Typical Omani restaurant accessed from a side street from the facade. The restaurant can be reached by climbing the stairs, where a very welcoming and warm environment opens up. Absolutely kind staff: you can book online and in the requests I had written to please not be placed on the floor because there is the possibility of eating on the traditional carpet or on low tables but sitting on cushions...my husband has knee problems and he can't sit in that position, so when we realized that we had been assigned the low table it was a drama! Well...even though the place was very full, they managed to reseat us on a standard table in just a few minutes to make our stay comfortable. Truly wonderful, especially the maître d', I wonder how he manages the amount of customers. But let's move on to the food: we tasted potato croquettes with a spicy sauce, a coconut and mango cream with prawns served with rice or bread and the grilled shellfish where there was half a lobster: all delicious!! A glass of wine would have been nice but unfortunately alcohol is not served. We have an 8 year old girl who they did everything to please with an off menu simple grilled fish and chips. The 4 of us spent 70 OMR, not a little compared to more touristy and much less traditional places, but their courtesy and professionalism alone is worth it all. If ever in my life I return to Muscat I would definitely stay here again.

We had lunch here. We arrived early afternoon without a reservation and waited around 5 minutes to be seated. The restaurant was busy but not completely full. Staff were all friendly and had good knowledge of the menu which specialises in Omani cuisine - assisting us with our queries. I had the lamb shuma with rice and my partner had the prawns cooked in a coconut curry with Omani bread. Food was fantastic and portions were very generous. In addition we ordered a side of fries and also received a cucumber salad in error, but we had way to much food. We also had the Bait al Luban for desert. The outlook is over the corniche so the view was also fantastic. You get the impression you are dining in an authentic Omani restaurant. Although we had a good table and were seated inside, I would highly recommend making an advance reservation and requesting a balcony table.

...I spent it in this beautiful restaurant in the heart of Mutrah. The menu is varied and the choice is really difficult; superb the dish of rice and meat cooked together to such an extent that they become creamy like a porridge and accompanied by a delicious date cream. I had not yet found such a taste in any of the Middle Eastern cuisines tried in the world (and I frequent Lebanese restaurants very often!). The soft lighting environment is relaxing and the friendly staff, albeit a little more detached and colder than usual in the country; prices above average

I was really looking forward to dining at Bait Al Luban, eager to experience the renowned Omani cuisine and hospitality. However, my experience was far from welcoming. Upon arrival, I was denied a table simply because I was dining alone, while larger groups and couples were seated without issue. It became clear that the restaurant prioritizes revenue over hospitality, choosing to accommodate only larger parties rather than a solo diner. This practice is disappointing and short-sighted—restaurants should focus on providing a great experience for all customers, not just those who bring in the highest bill. Not only is this exclusionary, but it also goes against the rising global trend of solo dining, where individuals should feel just as welcome as groups. Turning away paying customers, especially when tables are available, is a poor business decision and leaves a bad impression. A true dining establishment should pride itself on inclusivity, not just on maximizing profits. If you’re traveling alone or enjoy solo dining, be warned—this restaurant may not welcome you. I hope the management reconsiders this policy and recognizes that every customer, regardless of party size, deserves good service.

Poor quality dishes! However, the choices were simple and traditional (meat in famous dishes). The meat was really not well prepared to say the least, and it is very likely that it had been prepared the day before and therefore reheated because it was tough for the nature of the dishes chosen. The so-called fresh juices were nothing fresh: they were from low-end nectar juice sources (orange or grenadine). In short, a restaurant that specializes in giving tourists an idea of traditional Omani cuisine but nothing more... and if you know this cuisine at all, you can't set foot there again... Too bad because it is very popular with tourists and foreigners! Finally the prices are very expensive for the (absent) quality of the dishes served.

Bait Al Luban is a gem in Muscat that beautifully showcases the essence of Omani hospitality and cuisine. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this was more than just a meal—it was an experience. What We Loved: Authentic Omani Flavors: The menu offers a wide variety of traditional dishes. The Shuwa (slow-cooked meat) and Harees were standout highlights, bursting with flavor. Warm Hospitality: The staff was welcoming, knowledgeable about the dishes, and eager to make our visit memorable. Ambiance: The restaurant’s décor reflects Omani heritage, creating an inviting and cultural atmosphere. The sea-facing view added an extra layer of charm to our experience. Presentation: Every dish was beautifully plated, showcasing the pride they take in their cuisine.

It’s easy to see why this restaurant is so popular with locals and tourists alike - both the service and food are excellent, and the authentic decor created a beautiful atmosphere. There is traditional floor seating on offer or tables and chairs if you would prefer. Next time, I think I’ll go for the balcony - the views of the busy street and corniche looked great. We had traditional Omani dishes and they were delicious and beautifully presented. As is tradition, at the end of the meal we were offered coffee and dates. Loved the touch of receiving rose water for our hands when we were leaving.

This restaurant was recommended for a fish supper - it’s just across from fantastic fish market. Restaurant is decorated in omani style & has nice ambiance - touches of omani hospitality included welcome drink of frankincense water; complimentary dates & coffee and rose water sprayed on hands at departure. HOWEVER the food was totally underwhelming. Traditional fish salad starter was OK; lentil soup was good (hard to mess up!) but seafood platter was not at all good. Fish & seafood was quite tasteless- seemed to have been cooked with no seasoning; oil or garlic. Dry and overcooked, served with vegetable gratin which was also unappealing & tasteless. Our side of french fries were oven cooked frozen chips! We caught a taxi home and driver sd that their fish is frozen - no idea if that’s right but I would not be surprised. Very disappointing after seeing so much great fish at the market

When staying in Muttrah I never went anywhere else for dinner than at the 'Bait al Luban' (the House of Frankincense), a place I enjoyed very much. First one goes up some stairs, then there is a welcome by a Filipina looking young lady (not always the same), who places one at a table and who also takes the reservations. The waiters were young men, probably from the Indian subcontinent. Generally all the staff were very friendly and professional. The interior decoration is traditional Omani style. There is a menu card in English and Arabic with an interesting choice of mainly Omani dishes. As appetizers I twice had the 'Gheleambe', a speciality from the Sharqiya region: Watercress salad with shallots and cherry tomatoes in a dried lemon dressing. Fantastic. Another time I went for 'Sahnat Qashe', thus sundried Anchovies with cherry tomatoes and spring onions, put into a form. The very small fish were tasty, but rather tough. The main courses were always accompanied with rice, either as 'Makbus' (cooked in a vegetable broth) or as 'Qabouli' (in a meat broth). Once I had 'Hammour' (Rockcod), then 'Qabouli Laham' (meat broth rice with pieces of lamb in it) and 'Shuma', the Omani celebration dish with the meat having been cooked for six hours in an underground firepit. Tasty again, but the lamb a bit stringy. At the end they offered a glass of Frankincense water and local dates. Together with a fresh Mint tea I also ordered once a 'Khabeesa' as dessert, a Date and Cardamom Roux in Saffron and Rose water, served with Vanilla Ice Cream. The next time it was a 'Luqaimat', dumplings soaked in Cardamom, Saffron and Rose Syrup, something I knew as 'Lokma' in Turkey or 'Loukoumades' in Greece.

The place to discover and enjoy Omani gastronomy. Located overlooking the Matrah fish market, the Bait al Luban restaurant, on the second floor of a building overlooking the bay, offers a pretty, tastefully decorated traditional setting, with large rooms and small lounges, normal tables and coffee tables with sofas. The strong point is a typically Omani menu that you must explore with curiosity to discover particular local flavors: dried anchovies with tomatoes and garlic, slices of roasted eggplant served in a yogurt and garlic sauce, the shuwa which is meat marinated and simmered for six hours, garlic and lemon sauce, and manshab, tuna in coconut milk, garlic and lemon. With fresh pomegranate juice, it's a great experience that justifies a higher price than elsewhere but remains reasonable.

Located in Mutrah harbour in beautiful Muscat we were in for some local stuff. The restaurant is located on the second floor in an old building facing the Indian Ocean. Efficient waiters served us quickly and we ordered trditional Shuwa (long cooked lamb with rice) and some Zanzibarian spinach in coconutsauce. The meat was dry and a bit tough. Not much flavour. A rustic disappointment. The spinach was good, not great. We’ll still to Indian food in Oman, I think.

Thrilled by the great reviews of this Omani restaurant from the Afort Marriot hotel in Muscat the corgier booked a table for four for 7.30am on Sunday 27 October. Once on site we discovered that the room, beautiful and quaint as described, was full and we were told that the corgier of the 'hotel was informed that the reservation had been made to their new premises 10 minutes drive. Reassured that the place was equivalent and not being able to undertake more research we went there. The disappointment was great when we were welcomed, the only customers, in a place that had nothing in common with the historic one of which so much praise the 'atmosphere and cuisine. We ate well but we would never have chosen it for a typical evening: along with refined serving dishes, plastic bottles at the table and desserts in a plastic cup. Not to mention the toilet in the hallway of the adjacent building. We felt fooled by the manager's assurances.

This restaurant was recommended to us, however even though the decor and service of the waiters were good the food was poor and very expensive for what you get. We ordered Mini Mishkak and you get 4 small skewers (prawn, squid, chicken and beef) all of them of poor quality. At nearly OMR 5 this was a total rip off. Typical tourist trap. There are much better options available in Muscat. Avoid!

We selected by your reputation. Although we arrived half an hour earlier, we were warmly welcomed. Given oliven water to start. The requests were made verbally and repeatedly (good memory because we were 7 people and everything came fine and knew what each person asked). The entries can be shared, the main dishes arrived promptly and were well presented. The sweets include wonderful ice cream and are generous. The Oman coffee is served with tamaras, if they are couples, they can eat outdoors on a narrow balcony, where you sit and, pillows and at the table.

Unfortunately, 100% disappointing. I ordered lobster for appr. 35 Euros, several times underscored that the lobster should be grilled, nothing else. What I got was an incredibly bad tasting dish, where some lobster pieces where covered im a horrible flour sauce….never again!!‘
