About
Monopole is a European-style wine bar and restaurant in the heart of Potts Point, run by chef Brent Savage and sommelier Nick Hildebrandt, the team behind Bentley Restaurant + Bar, Cirrus and Yellow. One of Monopole’s highlights is Nick Hildebrandt’s wine list, which features more than 500 rare and boutique wines, with around 30 available by the glass or carafe at any time. This list has won multiple awards, including Wine List of the Year in the 2017 Good Food Guide. The Brent Savage-designed menu at Monopole features a range of wine-friendly dishes, house-made charcuterie and a changing selection of local and imported artisan cheeses. The moody and sophisticated interior, rich in dark timber and industrial metals, was designed by acclaimed Melbourne architect Pascale Gomes-McNabb. Monopole is open for dinner seven nights a week, and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. We take limited reservations, reserving half the space for walk-ins.

Situated in the side streets of the CBD, Monopole is a great French restaurant to try. The menu isn’t large, but what is on there is yummy and full of flavour. There was 4 of us so we got to try a number of dishes which included the Duck Liver Parfait, Pork Croquette, Faux-Fillet de Boeuf which was cooked perfectly. The highlights were Vol-au-vent de Poulet et Crustacé, which is quite large, full of flavour and can easily be a main along with Boudin Blanc de Homard which was my favourite dish, the Marron sausage was so light and just delicious. The service was friendly and helpful. The wine list extensive and some really great cocktails to try. There were a number of regulars so you can tell they must be doing something right. We will definitely be back.

The best duck I have ever eaten and the share plate entree of Beef tongue was beautiful. I am aged so I have eaten a lot of duck and I have spent 3 years eating out in Elizabeth Bay and Pott’s Point owing to a long tortuous renovation to my apartment. In other words I am mad about this restaurant and know this area very well. One of life’s special spots. The waiters were kind but also quietly challenging to me about tastes so being alone which I’m not usually was a pleasure instead of an embarrassment. The Cavalo Nero was bearable, such an overrated vegetable, and the waiters coped with the opinions positive and grumpy.

First time dining since the location change and just as impressive as I recall. Im not a fan of sharing menus however I think they seem to pull it off well – It helps with equal amounts to share. The 30% discount via The Fork certainly helped out when it came to the bill.

the main attraction is a phenomenal wine list but the food was very disappointing. Out of 5 or 6 courses, only one is something I would wish to eat again. Generally it was poorly presented. They have not figured out how to serve 'sharing' dishes when there are 3 people. It is very clumsy to expect 3 people to share from 2 bowls. It should be one or three. I got the distinct feeling that the only person who was enjoying all this was the chef.

This is a difficult review to write, because unfortunately there is little consistency (or high variability) across items on the menu, both as to presentation and quality. On the plus side, the main fish dish of blue-eyed cod, zucchini and fennel was perfectly cooked, with excellent presentation, and an interesting and unusual sauce, perhaps just a little on the rich side. Tasty, original and recommended. It deserves a 9 out of 10. At the other extreme, the dessert of peach/almond/peppermint was a puddle of peach mush, with soggy biscuits stuck into it. It looked like bird's vomit, and tasted little better. How any restaurant can serve up such muck is bewildering. It deserves a 0. Other dishes, such as the cavalo nero ($18) for a couple of leaves was grossly overpriced. And the butter arrived with the consistency of warm margarine and far too 'liquidy' and tasted little better. What is ultimately worrying is the lack of supervision and lack of judgment that could give rise to a restaurant serving up such an appalling dessert, while other members of the crew excel at some of the mains. Also disappointing is the lack of any vegetarian mains (notwithstanding that they advertise themselves as vegetarian friendly - there are really no vegetarian main dishes available). I regret that we had the dessert, as the meal would have been far more successful with it, for all concerned.

Most appalling service by our waiter - he was extremely rude and unprofessional. We would have had a better than average experience if not for him, but because of him it was one of the worst dining experiences ever. We followed up on our food as we were left waiting for our mains for quite a long time and were told very condescendingly that we had not waited that long. As it was a celebration, we took some photos with flash to commemorate the occasion and we were told by the same waiter to stop as “this is not a photo studio. If you need to take photos hire a photographer. This is inappropriate”. We saw on Instagram that many people had taken photos here so we were unsure why we were targeted in particular - we speculate perhaps racist. We do not recommend to go here at all as you can find restaurants with better food and MUCH better service in the area. We’re so disappointed as we had heard good reviews.

Food here wasn't bad, however the service was slow, it took over 30 mins for our cocktails and oysters to be served. Better yet, the waiter who served us was rude and condescending. He made statements that were uncalled for twice throughout the night, and quite frankly I'm dissapointed that a staff member would speak to any customer like that, especially for a two-hatted restaurant. Only positive was the duck, but wouldn't return or recommend this restaurant to anyone, after experiencing poor service first hand and knowing that previous diners have also had bad experiences with other waiters/waitresses in this restaurant.

One of the waiters made our night absolute hell. He was condescending and judgemental - after we expressed that we had been waiting for our mains for 50 minutes since ordering he told us curtly that we had not waited 50 minutes for food since the entrees had come out. When we took photos with flash the same waiter told us that we weren't allowed to take any photos at all and that it was inappropriate to do so. There are nicer ways to get the message across and we would've happily obliged but it left a bitter taste for the whole table and we won't be coming back. Would not recommend to any friends or family.

More goodness in Potts Point In the competitive market of Potts Point hides Monopole and I say hides because it is closed off during the day so you could easily miss it walking along McLeay Street. Great bar and restaurant with pleasant staff. The shared entrée of eggplant and chickpea chip was mediocre, the mains were of Wagyu Tartare and blue cod were beautiful. The favourite however was dessert - Buttermilk + Coconut + Brioche + Black Lime. I could taste all these flavours and savoured each mouthful. The cheese platter looked appetising. Nice ambiance, food is on the expensive side with blue cod being $40.00. Thoroughly enjoyed our carafe of wine. There is a tasting menu for $75.00 & I believe Monopole is open till late.

Nice ambience - a pleasant retreat in the busy neighbourhood of Potts Point on Macleay Street. Very nice, friendly service. Delicious food - the meat dishes were so tender. The potato with seaweed butter as a side was very yummy. Very nice desserts. Good wine list. Not cheap.

Wonderful food, excellent, personalised service from our charming waiter (though the older guy with glasses seemed a bit awkward). Dark and moody interior. Drinks are expensive though! Funny how all the East Asians were seated together in the rear of the restaurant lol. Amazing food, certainly a winner.

It’s a modern European dining and wine bar. Love the contemporary cool interiors with an open kitchen separated from the bar section. Chic yet casual place to be.One of the best chicken liver parfait i had tasted. Food is definitely above average to my liking . Great service and never overboard. Bon Appetit!

Our first time at the CBD location of Monopole. Love the menu, all designed to share but could be ordered for a la carte. Service and timing perfect throughout. An extensive and interesting wine list, not for the budget concious. Quality dining experience in attractive surrounds.

We went to Monopole on Valentine's Day, when only a set menu was available (no normal a la carte menu). I was pregnant and in my first trimester so when the reservation was made, we specifically asked whether they could catered for special dietary requirements (i.e. no raw food and no duck) as a lot of restaurants could not do so on Valentine's Day, and Monopole said yes. When we got there, they said they could not swapped the duck, which was the main dish. So I did not end up having any main course. For all the raw food, they simply cooked them. I was surprised, as some ingredients were normally not cooked to the fullest extent for good reasons, e.g. texture and taste. Normally, restaurants which said they could cater for special dietary requirements would swapped the unwanted ingredients with something else. At Monopole, they didn't. So whilst my husband was served a sashimi, I was served the pa-fried then left-to-cool sashimi (tactically specially, it's just cooked fish served cold as this is supposed to be a cold dish), which was tasteless, rough, fishy. I don't understand why they didn't just give me tomatoes or pineapples or apples or whatever instead of the cooked fish which was clearly a disgusting combination. For the salmon, again they overcooked it for me again. I left rather hungry, not a pleasant V-day experience at $150/head for food only. I can imagine the food being so-so if you have absolutely no dietary requirement. For some odd reasons the chef was unable to cater for the slightest variation to its dish and would rather serve a poor-tasting dish which cater for dietary requirements, not sure if this is the chef's way of mocking patrons with dietary requirements or a super dry sense of humor.
