Grotto Baldoria DECIDES for you: where you sit, what you eat, and with whom... They fill their tables with maximal efficiency, have exactly the same and only 'menu fixe' for all, and enforced mingling amongst strangers. WHAT you get to eat is tasty: salami, salad, pasta, cheese, dessert, and you DECIDE how much. It is not very expensive, either. HOW... More

We had no idea what the place was all about but it was packed so we figured we'd give it a try. It was so different from any place we've ever been to. After the cook came out of the kitchen to seat us, we knew we were in for a treat. We then ordered red wine, which was very... More

Stumbled by this place one evening whilst strolling around Ascona. It was full and looked buzzing so decided we would try and dine here before we left. Next evening, we got there for 7.15pm and it was already quite full. You are told where to sit - no choice. We joined a table of 4 diners who were already part... More

Baldoria is a very rare find these days...I lived in Ascona 20 years ago, I returned recently for my wedding anniversary with family and the Grotto was exactly as I remembered it all that time ago! The menu was the same excellent quality , un adulterated and simple fresh cuisine where the ingredients speak for themselves. It was wonderful to see... More

We found this gem based on the recommendation of our ferryboat crewman. Not having read any reviews beforehand, we were not sure how things worked. For example, when a tray of whole salamis was brought out with a knife for us to take what we wished, we tried to ask how much it cost. The waiter spoke no English or... More

Awesome restaurant loved that fact that there is not much choice its a set menu and shared out of huge pots but just beautiful, I loved the story behind the electricity and how the power goes out and a coin has to be put in the meter to get the power back on and it involves all the customers awesome... Whatever you do, don't peel the salami! Our party included a chef who was severely reprimanded for doing so. Don't visit during peak season and don't expect anyone to smile at you. No-one speaks English and our attempt to communicate in German was met with stone-faced replies in Italian. Food was distributed not served and honestly, we felt like animals... More

Simple but very, very good food. You will be eventually seated at long tables with other people. Service is super friendly and efficient. The food is delicious. You eat what is served.First a wooden platter where you cut off as much sausage as you like and pass it on. But keep in mind that there is more to come!We had salad... More

Grotto Baldoria was recommended by a local shop keeper. What a fun, rustic place to dine. Beside excellent food, you easily interact with other guests and share laughs and experiences. We met a couple who had visited this unique restaurant over 50 times. Spontaneously we booked a room from Mauro and enjoyed the Ascona Jazz scene that evening. Yes, the... More
