Starting from the assumption that catering in Malta is light years behind our cuisine, and that even for a mediocre dinner you spend €50/60 each, here we tried the tasting menu, which consists of some starters, a second course land and one from the sea, and a sweet for €30. Nothing transcendental, of course, but very fast and impeccable service, humane prices and a decidedly pleasant location have shifted the balance upwards. Ah, we're not wrong: in Italy it would be an insufficient restaurant. But here, in a tourist location, overlooking the bay, at affordable prices, it is objectively difficult to ask for anything better.

We spotted the restaurant earlier in the week and thought it looked lovely. Looking at the menu we really fancied the Maltese Tasting Menu, so we booked online to go a few days later.
The tasting menu was as good as we expected. All the food was great. However, the service was incredibly pushy. We’d barely ordered a cocktail before they were back to ask what food we wanted (why offer cocktails if you are not going to give people time to enjoy them)?
Once we’d ordered the food it came so quickly that the starter plates had not been cleared before the main arrived.
Great food, but they need to relax the service.

I highly recommend stopping and eating at this restaurant because it's worth it. The tasting menu is delicious and also inexpensive so I recommend ordering it.
The owner was also kind and even though we arrived late he was courteous and waited for us.

There are positives, some of which the staff can take credit for, others not. The location is prime, idyllic and picturesque. It would provide a beautiful backdrop to high quality food. Sadly, the food was not of high quality. Whilst not awful, it did not pack any kind of "wow" punch and the price of the food did not reflect its quality.
This said, the biggest let down of this place was the customer service. In many Maltese restaurants, you were welcomed warmly, and every effort was made to make you feel comfortable. This was not the case here. You were left alone for a long time, and in fact we had to eventually to stop a server to ask him to take our order.
This place has the potential to be so good and has so much going for it, but sadly this is not what we experienced on our visit.

We dined here on 09/13/2024.
We had exactly the same dishes as Roby D below. Rabbit and Bragioli.
The restaurant was heaving (19.00) and I think that was the problem, they were trying to produce fast food.
The rabbit and liquid were tasteless and the Bragioli was overdone on the outside and underdone on the inside. As soon as you cut it you needed a spoon to scoop up what fell out!
The vegetables tasted burnt and the potatoes bland.
We told the waiter, who wasn’t Maltese and didn’t seem to understand English very well. All he did was try to sell us a desert.
Apparently, when they are not busy (during the day), the food is good.
Not a good experience and would not go back.

Terrible food. We ordered spaghetti with rabbit but was only spaghetti with tomato sauce. Also one of us ordered rabbit fried with gravy. When begin to eat this rabbit inside meat was cold and sauce bad taste and potato fries with this rabbit was brought about 20 minutes after the rabbit. Horrible Restaurant.

I want to slap the hotel concierge who recommended this absolute tourist trap.
It was packed with people, which is quite hard to believe. All 20-something beach-type tourists that I assume flew in on €10 Ryanair flights.
There was limited interaction with our server as he bellowed “order starters”!
Then “please order mains”! was his next request.
Main courses arrived without anyone having cleared the previous plates, which the kitchen runner asked us to hold because the kitchen was too crowded to take dirty plates.
Actual food wasn’t great. Let’s leave it at that. Great chips, but it ended there.
If it wasn’t so awful, it would’ve been comical. We got out quickly. They took 20% off the bill- but who cares…the evening was a bust.

I wanted to try some dishes of Maltese cuisine and this restaurant seemed nice, given that it is facing the sea, and offered a tasting menu at a reasonable price (the a la carte dishes are not cheap), and from this point of view there is nothing to complain about . However, unfortunately nothing I ate thrilled me. We ate everything because it wasn't that it wasn't good, but there wasn't anything special about it that would make us want to come back (see photo).

The restaurant is in a very good location right on Spinola Bay. You should reserve a table as it is usually full in the evenings.
The food was good, typically Maltese. Unfortunately, the service was rather mixed. There were very friendly waiters but unfortunately also some who were rather aggressive and unfriendly.
The portions are very large. But there are also "starters" for many dishes which you can choose as a main course.
A very fine dessert is Maqrut Bil-Gelat.

Very touristy, cheap cuisine and very expensive bill
We went for Maltese dinner but it wasn't to our liking
The pork sausage must be cooked and they served it a little raw, they told us that it should be cooked like this... impossible...

Very nice place directly on the marina, we ordered a Maltese rabbit and spaghetti with rabbit: both dishes were very good.
As for the pasta, we took the Main version (which consists of a slightly larger dish), while the rabbit is served with potatoes and seasonal vegetables on the side.
The potatoes weren't bad and were seasoned with fennel.
In conclusion we really ate well!
I recommend the place because the cuisine is excellent and, in this part of St Julian's, finding a restaurant that is this good is really rare!
Absolutely approved

The location is fantastic. The cuisine offers various Maltese dishes. Having taken the tasting menu for around 30 euros, we tasted various courses. Quick service and very friendly. All in all a positive opinion, but not exceptional. Price-quality average for Malta.

I had a great dinner today at Gululu Restaurant. The only thing that could have made it better was a table outside by the sea, instead of insight. Not only was the food delicious. But the staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and relaxed. There was no rushing you through the meals, and they knew what the plates were and they could give recommendations. As a starter we shared the traditional bread (on the house) and we ordered the arjoli dip, which looked like a tepanade. Then I had the Fenek Imtektek (pan fried rabbit) and my friend had the spaghetti Fenek. The rabbit dish is a traditional Maltese dish, and words are not enough to describe how delicious it was. The sides are steamed veggies and roasted potatoes. The potatoes were a bit dry, but took nothing away from the star of the dish. For desert we had the Sinizza, I really recommend this awesome desert which is like a dough filled with cream, it looks like a Swiss roll and it tastes divine. We also had the Trifel, also a typical dessert like a pudding with fruits, but we both found it too sweet. And for all this plus wine, water and tea we paid €73. Not bad!

We booked a table for two at 6.30 pm on Saturday 5 November 2022, our first visit to the restaurant.
We were invited to choose a table downstairs or one upstairs overlooking Spinola Bay which was our preference.
We were welcomed by our waiter Mollah, a very polite, friendly and helpful young man who looked after us throughout the evening, ably supported by a couple of friendly waitresses.
We chose the Maltese taster menu for two at €27.50 per head.
Excellent!
Food was first class, service first class, prices first class and nice Maltese or Italian wine by the glass or starting at under €20 a bottle.
Highly recommended if you are staying or visiting St. Julian and would like Matese food from a nice menu in nice surroundings with nice staff!
Thank you Mollah!

We reserved a table indoors, which was situated beside a door to the adjoining Greek restaurant. This door was constantly being opened and left banging whenever an outside door was opened - very annoying! We ordered sea bass (were told that any other fish dish was unavailable, although later diners received it!), pan-fried rabbit, rabbit spaghetti and ricotta ravioli. The sea bass was delicious, the rabbit dishes ok but the ravioli was tasteless and looked unappealing on the plate. The service was poor, nobody asked if we were enjoying our meal and we felt very neglected, one waiter being the exception, exclaiming that we were 'the best' when we helped him by stacking our plates. Very disappointed with the whole experience and would not eat there again.
