We just went to the Malaya for a work lunch and were told that there would be a mandatory "service charge" of 8% for a "tip". Seemed a bit odd to me because this is not normal practice in Australia. Nothing in the demeanour of the staff made me think the service was likely to be worth paying a tip... More

Love the eggplant szechuan. Highly recommended, especially for consistency and taste. Staff are friendly and efficient, food comes hot (temperature) and spicy from the open kitchen. Not all dishes are equally successful, but the signature dishes are very good, and there is a separate vegetarian menu. Sticky rice puddings (fruity with cream on top) are an inexpensive but delightful dessert.... More

The thought of a meal at The Malaya has always been something to get excited about as it never fails to deliver...in spades! With its open kitchen you can watch the chefs create their tasty masterpieces but make sure you try one of their signature dishes such as Szechuan Eggplant or Coconut Beef Rendang. These exquisite dishes are served by... More

What wonderful food. The Schezuan Egglant is just amazing... even those who don't like eggplant ask to take some home...as well as the seafood sun choy bow ... yum! As for the Malayatini... just wonderful but so easy to drink too many so make sure you grab a cab home but well worth it. On top of all this ask... More

Had a lovely lunch with my colleagues , the food and company was very enjoyable and all with a view of darling harbour , this stylish restaurant serves up high quality Malaysian fair. We had the banquet which gave us a board taste of the menu at a reasonable price considering the location and quality.

When you make a booking weeks out and ask for a table on the balcony you expect it to be noted, maybe not actioned right away but noted, and so when you arrive and find your table about as far away from the balcony as they could make it then things are not off to a good start. To be... More

Ordered Beef Rendang. Good flavours but the dish was let down by some chewy pieces of meat. Salmon entree was nice but overpriced at $20 for what you get. Thought the food was a little overpriced relative to quality. Service was formal and prompt.

Having eaten at the 1st Restaurant as a student, the 2nd as a young city worker this was my 1st visit to the 3rd location and it didn't disappoint with traditional and new dishes wonderfully presented and served with a style that put the pervious 2 sites to shame - A really pleasant experience

A long time favoured restaurant of our family - we used to go to The Malaya when it was in George Street, well before even thinking of kids, and now they are all grown up! And what do we order? We are so boring - the same thing as 45 years ago! Atak Atak as a fiery entree, then King... More

From the salt & pepper prawns, to the curries (prawn & beef), our mouths were on a taste sensation. Then came their signature dish which was eggplant & was crunchy on the out side & lovely and juicy inside. The service could have been better. Why only 1 waiter to do food & drinks for 20? But overall the experience... More

Staying in Darling Harbour

Neighborhood Profile
Darling Harbour
The original docklands of Darling Harbour have been transformed into a tourist mecca with entertainment for the whole family. Cockle Bay Wharf offers dining options from budget to upscale and million dollar views of the harbour. Young crowds gather on weekends for nightlife that ranges from salsa clubs to DJ's. Families can visit the Chinese Garden of Friendship or the Sydney Aquarium, one of the largest in the world. The Australian National Maritime Museum and the IMAX theatre are also popular attractions. The Harbourside Shopping Centre is a site unto itself, with hundreds of shops, restaurants and bars. On Saturdays in the summer, the city puts on a spectacular fireworks show along the harbour's shore and there are plenty of other free events during the year - Darling Harbour Fiesta, VIVID’s light installations and the Sydney Festival, just to name a few.
