This is the best place I've found for brekky in Melbourne. The baked eggs are delicious but there is plenty of other yummy things on the menu (lobster benedict). Coffee is also great.

I am here on a raining Wednesday and the cafe wasn't full. So I walked in and ask for a sit and got told by a waitress I have to wait outside. For me it's not a good experience from the start, then once I sit and order coffee and croquet madam. The service is fast and the food arrived... More

This charming cafe is quintessential Melbourne. Fabulous coffee, gorgeous staff, and the European menus is spot on. We had the baked eggs 'deux' with chorizo, and the scrambled eggs with house cured smoked salmon on blini with ground boudin noir and creme fraiche. An ENORMOUS serve and just delicious. Service was friendly and fast - many thanks.

On a weekend away in Melbourne I searched for a great breakfast place. Staying near the Queen Victoria Markets , The Hardware Societe is only a 10min stroll. At 8am the queue had already formed but was very easy to get a seat. The staff take you through the menu and the specials on the day sounded fantastic. I opted... More

For a few years I've been wanting to try Hardware Society due to the high recommendations on TA but I must say seeing the queue (every time!) put me off as im too hungry to wait!! Last week during my visit to Melbourne, I waited...and it was worth it! I agree with some reviews that the must haves - baked... More

Went here as so highly rated on trip advisor. Must say I don't see why so much hype? Service quite poor. No one seemed bothered about us wanting to come here to eat. Just typical get people in and out of the door as quick as possible...nothing personal about it Coffee was poor. Yes the Melbourne standard of coffee is... More

Melbourne is famous for their cafe and during our trip, cafe hopping for brunch is one of our to-do-list. Hardware Societe is highly recommended and had many great reviews so we decided to give it a try. There was a queue on Sunday morning and we waited about an hour for the table. Coffee is great as are most cafe... More

Waited for an hour outside on a busy Sunday morning, but ohh it was soo worth the wait. Friendly staff, great food and an awesome coffee. Loved it. Highly recommended.

Great coffee, vibe, and food. There is sometimes a small line up to get in, but well worth the wait.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
