Well, what a little gem we found in Macdara's! It's been a very long while since we had the pleasure of eating absolutely gorgeous food in the friendliest pub/restaurant in Ireland! The first time we called in, Macdaras had finished serving but Donal (owner?) was...so friendly, warm, and welcoming, that we decided immediately we would come back the next day. And we were not disappointed. The following evening I messaged Donal on WhatsApp to confirm food was being served and immediately received a lovely reply. So we headed over to find ourselves warmly welcomed by all three staff members, Donal included. A short while later we were served the nicest cod & chips ever! The fish was surely still swimming 30 minutes earlier, it was just so fresh and delicious! The batter was light and crisp, and the fish was perfectly cooked. The main was also accompanied by a very tasty slaw, beautiful minted mushy peas, and a divine homemade tartar sauce.  For drinks I chose a buttery chardonnay which was just perfection with the meaty white flakes of wild caught cod, and my husband had a pint of the locally brewed Bridewell Blonde. This is a firm favourite whenever we visit Clifden but sadly not available in bottled form just yet.  As good as the food was, the surroundings and ambiance were equally enjoyable. The music drifting from the mounted speakers was perfectly chosen, with sounds from the best of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and some very tasteful 90s tunes making the odd appearance. Of course, having a bit of banter and chat with Donal added that extra special personal touch, rounding off a really lovely evening out. If you are coming to Clifden then please pay a visit to Macdara's. Clifden is full of busy (and often loud) bar/restaurants and we have tried them all over the years. Macdara's is a recent addition to the town, but a really special one. We come about four times a year and Macdara's is definitely our new favourite place to relax, eat, drink, and chat.More

After a long day cycling and exploring Connemara we were looking forward to a nice meal. After being told our order had gotten lost we finally received it. I ordered the rigatoni pasta but I was handed a tagliatelle that was rock hard around the...edges (presumably from being reheated in a microwave) and it had no pesto underneath and was just slimy and wet. I have a big appetite but had about two bites and couldn't eat anymore. Very disappointing, wouldn't return!More

Cannot praise Macdaras enough, we had a lovely dinner accompanied by trad. Had the chicken burger, cooked to perfection and my kids ate every morsel. Reasonably priced too, a great evening's entertainment.

Ate in here with our 3 kids (5, 10 and 11) yesterday evening. Food was freshly-made and plentiful. Kids' meals were great quality. (Thumbs up from them too!) I'd a lovely Cajun spiced chicken burger - made with a fresh chicken breast. My wife said...the chowder was the best ever. It came with satisfying home-made wheaten bread. We also had a smoked salmon salad which was also top-notch. All this to rousing live traditional music in the background. (On every evening at 6.30 - the sign outside says). Although we didn't sit outside, the view down towards the harbour is picture-postcard. An all round great experience.More

There are a few negatives, let's get them out of the way, the place is tired and a little worn out. But the guys working the bar and serving food were full of charm. The food when it arrived defied the surroundings, it was a...delight.More

Although short staffed and the guys were under obvious pressure & the service could have been quicker, the food was exceptional and well worth the wait. We ordered the fish of the day and chips and everything down to the tarter sauce was amazing. The...guys were also incredibly friendly and accommodating. Also, an amazing view out the back. Will definitely revisit!More

We drove up to Clifden via the Wild Atlantic Way and came across this cute town nestled between hils and the sea. After looking at TripAdvisor for restaurant recommendations, we decided on Macdara's and we were not dissaponted. The quaint style and great live music...were amazing. The good was some of the best in Ireland that we had and the seafood chowder was the best my husband and I have ever had. For non seafood lovers (our daugther) there was a chicken pasta which was wonderful. You not only need to go to Clifde, you need to eat at Macdara's. There is a a beautiful patio out the back that overlooks the sea but we got there late and ate inside so we could listen to the music.More
