Went there with 3 friends before the football, so were in early at 6 pm. There was already a few people in there. I am not from Melbourne, but this was my 3rd time here, the last being 18 months ago. If I was to rate the food only, I would rate it much much higher. The taste of the... More

We had the home made Calabrese gnocchi and Gorgonzola gnocchi, out of this world. The anti-pasto was a little expensive but the meal came to around $100 with a bottle of wine, bruscetta, pannacota and an esspresso. Great service, great atmosphere, amazing food, great wine and right in the centre of everything. This place was recommended to us by a... More

Dropped in to the Waiters for a quick bite prior to the theatre. Great food, inexpensive and friendly service. Be warned the steep steps would be impossible for people with an ambulatory disability.

When you want a hearty and tasty home cooked meal experience. This is the place to go. Don't be put off by the stairs or the wooden door at the top. It's not slick or nouveau it's homely and popular. We were there on a wed night. They were turning people away what does that tell you.

Up rickety stairs into a crowded room with wooden tables and lots of atmosphere . This restaurant is a hidden gem. Service with a smile and great food . Huge portions of delicious home cooked Italian food at great prices . Don't expect any frills ( wine is red or white BUT good Italian plonk!) but we had a lovely... More

Very authentic no fuss Italian food. not on a main street but well worth the effort to find it. No menus as such. Daily offerings are on paper on the wall. Plenty to choose from but on our visit no seafood entrees were listed. Servings are plentiful and tasty. Service is friendly and efficient. Corkage is very moderate. Thoroughly recommended... More

You would be VERY lucky to find another place in the Melbourne CBD serving decent food at anywhere near these prices! A long-standing institution, for good reason. You may even see some celebs dining here.

We have eaten at this restaurant on our annual Melbourne visits, this time with friends. No frills, no graces. Good honest Italian food, minimalist decor, and we get what you pay for- delicious, home cooked style food. No corkage, and great value. We love it and will definitely go back on each Melbourne trip. Our friends, first timers, were equally... More

OK, so this is a basic place up a steep flight of stairs. Hard to get a table because the food is good, very good. But there are definitely no airs and graces here. It is a hall filled with tables and chairs you can barely squeeze between. The food is Italian and the menu absolutely immense. I have never... More

This was one of our most satisfying meals. We showed up with a large party and no reservations but the staff did their best to accommodate us. The food was consistently good, especially the Amatriciana. Would definitely go back!

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
