I am black, my friend is Asian, we went in this pub this afternoon to have a quiet drink with our white friend and watch the football. Within two minutes of us sitting down, the barman came over and said if we weren’t buying drinks...we had to leave, I said it’s fine we were just coming over to order. I then went to the bar, and the guy said “on second thoughts I think it’s best you leave, it’s going to get busy in here soon” he refused to serve me or give me any other reason. When we went home, we mentioned this to some friends from the Ashford area, and they said this pub is notoriously racist and the landlord probably did us a favour telling us to leave “before it got busy”.More
It’s a proper pub. Don’t come here for posh nosh. It’s all about well kept and good quality Fullers beers and a pleasant atmosphere. The pub is clean, tidy, freshly decorated and welcoming.
The service is great and it’s an excellent pub if you wish...to watch the sport. Having said that, the TV volume is not cranked up - so you can still enjoy a conversation.
I’m fortunate to have this pub at the end of my road.More

I was waiting for the 216 bus and decided to go in the pub for an ESB. Ended up having four pints and missed two buses. Great service and made to feel welcome. Beer is excellent, bit biased as fullers are one of my favourite...brewers. Would definitely return.More

That's excellent to hear! Glad you had a great experience with us and hope you will pop back in for 1 or 4 pints again soon!
I have used the Ash Tree for at least ten years. Always a good pub for watching sport. Several screens, and so you would get rugby on couple screens and horse racing on a Saturday on others. Or football and rugby, really whatever the customer...asked to watch.
Last night I visited for the first time since new management has taken over. The big screen and side screens were showing ITV2, You've Been Framed. I had previously telephoned the Ash tree to ask if they would show the Czech/German football game and was told when I arrived to ask the bar staff to put it on. This I did and one small screen was tuned in to the appropriate Sky channel. However the sound was not turned on and the ITV channel continued to blare out at an exceptionally loud volume so it was not possible to hear any football comentary.
There were the barman's family and several children (under about 10 years old) watching the big screen, also children running up and down the pub like a playground. Then the Xfactor came on, and continued to the end of the programme.
The Ash tree was almost empty except for all the children. What a difference to the friendly sporting atmosphere it used to be. There is no way I will return to this pub, as it seems most of the other locals are not there now who I would normally see there.More
