"Pod Psem", in Polish, means something inferior, but it is not a case with Oberza, quite to the contrary. To find it you must be watchful. At the road no 609, between Ukta and Mikołajki, is just a small sign "Kadzidłowo" which you easily may...overlook. Then ca 3 km of unpaved country road. Finally, a few old buildings on a broad meadow, the froremost being that of the Oberza. To be admitted without a reservation is not easy, as we checked ourselves on a sunny Saturday. But once coming in you are in a fairyland. A small inn scrupulously furnished to resemble a XIXc. establishment and serving exquisitive dishes more elaborated and tasty than you may have in top city restaurants.
We had a very simple lunch. I had chłodnik and pierogi and my wife chanterelle soup and Silesian noodles. It sound simple, almost primitive, but you have to taste it to conclude that true perfection is in the simpicity.
And after the lunch came a great bonus. Attached to Oberza is an old country house restored from a ruin furnished and equipped to a folkroristic museum. Having been led over it by a guide, who participated in the actual restoration, we were absolutely amazed by amount of work spent on a ruin and the taste in which it has been performed. Small wonder that it has got the Michelin star.
All that being arranged by a couple of city expatriates We are very grateful to them for such a feat.
Altogether it is a place worthy a detour on your travel.More
