Wokingham is an attractive old market town which seems to be thriving in today's economic climate, where not too many of the shops are lying empty and, for a town this size, has more than its fair share of pubs. The Ship Inn is located at the far eastern end of town, facing the parish church. Despite its town location, it does have a bit of a feel of a village pub, with several old fireplaces and wooden beams. It's quite a long, narrow pub, with separate sections and the bar at the far end. The outdoor drinking area (I wouldn't go as far as to call it a garden) is not the most attractive, so we decided to stay inside. There is also a new outbuilding which can be hired for private events. It's a Fuller's pub with their branded ales on offer, plus one or two guests. The menu is fairly straightforward, featuring the likes of Fish & Chips, Burgers, Sausage & Mash and so on - you aren't going to find anything out of the ordinary here. There is also a sandwich menu available, lunchtimes. For what it is, prices aren't all that cheap - I went for a burger, which was a decent burger which I enjoyed but at £16.50 was not cheap, especially considering the minimal accompaniments included. Bacon was charged extra, at £2.50, which I requested, pushing the overall price up to £19 - the portion of bacon was quite miserly and, to be honest, I wondered why I bothered with it. Overall, however, coming here was a positive experience and we all enjoyed our food and drink.

I echo the sentiments of the previous reviewer: the new Sunday roast offering is a marked step up as regards tastiness from what was on offer previously. The portions are of a decent size: note that the majority of vegetables are served in a separate dish which can give the impression that the meal portion is smaller than it actually is. A very friendly pub which is worth a visit imho (full disclosure: I am a regular both during the week and, for the sports coverage, on weekends).

The Ship is one of my favourite pubs in Wokingham, Great atmosphere, great staff team, good banter and excellent ale. I heard they they had changed supplier and were "relaunching" the Sunday roast offering. Wow, what an improvement. Tasty, tasty, very, very tasty.. Backed up with the usual great service.,,

Drinks were fine. We ordered 2 burgers at £16.50 each… when they arrived it was like something from school dinners… no cutlery or condiments were bought over with the meal, it was really disappointing. Wouldn’t have minded if it were more like £7.50 but £16.50!! Expected a lot more.

We visited for lunch on Fathers day. We booked the table in advance because we were expecting it to be busy. However, when we arrived, the first thing we noticed was how quiet the place was. When we ordered our food at the bar, the person serving said the kitchen had a problem with the Yorkshire puddings, which ‘hadn’t turned out right’ and they wanted to warn us before we ordered. We joked with them and agreed to accept a couple of portions of pigs in blankets, so not to complain about the poor Yorkshire’s. The food took ages to arrive and when it did, it was terrible. My friend had the lamb, but it appeared to be more like pork, we are still unsure what it was. The Yorkshire puddings were indeed terrible, they looked like large biscuits and tasted like cardboard. The pigs in blankets were burnt on top and practically anemic underneath, so this didn’t really make up for the poor Yorkshires. I had the chicken, which was average to say the least and the stuffing was horrible. The rest of the food was clearly made from frozen products and it had definitely been in the microwave at some point. It was a very poor effort at a roast dinner. We were expecting something a bit more special and feel that we were misled by the website and the fancy looking menu. Each dish was almost £20, and we certainly expected better. However, it was not completely inedible, so we finished off most of it and then gave polite feed back to the server when they cleared the table. They sadly had nothing to say in response, not even an apology or an offer of a free drink or dessert, nothing to acknowledge our complaint. They promptly disappeared. There was then a staff shift change, so we didn’t see the server again. We had paid up front and were not given the opportunity to discuss the complaint any further. We decided to leave. To top it all off, just before we left, a dog which was wondering around, urinated on my friend’s bag. Overall, a dreadful experience. A real lack of care and very poor customer service. We will not be back.

It's great to be back and the welcome is as warm as ever. The Ship still feels safe and well managed.  Booking is advisable, and although only two hour slots are currently available if you're lucky and there is a gap between bookings for your allocated table staff will tell you and you can stay a little longer if you wish. The car park is currently closed due to the marquee which provides additional seating and because the one way system for the toilets means customers walk through the car park. Always safety first at The Ship .... The quality of beer and food is excellent as ever. The range is currently limited for obvious reasons. Food orders may take a while as everything is made from quality ingredients and is cooked to order, but the wait is worth it. Try the chorizo Scotch egg or dirty buffalomi fries. The pizzas are also excellent. Well done to the whole staff team for clear explanation of the sadly necessary rules, warm welcome and professional/ attentive service in challenging times ...

I held my 30th birthday celebrations at The Ship Inn over the weekend, and I could not recommend the pub any more. Dave (manager) truly went above and beyond from the first time we called to enquire about availability, through to us leaving at the end of the evening. All of the staff were very friendly, and all guests commented on how great the food was. Thank you very much!

I visited with 2 friends. The pub was pleasant, the beer good and the staff friendly. The problem was the food. I ordered Chicken Kiev, which according to the menu comes with mushrooms, spinach and mash. When mine arrived I simply had chicken and mushrooms. I asked the waitress about the mash and spinach and she had to get the kitchen to prepare some. By the time it arrived the chicken was getting cold. Secondly the phrase Chicken Kiev describes a particular dish. I was simply served chicken. There was no garlic butter or anything else. Clearly some work is needed in training the chef to produce the dishes described on the menu!

Had a table of 10 booked in for a company meal with my boss and colleagues in a wednesday evening. What a lovely pub, fantastic selection of beers and ales on draught, great service and superb food. We had a selection of sharing starters (definately recommend the squid and onion rings). I went for the rump steak for main, asked for medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. Overall a great evening and would thoroughly recommend this pub for an evening out in Wokingham.

I was visiting Wokingham to see my son & his partner. He said they had visited this pub once, since recently moving to area & their first impressions had been good. Well, what a great welcome! Even though staff busy setting up for the England/ Spain footie match. We asked if it would be possible to watch men’s tennis final & ‘ Dave’ & staff very obliging, chatty & nothing too much trouble. Friendly bar staff, good prices, so we decided to stay & my son & partner watched tennis whilst sharing a great plate of nachos. Speedy, friendly service. Lots of tables pre booked for footie match & obviously this is a popular pub. Toilets clean, well stocked & lovely handwash/ hand cream. Son & partner very interested in the regular quiz nights & various other regular evening activities. All in all a great visit, & I/we would highly recommend. When I visit again, I will certainly be returning ,& in the interim, I think my son & partner will be active regulars at this ( could be their ‘ local’) pub!

I held my leaving party at The Ship. All the arrangements for timings of food and drink were perfectly organised and I didn’t have to think about a thing. The food was delicious. I just had to enjoy myself along with my guests. It was perfect! Thank you to all involved xx

We called ahead fairly late to check the pub could seat us and the kitchen would be open. Dave the manager was polite and helpful as ever and got us seated as soon as we arrived. We ordered the bacon chop and fish and chips which were cooked freshly and arrived promptly. It was well presented and excellent quality. I can honestly say they were the best minted peas I’ve ever tasted !! The ale was fresh tasting and great as always (tip - the ESB is particularly good!) Thank you Dave and team 👍

Even in these challenging times The Ship provides a warm welcome, quality food/ drink, a cosy and most importantly SAFE environment. Customers and staff safely is put above all other considerations. The addition of a marquee will allow more people to enjoy the hospitality of The Ship undercover, but bagsy a table in the bar near the fire and a pint of ESB! Please note the car park is shut to allow social distancing and the large marquee. CAMRA pub of the year,

I usually drink in this pub as it offers a great selection of ales, good atmosphere and friendly attentive staff. I recently tried the food during Veganuary and loved it! The southern fried vegan burger was spot on and my friend thoroughly enjoyed their fish and chips too. The chips seemed to be homemade and were very tasty. I will definitely be eating here more often. My meal was accompanied by a pint of London Pride which tasted great and was very well kept. Best pub in Wokingham!

So excited to be back at this great pub with their ever friendly hard working staff Dave did well to juggle the tables under cover for the latest Covid restrictions and it felt safe Sadly the menu was pizza and burger....i was gutted. I dont eat meat and only a choice of 2 pizzas for non meat eaters Such a disappointment for my first meal out from cooking every night Will be back for a drink as love the pub and staff but will wait until the menu improves before i eat there again.
