We decided to eat here as it is dog friendly. On arrival we were shown into a room to the right that seats no more than 10 people. Felt a little secluded and there was NO atmosphere as there were no other customers. Saying that the staff were friendly and did bring a bowl of water for them. The menu... More

Popped into the white swan for lunch based on TA reviews and it just looked smarter than what was around. I'm so glad we had lunch here. We sat at the bar area. The Mrs had a lentil pie and I had the steak ciabatta. The steak was perfect and came with fries. The food was lovely and filling -... More

Our tour of local hostelries found us here on a Monday evening, three staff at the small bar, but all somewhat interested in the more important and clearly very complicated meal orders. A roaring fire was most welcoming and the pint of Black Sheep bitter was excellent, but a pint and vodka and coke were over £9 as opposed to... More

We stayed here for two nights and ate in the restaurant twice. It is easy to see why it is listed in the Good food guide. Although simple and unfussy, every course we had was beautifully cooked . There is some excellent wine on a varied list which is keenly priced. Service was excellent and we would recommend the hotel... More

We were in Pickering for the war weekend, knowing it gets very busy we booked in advance earlier in the year. Shown to our table and chose meal, wife's Chicken arrived under cooked came back cut up and obviously been zapped! Asked for bill which took ages and we had to remind them, when went to pay with debit card... More

It never occurred to to us to book Sunday lunch until the barman asked. Thank god we did it was excellent and reasonably priced too. I do know they ran out shortly after we ate so we were lucky. A definite for next year.

We visited Pickering on Sunday for the war weekend. Weather very disappointing so we decided to call here for Sunday lunch but never in a million years did we think we'd get in as the bar and adjacent room were full to the brim with revellers. However a very nice young man said that if we could wait 15 minutes... More

Had a wonderful evening meal last Sunday night with friends and my daughter and her husband. The whole meal was excellent with good selection and service second to none. They had had a very busy weekend but the service level never dropped and we really enjoyed our meal. I had mussels to start, rib eye steak and a dessert of... More

I'd seen good reviews so thought we'd try, but what a disappointment. Firstly we chose roast lamb, top of the menu & most expensive. The waitress brought the menu back saying their butcher hadn't come yesterday & they hadn't any lamb. They'd had a whole day to sort this out, not as if they were not near any shops, so... More

Description
The kitchen at the White Swan is focused on doing very little to excellent local ingredients with very rarely more than three flavours on a plate. We make just about everything from scratch in cluding the ketchup and we charge more for it than we would need to if everything came out of a freezer via a microwave. If you are looking for prissy and plastic fine dining then don't expect that here. If you are looking for mountains of cheap food and you don't care where it came from then there are better places to get it.However if you love proper food then I also promise you service from people who are genuinely pleased to be working in our lovely Inn. The AA deems our food good enough for 2 rosettes - and that is without a single smear, smudge or froth in sight. At the other end of the scale, we don't do wrapped butter portions or packets of sauce either (or piped musak). If you want real food in a relaxed experience with great service and a happy atmosphere then come on down. If you want something else - then don't say I didn't warn you.Victor Buchanan - Owner
