Modern beautifully designed space behind this brilliant bookstore. Ended up dropping in every day of our holiday, though never a short stay because working one's way to the café through enticing shelves is challenging. Excellent coffee, clean simple modern cooking with twists on old favourites. Super Welsh Rarebit with chilli, home made Boston Baked Beans, and delicious small mince pies... More

Had a dread for visiting this place, based on the 1 star reviews here. But we arrived before the lunchtime rush and had no trouble getting seated. I had Welsh Rarebit, for the first time and it was really good, and I had a small portion of chunky chips on the side, they were very good too, but for 3.95... More

Outstanding in all respects - the food, the ambience and the service. Located within Richard Booth's amazing bookshop, the cafe is located at the rear and offers about 8 choices of mains plus desserts, snacks and drinks. We had venison pie with home cut chips, smoked haddock brandade and sloe/juniper cordial drinks - overlooking a nicely decorated courtyard in the... More

Having been disappointed with our choice of lunch venue in Hay on our last visit a few weeks ago, we decided to try this cafe today and were delighted to have such an enjoyable experience this time round. We were greeted straight away, shown to a table and a carafe of water and glasses were immediately placed on the table... More

Visited for lunch while in Hay. Despite arriving late in afternoon, the full lunch menu including specials was available. Service was quick and efficient and the food was very good. As other reviewers have commented this is set in the Richard Booth bookshop , and to a potent combination of books and good food. We will certainly go back again.

Visiting Hay with family, we spent an age looking through rows and rows of books and then had a light lunch in the cafe. Staff really friendly and food delicious. We had the Welsh Rarebit and chips with aioli. Most definitely the best Rarebit I have ever tasted. A must visit if in Hay and you're hungry whilst book hunting... More

Huge, varied bookshop with mixture of old and new with a stylish, bright cafe/restaurant serving delicious, well-chosen food and drinks. You could spend the day here!

This is our favourite place to eat in the Hay area and is on great form. Took a well travelled friend there for lunch who thought it was wonderful. Excellent food and service but he thinks the Bloody Mary deserves an accolade all if it's own-perhaps Crowned Bloody Mary?! Never had a finer one anywhere. Terrific even though packed out.

Lovely place for lunch and as it was a warm sunny day we were able to eat outside in the small courtyard.Welsh rarebit was delicious as were the deviled mushrooms . Good portions and cooked to order.Friendly staff and lovely open kitchen so patrons can see their food being prepared. The book shop is vast with a huge collection of... More

I have visited Hay sine 1991 but for some reason this I have never visited the bookshop cafe until now - October 2016. The cafe is great. The food is great value and very well prepared. The staff and very welcoming and the bookshop is a wonderful place in which to browse post meal.
