Not been to the Chequers for many years, I could see from the outside that it had changed a lot but upon entering the building was shocked and horrified to see dead animals hung on the walls not just small dead animals massive dead animals...in every direction you looked I found that hugely upsetting and disturbing, so did my young son. Food was nice, but a full drink was spilt on my son and cousin, glasses were dropped and more liquids were split without much of an apology. At the end we were offered coffee which we assumed came with the mince pies by the way the question was worded however we found out later that you had to pay for them, something I definitely wouldn’t have done as they were horrendous tasting coffees!!! All in all was very disappointed with what was a pretty expensive evening that was not even worth the money.More

A disappointing experience given the high price of the food and drinks. The steak priced at £35 was not cooked as requested and this was not followed up by the waitress when it was brought to her attention. No chips/potatoes were included and £6 extra...for a small bowl of chips seems excessive, when most restaurants include the same, as did £5.20 for a large glass of lime and soda. Sadly we will not be returning.More

The food was good, however, they we had to send one of the mains Sunday roast beef dinners back as there was no meat but only fat. In the end we have complained about the bill due to the restaurant not acknowledging the fact that...we had to wait for a main replacement while everyone else had their mains placed. In the end, the owner came to talk to us, holding a pint of beer and telling us to get out. This was extremely disappointing and disrespectful.More

met my friend for lunch here, only to find there is no lunch time menu as we both work and cook for the family in the evening did not want a full meal, so had a chicken burger, and shared a portion of chips, the...burger was very bland, no relish, no seasoning on the chicken, the chips were very dry, asked for vinegar that came in a bowl, did not bother with that as did not want it soaked, 2 drinks, lime and soda, and an orange juice and lemonade, that came out as an orange squash and lemonade 2 coffees nothing special £4.50 each, over £50 for lunch for 2 and not even that nice, i will not be returning, did not see the gratuity added until i had left the pub would defiantly of taken that off, very disappointing, would not recommend and certainly won't be back. they should state when booking for a lunch time they don't offer a lunch time menuMore

Booking a table was very easy to do online, I even had a reminder for the booking and to confirm that we would still be attending. Arrived on time and was seated straight away. Very friendly staff and prompt service. We had all ordered a...Sunday roast which was fantastic probably the best we have had and all at reasonable prices. I would definitely return again and would highly recommend. Fantastic all round.More

So my son & his girlfriend booked a table for a Sunday roast today. I was so looking forward to it as have heard it advertised for a few years. So we arrived on time for our booking to then be asked to wait outside...along with two other parties. Just glad it wasn’t cold and inclement. Not a great start as first impressions stand for a lot. We finally got seated 15 minutes later than our original booking. Things could only get better. We ordered some soft drinks while making our choices, we also asked for some water for the table. Our food arrived and we again asked for some water! There was an empty chair next to me with plenty of room behind me yet the waitress lent straight across me with a plate of food to a place diagonally opposite. During our meal at no time did anyone come across to see if everything was okay.? Once we’d finished the waiter arrived to collect our plates and again we asked again about water for the table!!!! The waiter asked if we’d like desserts, so we thought we’d chance our arm. When my son received a wet and dirty menu we decided against desserts and asked for the bill. We got fed up with waiting and decided to get up to leave and pay on the way out, The bill appeared as we were putting our coats on. My son asked if the 12% gratuity could not be added to the bill which the waiters response was that it wasn’t going to be so was obviously aware that we were not happy. We then drove to Tesco’s to pick up some desserts. While travelling home my son who has worked in the hospitality sector stated that at no time were we asked about food allergies, good job none of us suffer with any! A word of advice if having a roast, you’ll need to order side,s as 2 roast potatoes and 1 carrot with the seasonal vegetables not enough for a reasonable size Sunday roast. Certainly didn’t put any fun back on my plate and certainly will not be returningMore

Six of us just before 7.30 on a Tuesday evening, without prior reservation. It didn't seem very busy so they could fit us in. Due to present circumstances we have been eating out rather a lot recently and this stands out as one of the...best meals we have had. In fact we ate at a different pub the next night and it really wasn't as good. Wide-ranging, modern, British gastropub menu. Chef/ owner Steven Sanderson certainly knows his stuff. Lovely starters. As for mains, the lamb rump and pork belly met with particular approval. I certainly enjoyed the sausages and mash. Only the lady who chose cottage pie was a bit disappointed. A side dish of tenderstem broccoli, peas and greens was absolutely delicious; I will try that at home. Good-sized portions. I was the only one who could manage dessert; sticky toffee pudding, excellent. I was pleased to see the menu marked up with numerous gluten-free possibilities. There are a few vegan options too. Good-looking cocktails. Prompt and friendly service. Quaint old building under a thatched roof but modern interior. Two of us were staying in the attached (quite recently-built) accommodation. Very stylish and breakfasts are superb. Happy to recommend. Restaurant is closed Mondays (and if you are staying over Monday morning a continental breakfast is supplied to the room - make your own toast with toaster provided).More

Ordered the Camembert as a starter at a staggering £14.50…..at the end my partner pointed out it was 9 days out of date!! Expiry not best before….well I have never heard such lies the lovely waitress informed the kitchen who came back and said “we...reuse the cardboard tubs” absolutely ludicrous it was either out of date or this pub is extremely unhygienic and reuses dirty tableware between customers! Why not just admit the error and apologise? Then the bill came and they charged us the £14.50 for it I obviously challenged it and was told sorry it was a mistake- I also politely asked for the staggering 12.5% table charge to be removed (for a table of 2!) as I prefer to leave a cash tip at which point the card machine got thrust at us and not even a thank you…..safe to say the cash tip remained in our pocket after that - will not be returning here ever.More

We are here once a number of years back and remember being spectacularly underwhelmed by the food and overwhelmed by the bill! So I was a little apprehensive when a friend suggested this place, but gave it another try. Very glad we did too, it's...become one of our go to's when hosting friends or family. Food is always a good standard, good wine and ale selection and the roast dinners are brilliant.More

Went here for a meal to celebrate a birthday. The staff were attentive and friendly and the food tasted excellent and was well presented. I had Calamari followed by Fillet Steak, which whilst pricey, was worth it in my opinion - you get what you...pay for. We didn't have Dessert as we were all too full. The only slight criticism was the beef burger which was very pink (raw). It does state this on the menu, but the centre of the burger was particularly pink. Aside from that, a really good meal and thoroughly recommend.More

There are not many classy gastropubs in South Oxfordshire but this one really knows about hospitality. You can just tell they have experience as the whole place oozes professionalism. Firstly the decor is impeccable, welcoming and interesting. The staff are polite and courteous. The wine...list is very well presented and thought out and the food menu is creative and appealing. We loved our lunch and will be returning. Well done chequers team, best lunch in a whileMore

We were looking forward to our meal as we were celebrating 2 birthdays. Been before Covid and it was very good. However we were put on a table with a speaker in the corner and the music was way too loud. We had to shout...to make ourselves heard. We asked 3 times for the music to be turned down. Only one member of staff really tried, but couldn't reduce it much. he said that was as low as he could get it. A restaurant should be about good food AND good conversation! The food was good but far too expensive for what it was. One of our party had a steak which didn't even include chips or a side! He ordered cherry tomatoes for which he was charged £6 just for a few. We also ordered a fairly ordinary bottle of merlot which was a staggering £42! We were very disappointed indeed - very overpriced and we were deafened to boot. Won't be returning.More
