seafood, one Salami. After a... More

All pasta dishes were over cooked, slimy and completely not edible. We sent the food back with feedback and got yelled at, cursed at and questioned if we were "chefs" and if we answered no then our opinion of their food meant nothing. The staff were unbelievably rude, called us thieves, called the police to which they laughed at the... More

The décor is a bit over the top but hugely entertaining. The waitresses were very delightful, obliging and efficient. One was a French girl from Paris and the other was from Salerno so I was able to practise both my French and Italian. I was desperate for a pizza and so was my son. I had a medium Napoli and... Ordered the Lygon special medium size pizza for two (not that hungry) and garlic bread to take away. The pizza was good and hot, very tasty. The garlic bread was disgusting. Tasted like stale bread - very disappointing. The restaurant was busy and stuff were pushing past in a narrow passage near the counter. Racing car theme throughout the restaurant.... More

On a very warm day we had to wait 20 minutes whilst 2 waiters stood directly behind us without asking if we wanted drinks! Pizza was tasteless.

Average prices. Food was okay, not great. Sitting outside we had smokers on other tables either side which was not pleasant. Will not be back.

Looking for a reasonably priced restaurant in Lygon St and after reading a few reviews Cafe Cavallino was where we ended up. We had a few pizzas and pastas between the family and the teenage kids loved all of it. Service was good and the food authentic. Questioned the pizza bases - they were tasty but I personally prefer wood... More

Staying in Lygon Street

Neighborhood Profile
Lygon Street
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighborhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.
