Portello is one of my favourite restaurants in the city and I visit every few months if I can. Definitely recommend the chef selection - 5 courses of beautiful food, if not go for the crispy pork belly my favourite !

We went to this place for the first time, very enthusiastic to bring our friends for a nice paella. To start we had tapas, very average for the price. Then came the paella What a let-down! Half of the dish was CHARRED, the Rice was UNDERCOOKED, the prawns were TASTELESS, the mussels were RUBBERY. We couldn't even finish this dish... More

We were told that this was rated as one of the top Tapas places in Melbourne, maybe we went on a bad night. We were booked for the later sitting (they do dinner in 2 sittings), we were ushered to the upstairs area and the waitress gave us drink menus and said she would be back shortly, We had been... Very tasty Spanish tapas restaurant. Very friendly & helpful staff. Not cheap, no BYO. Located in laneway.

We loved this place. Try the lamb ribs and the chorizo - incredible. Team there were great and clearly got on well with eachother. Kitchen team were fun also (we sat nearby). Start with some sangria and then enjoy some delicious spanish red. We'll be back, and would certainly recommend to anyone.

My wife and I had dinner here and were enjoying it. The pork belly was awesome. All and all was a positive experience until we ordered desert. We ordered churros and the pudding with two desert wines. Our desert wines came out while the mains were being finished. We recieved our churros which was nice with our now warming desert... More

We dropped into this hideaway restaurant for a couple of drinks and a light meal prior to attending a function nearby. With no tables available, we were happy to secure a seat at the bar which was fine with us. With a glass of bubbles and a delightful beer of the week (Ambar Caesar Augusta) at hand, we perused the... Lovely place, so pleased to get a table. Had the chefs recommendation at $66 each. This provided masses of tasty food. Favourites include the pork belly & olives. The ginger and chilli sangria was very good too. Good service.

Went here with 2 friends - an Italian lady and her Spanish boyfriend so we could receive genuine European appraisal of the food. We all loved the tapas, a beautiful charcuterie board with terrine and amazing wine menu. The seafood paella was a little disappointing however, lacking in flavour with overcooked seafood and burnt bottom but we still had an... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
