Antique house restored and transformed in three different dining rooms with great taste, full of character with amazing food, good value for money and excellent service from the staff. Highly recommended.
The restaurant is in a peaceful location in the pretty village of Romeu, but it is easy to reach as it is just a few minutes from the motorway. The staff were really friendly, even though we couldn't speak much Portuguese, and service was excellent....We chose the set menu and all the food was great. We drank the house Romeu wine which was very good.
A couple of warnings: it is very popular so you must book in advance, and the portions of the very hearty food are quite large, so make sure you are hungry when you visit!More
Discovered this place through a TV report
My wife's family is from this region and so we decided to go for discovery
This was the best idea for this holiday
The place is really typical for the region and so is the food
Great place...We are used to this region and this restaurant is the best we did yet
We absolutely recommend not only the restaurant but also the very small village
A priceless gem, the food, the atmosphere, the staff OMG. We found it by chance and recommend it to all who want to taste the flavours of this region. Sopa Seca, Bifinhos de Vitela, Feijoca. The house wine is also a good honest wine -...Quinta do Romeu Branco EspecialMore
Advised by multiple people we visited Maria Rita. Located in a romantic town we were surprised by the atmosphere, the food, the local wine and the service. Not the cheapest one, but a great quality for the price you pay. Is you are around, don't...hesitate to visit!More
This restaurant has been going for years. The food is simple but good. I had the bacalhau Romeu which was very good, well cooked but not over done. The white wine we had from the local Quinta was also very good - Quinta do Romeu...Branco Especial. Amazing what you can find in the middle of no where.More
Hard to believe what you can find out in the middle of nowhere, but every trip we always stumble upon some fantastic place that seemingly should be in the big city instead of in the country side. This is such a place. Beautiful building, inside...and out, on a well kept main square in a delightful small town just off the freeway. The restaurant is well appointed with art that gives a flavor of rustic European culture. The menu is small, and without any English. There is a daily menu as well as ala carte. Nobody spoke English but we were able to make it through with a translator app that a waitress provided. We ordered a roast veal dish and a braised veal dish. The menu listed half and full portions. The waitress got it across to us that the half portion was for 1 and the whole portion for 2 people. Both were outstanding, being served with roast potatoes, veggies and a vegetable rice pilaf. The roast was perfectly cooked and delicately seasoned, the braised veal came with a lovely sauce that was great on the rice and potatoes. We also tried the local wines, Quinta do Romeu, both their premium white and red. ( It's easy to get the top of the line as the prices were not too high by Douro standards -- or anywhere else either.) We really enjoyed both. The dessert list was not as creative as some we've seen but it was still tasty stuff. The staff was friendly and helpful, to the extent you can be when you can't speak a word in common. Only issue is that we were the only people in the restaurant, so they didn't have much need to come into the dining room. Consequently we had to go search them out a few times as they weren't in and out to flag down when we needed something (like another bottle of wine). Prices were quite reasonable, in line with other places we've seen (which means inexpensive by USA standards). A delightfully fun stop!More
