Awesome restaurant loved that fact that there is not much choice its a set menu and shared out of huge pots but just beautiful, I loved the story behind the electricity and how the power goes out and a coin has to be put in the meter to get the power back on and it involves all the customers awesome... Whatever you do, don't peel the salami! Our party included a chef who was severely reprimanded for doing so. Don't visit during peak season and don't expect anyone to smile at you. No-one speaks English and our attempt to communicate in German was met with stone-faced replies in Italian. Food was distributed not served and honestly, we felt like animals... More

Simple but very, very good food. You will be eventually seated at long tables with other people. Service is super friendly and efficient. The food is delicious. You eat what is served.First a wooden platter where you cut off as much sausage as you like and pass it on. But keep in mind that there is more to come!We had salad... More

Grotto Baldoria was recommended by a local shop keeper. What a fun, rustic place to dine. Beside excellent food, you easily interact with other guests and share laughs and experiences. We met a couple who had visited this unique restaurant over 50 times. Spontaneously we booked a room from Mauro and enjoyed the Ascona Jazz scene that evening. Yes, the... More

Where to begin...The grotto baldoria is a small restaurant in the heart of the borgo of Ascona. I'd basically describe this place as a chaotic, funny and all over "chill" restaurant. You don't get to choose what you eat as there is no menu, just the same old dishes (salame and bread, salad, tongue, pasta all'arrabiata, polenta and a sort... More

in touristy and expensive Ascona... After strolling their weekly market and under the heating sun, we just wanted to sit and lunch anywhere indoors and possibly with running a/c; lakeside restaurants were full so better look inner alleys and we found this “grotto”; it was full but still we asked if a table was available and we were seated... perfect.... We had no idea what to expect here, but it was brilliant! You get what arrives, sausage, salad, pasta, meat dish, then coffee, optional digestivo and tart! We spent 75 CHF between two including drinks and were stuffed (I think probably rare in Ascona). Great value and quality ingredients, where simplicity is the key to the dishes. I would definitely... Amazing experience. No preset menu, this is a family-style operation that churns out no frills, high quality fare . Stunning food, authentic environment, a joy. At the end of the meal, if you take their advice and order the "fire water", they bring out the bottles to your table and you serve yourself. Do it.

This is a 'one off' restaurant. The place is often totally packed out, crammed into a small place all ready for a set menu of seven course, no choice, take it or leave it, slice off as much salami or cheese as you want and then pass the platter onto the next table. Don't leave anything as it is the... More

This grotto does not offer a classic menu, you get what they cook in the kitchen, which was very delicious. I had food there which i have never had before. Everyhing is very good exept the staff which was not able to serve that many people in a appropriate time. Sometimes we tried to get the attention for more than... More
