Good Italian food at a reasonable price

Up the Spartan staircase of Meyers Pl is the Waiters Restaurant. Utilitarian tables & chairs fit out an unadorned room. It was 7.30pm on a Tuesday night and the place was half full with a mature crowd with plenty of room for a single diner. No priced menu is circulated but the house specialities... read more

I often call in and have a meal at the Waiters Club when I am visiting Melbourne. Sad to say my first visit for 2016 was disappointing. The new decor now means the unique ambiance of the Waiters is lost. Allowing for progress we ordered our food which has never let us down. However this time it was also a... More

I absolutely LOVE this place, so AUTHENTIC! As soon as I entered it, it felt like being back in the 80'ies — in a good sense :) The interior design is nothing fancy, but that's what adds charm to the whole experience. Service — fantastic! So friendly. Food — amazing! Got served wine (glass filled to the very top, my... More

I went recommended by my brother, who visited the city a couple of years ago and told me not to miss this place. It is not easy to find and once you walk in it seems that you are going backwards on time...but the food is just delicious!

A fantastic experience. Very crowded, which gave a great atmosphere, although if we hadn't been taken there we wouldn't have found it. Old style Italian food, which was fantastic, although the garlic bread was very stale. Loved the simple setting & it even has bullet holes in the walls. Ask the waiters to recommend a dish. But I think all... More

This restaurant has to be seen to be believed. If you want to experience Melbourne Italian food from the 60s go here. This is an iconic restaurant that does Melbourne 60s food brilliantly. If you are looking for flashy service and a modern fit out DO NOT GO HERE AND COMPLAIN. If you want the best of what was on... More

I get that it's a no frills restaurant ...service was quick and dismissive...glasses similar to Vegemite jars, but an Italian themed restaurant who doesn't know how to make a minestrone soup?frozen mixed veggies doesn't count....and very pricey...it didn't open until 6 so we went over the road to a cute little bar/cafe for a coffee before we ate...regret not staying there

I had a great meal with friends here. It is certainly back to basics with laminex tables and an old menu on the wall that looked like it had been there forever. While there was nothing fancy about this place it provided no nonsense food and plenty of atmosphere.

Don't come expecting fancy decor. It is a very simple affair here- hearty Italian home style food in a retro decor. We had the Gorgonzola gnocchi and spaghetti and the sole looked great as well. Dessert is adequate. Quite busy, so do book ahead or one early. It is up a narrow staircase next to 20 Meyers Place.

If you are looking for beautiful decor and no noise then this is not for you. Its very narrow and small with mismatching furniture and walls that need painting. It is very hard to hear conversations over everyone's chatter in such a confined space. The food is not really cheap but the serves are rather generous and the taste very... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
