We recently moved to gorgeous Barnard Castle and since it was a bright sunny Autumnal day, we grabbed the opportunity to walk/explore. Just as we set out, it started to rain, but we decided it was only water and went anyway. We were not disappointed. Our half-hour stroll took us along a woodland path, through a residential area bringing us... More

Lovely clean bright restaurant. Good choice of food. I had Parsnip soup with a very nice home-made loaf. At £4-95 it was good value. My husband had Chowder with smoked haddock and prawns. We were a little concerned that at £8-95 it wouldn't be worth it. When it arrived it looked and smelled wonderful. Nice and thick with haddock, potatoes... More

Called in with friends for morning coffee and stayed for lunch. The menu is small and not terribly exciting but the sandwiches were freshly prepared and served with crisps and a side salad. The ladies were more adventurous and had feta and salad served with a bread which was rather heavy. This cafe gets very busy and by 12.30 you... More

Whenever we visit the Bowes Museum, we have coffee in the cafe on arrival before we see the exhibition, then we return for lunch. They have a captive audience for this cafe because the museum has no neighbouring competition. The main street has plenty cafes and pubs but it's a little walk away. The cafe surroundings are very pleasant and... More

We had both lunch and an afternoon snack. At Luch it was quite busy but we were quickly shown to another area close by so we didn't have to wait. The food was good and good value. There was a good choice of cake. It got much quieter towards the end of the afternoon and it made for a restful end... More

Broke off from our visit to the museum for some much needed refreshment and were delighted by the cafe. Very pleasant room with views over the grounds, considerate and professional staff and delicious food - can strongly recommend the ploughman's lunch which came with a range of goodies including a black cheese which was a very interesting experience - unfortunately... Had a lovely lunch here. The place was very clean and the staff very pleasant and efficient. The food was well presented and was reasonably priced. Hot milk served with the coffee was a bonus.

Barnard Castle is blessed with some wonderful cafes....and unfortunately The Bowes Museum is not one of them. Persuaded by a friend to try it again after three occasions when I said I would not return due to poor service. Yesterday I returned...but never again. The table we were given was one of the best with a window seat and had... More

Four of us decided to have Sunday lunch whilst visiting the museum, previously we had soup and a roll and tea in the restaurant, which was good. Sunday lunch was terrible, two dried slices of pork, a small Yorkshire pudding, a few small roast potatoes which were tepid, and a small dish of watery vegetables, the vegetable portion was the...
