The most idyllic location for a special occasion, the blue decor and sea features really capture the settings around you. The staff couldn’t do enough for me, I’ve never received so many ‘presents from the chef’ in their words, magical little side dish treats to compliment the superb food and wine. For anyone passing through Positano, I would make Chez Black the top of your list

Right on the beach front, the venue itself is really well presented with a lovely view. Considering it was October and corona times, it was busy enough for it to have a good vibe without it being too packed either. The staff were very attentive and friendly. As soon as we ordered some drinks we received a free plate of bruschetta which was delicious. My partner ordered a pizza and I had the meatballs and pasta. Both were really delicious and we finished the whole thing. The tiramisu was also very delicious. They have quite an extensive menu so something for everyone. It's not necessarily the cheapest but no restaurant in Positano is and for the price, I thought the quantity and quality was worth it. Would definitely return here.

This place is a must for those looking for a fun, lively atmosphere and great hospitality with beachfront views. We enjoyed this place so much, we ate there twice. The octopus carpaccio is one of the most delectable things I’ve ever eaten. It’s so fresh and sliced almost razor thin. I ordered it both times. We went once for a late lunch and also for dinner. Each time the service, food and ambiance was great! There was a live band that came through the restaurant singing at dinner which was so fun and a lovely touch. And to top it off, Gian who I believe is the owners son, was so kind and hospitable. He made you feel as if he’s known you for years, checking in on your table personally, suggesting places for cocktails afterward and overall, just ensuring you felt taken care of. We went during peak season so I’m sure Gian isn’t there every time but it just shows how much the family truly cares about your experience. Highly suggest you putting in a reservation a couple days ahead. But regardless, they will do their best to get you seated. It just may not be prime seating.

Wow what a disappointment - quite surprised to see 5 star reviews on here. We were hesitant to come as it is situated on the beachfront but it looked like it had a nice vibe. This restaurant is extremely overrated and overpriced - food was SO bland and dry I honestly couldn’t believe it was the price is was too. Wine was also warm. The food didn’t taste fresh and overall it didn’t reflect the quality of meals we’ve had elsewhere in the Positano. Honestly, if you want a genuinely delicious meal with personal service, go further up the hill.

Strolling along the front in Positano we checked out a number of menus but were drawn to the perhaps polished look of the restaurant compared to others and to be fair the interior and atmosphere was second to non. You could imagine how this places looked in the 1950s and greeted by a number of older Italian chaps who looked like the owners defiantly gave this place a feel of authenticity. We sat down and clearly this seemed the place to be, the restaurant filled up quickly with many people then being made to wait or turned away. The food, well I often wonder whether because I live in london I am blessed with such a good quality number of establishments so when paying a fairly pricy bill of €165 for 2 people I expect top notch quality. Unfortunately this was not the case. The younger chap who came to serve us offered no help through the fish counter even when probed. We settled on sharing the fried squid to start, and after being told we would have to wait a short period whilst the whole chief team went for their dinner then arrived, chewy and rubbery batter. Didn’t really feel fresh and wondered whether we got the apprentice cooking whilst they ate. Not to worry we were still looking forward to the main course. I had ordered locally caught prawns and my partner the fish of the day, fillet of sea bass with sides of grilled veg, French fries and salad to share. So here’s it straight, the fries were over cooked, and lukewarm when they arrived, the grilled veg was seasoned to within an inch of its thinly sliced life, the salad fresh and with some great flavoured tomatoes, the fillet of sea bass decent with great flavour, the prawns well for €45 for 5 prawns that looked liked they had come straight out of the freezer bag from Iceland, I was very disappointed. We had a nice bottle of wine but declined to have dessert. Me and my partner debated long was it the price of our meal that put us off or was it the quality. In truth a bit of both, for the cost of the meal for 2 in the lovely setting I would certainly expect the quality to be vastly better. If it was half the cost maybe we would feel it was so poor? Best advice, follow the other trip adviser reviews that rate some of the other restaurants along the front rather than judge a book by its cover!

Chez Black is a good restaurant that has a great location and it's apparently always open. We were in Positano in late November and a lot of places were closed, but Chez Black was always open. The food was very good, but not on par with the best I had in Amalfi area. The Margherita Pizza was great.

We ate here on our first night when we hadn’t yet booked. They were v busy but managed to squeeze us in as a walk in. All Covid procedures seamless with front of house team in control of everything. We were a little nervous that it would be over priced and poor food given the beach side location but pizzas were nice and service was quick and friendly

We felt like we had to try this place because it was on so many blogs and came recommended. We enjoyed going to smaller cozier restaurants versus this one- service was nonexistent and the food was not good. Was surprised how tasteless vongole could be. Would not recommend this place.

Tourist class restaurant on the beach. Lovely views, great location. They serve sea food, pasta, pizzas etc. I tried one of the house specialities, the black ink linguine with sea food. A large portion. It tasted rather salty, but maybe that’s how it is suppose to taste. My son found the Parma pizza, which came without tomato sauce, quite dull. We only ate half our meals. We paid €46 incl a bottle of water. The waiters were a little disengaged, only wearing their face masks (against covid) over their mouths, but not their noses. Woudnt revisit. Still, great location - so I give it three (rather than two) dots.

You would think a restaurant with prime location by the beach and unbelievable views would have some decent service and food. But no - and the prices were quite painful. I was able to find restaurants that had margarita pizza for 6 euros, but it was almost double that in this restaurant. Like other reviews, the service was what put me off. For those going/returning from a boat tour, I would encourage you to eat before arriving or hold off until arriving to your final destination. I would actually recommend eating further from the beach. I enjoyed the restaurants higher up in Positano which had better food and views.

Visited on a Wednesday night at the end of September. It was very quiet and the service was great. I felt it was a little pricey for what you get, the pizzas and basic pasta dishes are probably good value for money but I ordered the prawns for main at €35 and only received 4 smallish prawns. I can imagine it’s good during the day as the location is nice and you probably pay a premium for that. Don’t go in the evening when it’s wasted!

Commanding a prime location on the beach promenade area, it seems friendliness, service and hospitality aren’t considered necessary. Always busy, we had never missed coming to this restaurant every time we visited Positano, which has been often over the past 10+ years. The owner was always present and mingling with guests as he watched over the running of the restaurant. On this occasion, almost 3 months in advance, we again booked for dinner. The reception when we arrived could not have been more different from previous visits. We were shown to a table at the back of the restaurant alongside the kitchen area, unacceptable when we had booked so far in advance. The manager was curt and told us we could either take the table or leave as he could not offer anything else, claiming he was also running bookings for 2 hotels who he had to keep tables for and that ‘everyone books in advance and he didn't know us” So disappointed, we left without eating and went elsewhere. We will never patronise this restaurant again, it is so disappointing to see a famous, family run business descend to a soulless, money grubbing commercial enterprise that cares so little about customers who have been consistently loyal over many years. But don’t rely simply on my review here, read some of the others which are similar.

Decided to eat here as it looked nice passing by and had decent reviews however was very disappointed by the food. The seafood pasta took a while to make and was overcooked. It tasted more like noodles than pasta. There was a lot of clams and mussels in the dish but no other seafood. My husband's pizza was OK but nothing special. Overall I think this place is overrated and possibly a nice place for a drink but perhaps not for a meal.

If your looking for the quintessential restaurant that has past its prime, look no further. It’s with great disappointment that I write this review. Sure, you will be enamored with the history of Chez Black, celebrity pictures on the wall, nostalgia of an old era, but it’s no longer the restaurant it once was. From the moment you present, to the sprint you make to leave the restaurant, you will be left disappointed. The two male hosts (one who is in several of the pictures hanging above your table) view patrons like meat hanging in a butcher shop. It’s rare to see such a display of over the top machismo. There is a pecking order to which table you will be given, flirtatious, voluptuous women seated to the front of the restaurant, and those average appearing to the back. It’s comical that these two do not recognize that those with new money have little care about clothing labels and appearance, and seek an experience above all. Waiters do little to greet you and want to hurriedly get your order. Most fine establishments will help guide your through a menu, wine list or even local specialties. Not at Chez Black, they made it obvious that you should feel fortunate to be in their presence. After an hour of placing our order, we were served a meal that is on par with any number of restaurants found in the region, but only to be left with a bill that doubles their counterparts. The disappointment was overwhelming. Unfortunately, it seemed to be a common experience seen with other patrons. Be warned, this is not the place that some grand reviews suggest. You will likely have better luck at a small family trattoria where the emphasis is on quality food served with pride and friendship, and you certainly won’t need lip filler and breast augmentation to flag a waiter down. Dear Chez Black, We hope you can take an honest assessment of what many online reviewers are experiencing at your restaurant. In a world full of over-hyped, under delivering establishments you have become common place. Consider becoming great again.

This restaurant was recommended by friends who had visited Positano previously. It is located by the sea with pretty views but it is touristy, crowded, and mediocre. The host, Bernardo, would not give us a definite reservation but recommended we come back for the 7 or 9pm Sunday seating which he was positive he could deliver but no such luck. Our hotel was able to secure us a reservation mid week but even that was frought with confusion. Somehow, our waiter was able to give us a free pizza, high five for that! The seafood pasta and risotto were good. Our waiter warned us against their sea urchin specialty which he described as ‘too fishy’. There are just other great restaurant options to choose from and we actually preferred the Tre Sorelli restaurant next door to Chez Black.
