I have gone to degraves espresso for the past decade and it pretty much hasn't changed, which is a good thing. It's far from perfect but slightly comforting. There's a nice atmosphere of young creative, conventionally alternative types who smoke too many cigarettes outside. You don't want to sit inside as it's noisy and the seats are very hard and... I love squeezing in to this tiny hole in the wall at a table with mismatched chairs! The coffee is excellent and the food is great. No matter how packed it is, the service is fast and friendly.

It was our first time at Degraves Street and we decided to try out Degraves Espresso Bar for dinner. Food was alright - we tried the Risotto (a little bland), Paella and Lamb Shank. Service was ok could have been better but first time experience dining in the middle of a lane was good.

I recently had calamari and a glass of wine at Degraves Espresso Bar. The atmosphere inDegraves Street is fantastic, and so was the calamari. The bar does however have a small wine list which is a little disappointing. The staff were friendly but the service was not the best. We had a to call the staff over a number of... More

Service was terrible. There was clearly no communication between kitchen and wait staff. Order the Chicken Parma, it was sent to the wrong table. It was then eaten by another customer. Upon enquiring the third time, a waiter was able to tell me that there was a mix up and now they were all out of Parma's. I then ordered... More

A few things... #1 Food was varied - my green eggs were top notch but my buddies both expressed their dissatisfaction with their food. #2 - Coffee was average and the waitress could not even tell the difference between a mocha and a cappuccino and a mocha. Disgrace. #3 - Service was varied - the guy was great but the... More

Tried to get into Supernormal and the wait was too long (also had bent there before) so we decided to drop into Degraves Street instead to see what we could find. Came across this great little place that offers a Tapas plate with a choice of three options for $32. I had the eggplant, the bruscetta and the chorizo. My... More

Fantastic coffee and service! Service was quick, prices great and we went back every day on our trip to have the coffee as it's the best we've tasted so smooth.

This little place is a hidden treasure. Though we didn't try the food we did have a coffee and this was the first time in my life that I have actually left a tip.

My wife and I often stay over in Melbourne after an evening of theatre and walk down to Degraves Street for breakfast. On a Sunday morning the place is pumping! Competition is fierce so you can't get a bad coffee and all forms of a cooked breakfast will always please but weight watchers be careful!

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
