i agree the place has lost all character. No atmosphere, no music and while the Canadian waiter is very pleasant the waitress was very offhand and unwelcoming. The food arrived very quickly - precooked? Warm prawn salad -,without any kind of salad !

living in south Galway , the Burren and coastal Clare are just 10 mins from us and we love to go there for a spin either on sunny days or stormy ones as the view is breathtaking. In both cases we always stop at Monks .. for a pint and a chowder.. or a cider and a seafood platter ..... More

We have visited Monks twice this holiday and were hugely disappointed on both occasions. The 'famous seafood chowder' is nothing like it used to be and is mediocre at its best. Now under new ownership/management, it has had a complete facelift but in doing so it has lost the wonderful Irish character that it used to have. The external appearance... More

My group of 15 arrived in Ballyvaughan and was looking for a place for Lunch and came across Monks that is across from the Pier. It is small and cozy inside. The food was incredible. We all enjoyed our meal. That FIsh & Chips were a big hit.

Good food but only a small selection. Really enjoyed the crab on the Guiness bread - recommended. Pity there wasn't more! Not a big place so doesn't have room form many locals and live music or anything like that - but nice quiet, excellent food and drink and a great location. Would love to see a slightly wider choice of... More

We had the chowder and crab claws, well worth the drive. Really good. Only gripe, would like larger slice/portion of lemon!

The cost is a little expensive but it was worth it. Seafood was extremely fresh and they had lots of options for drinks and food.

We popped in during our trip to the Cliffs and were warmly greeted by the staff! The fire in the stove was going and there was a cozy feel to the place. But the best was the fish and chips. We are Americans and I am sure there are many places with great fish and chips but we were thrilled.... More

Not the Monks of old. Small portions, overpriced, poor service. Very disappointing. It would appear as if they are trading on a reputation but up in times past and are not coming near achieving. Such a shame as the location is great.

Carrot soup was amazing. Open face crab sandwiches were delicious. Fish & chips were wonderful. Beautiful views. Highly recommend.
