Visited at the weekend with my partner. The main doors into the restaurant were locked so we stood by the sign outside that said wait here to be served. Nobody came out to us for at least 10 minutes then eventually a customer went inside to let someone know we were standing there waiting! We didn't book but managed to get a table next to the water and had nice views. We ordered the drinks using the website on our phones and found the drinks to be quite expensive compared to other pubs in the area.

My son and I spotted this place, whilst walking through Newbury, on a hot day. Lovely spot over looking a lock of the Kennet and Avon canal, so decided to grab some lunch.
Usual Covid protocols on entry and told orders were through the Fullers app, found a table overlooking the lock and watched various barges use it during our visit. Couldn't believe how quite the setting was, since we were only a few hundred meters off the main street.
Service was pleasant enough, without being anything special , app worked fine, My haddock and chips was pretty good/tasty at ÂŁ14, drinks were a bit pricey , compared to other establishments nearby.
Looking at other reviews, maybe we caugth them on a good day but I can only speak as I find and we enjoyed our lunch there.

Food very average with very little choice. The drinks were well overpriced. The food potions were small . Dessert menu had two options and ice cream.
It was like London prices but 60 miles away. The bunked seating is so crammed the food had to be handled down and to get out everyone has to move it’s crazy.

A very lovely location with great outdoor seating by the water. We ordered 2 drinks and 1 bowl of chips. We waited for 1 bowl of chips for an hour, I know it was busy but it’s a bit slow considering our drinks were finished a long time before they arrived. The staff are very lovely and polite so it is not their fault whatsoever, maybe the kitchen are a bit slow or disorganised? Especially when it’s only 1 bowl of (frozen) chips…..it definitely ruins the dining experience which is such a shame and really lets the place down. I could see other people were also getting annoyed at having to wait so long for their meals so it wasn’t just us, it seemed to be everyone else too.

Visited the town for a short while whilst in the area and picked this pub/restaurant due to its idyllic location by the river.
Limited staff with only one person serving both drink and food orders.
Ordered a Lincolnshire Poacher and Branston Pickle on Ciabatta (no other choice of bread).
We were expecting a nice chunk of Lincolnshire cheese but the ciabatta contained a ration each of finely grated cheese which due to its portion size, it could have been any cheese as no real flavour.
Chips were standard chunky chips.
Disappointed to say the least for a ÂŁ9.50 meal at lunch.

I used to visit this pub all the time when I lived in the area. I brought a friend here for lunch and was disappointed in the service and food. I ordered a Caesar salad (£14!) and after the person taking the order ran upstairs to check if it was available they came back to say yes it was but there was no egg available as advertised. I said that was okay but to please hold the anchovies and asked if I could have some chicken instead. The server ran upstairs to ask if chicken was available and came back to say it was. I said that I didn’t want to be charged extra for the chicken as I wasn’t having the anchovies or egg. The unhelpful assistant manager Josh said that wasn’t possible because all the chicken in prepackaged in portions. I said that was fine I would just skip the chicken. The salad then arrived with anchovies. After removing them and finishing our meal and drink deeply underwhelmed by the lack of service thoroughout - a waiter came up and asked if I had ordered a bowl of chicken? He had a small bowl of dry looking roast chicken. It was pointless as we were waiting at that point for someone to simply clear our plates. For a meal that cost just under £50 for two it was disappointing.

Lovely place and location. Perfect table and ambience. But that's about all I can say which is positive for this pub. The food was very expensive for tiny portions and the shepherds pie tasted quite like what you'd expect at school dinners. The ÂŁ17 fish and chips tasted good but was the size of a large fish finger and would just about feed a child. The orange juice and lemonade we ordered cost ÂŁ6! And the menu said deserts were ÂŁ6.50 each and we were charged ÂŁ7 each. On mentioning this to the server, we were told there was nothing to be done as the menu was out of date and they have gone up in price. I'm pretty sure this is illegal!
Nobody came to clear our main course plates and the waiter arrived with the puds and tried to give them to us despite the fact that the table was still full of the dirty plates. He had to be told by us that they needed to be removed first.
One of our party used the accessible toilet and found the the toilet seat fell hittin on your back as you sat down and that the toilet roll dispenser fell hitting on your arm. The toilet roll dispenser was clearly broken as the roll itself was hygienically placed on the floor out of reach for a disabled person!
All in all, this place was extremely expensive for poor food and shoddy experience. Will not be returning.

The location is stunning and that's the only positive comment I can provide.
It was a busy Saturday with staff running around like headless chickens. It took over 10 minutes to order drinks at the bar as staff were flapping and in conversation over drinks/food orders.
We ordered a sharer of Hummus, Tsaksiki, Red Pepper Dip with Grilled Flat Bread at ÂŁ15.50. It came out with 3 small portions of the above (maybe two tablespoons for each) along with 4 pieces of small dried flat bread. This should not be advertised as sharer due to very small portion size. We received the cutlery 15 minutes later, by that time the plate was empty.
Thankfully we found a great place for food within walking distance after leaving.

A family of 4 cost £63 for meals the size of a child’s portion.
A Shepards pie with “veg” costs £16 which isn’t a problem for a generous serving.. unfortunately the veg consisted of 3 bits of broccoli and very few peas with the actual Shepards pie In a tiny little bowl.
The sharer platter as you can see from the picture is for x2 people costing £17! That’s just for bread and dips no meat.
We all left hungry and dissatisfied. Although the pub has a beautiful view and it’s nice to sit outside we won’t be returning, such a shame as the location is spot on for a summers day.

Met friends here for a spot of lunch. A nice setting, quite pleasant by the river.
Sadly, the food menu consisted of approx 8 items, with at least 3 unavailable. Options were chips or ÂŁ5+ toasties which had barely any filling, and seemed as if they had been run over by a car - not worth it at all. We waited a long time for the food to arrive.
Dietary requirements considered, some chose not to bother eating, and we did consider moving elsewhere.
The menu offered 'order at table' via a QR code that didnt work for any of us. Ordering at the bar being the only option, there wasnt a system of table or order numbering other than "big table by the window".
We only drank coca-cola, with one lime and soda that needed stirring. After asking for a stirrer, straw or similar in this bustling pub, we we given a fork...
I wouldnt recommend for any more than drink.

Popped in for a late family lunch on a Sunday. Limited menu of burgers and toasties available, with some items items not being available at all.
Not what you would expect from a Gastro type pub or one of the larger pub chains.
The burger and chips looked and tasted less appetising than the more well known fast food burger chains.
In addition, the high price of a glass of wine (over ÂŁ11.00), was no better than most house wines.
Won’t be returning in the near future!

This canal side pub should be amazing. It is situated in a fabulous place just before a lock. The menu was extremely limited and the food portions were small and overpriced. The cider was not kept well and had a soapy taste. Three of us ordered meals. Two came out together and the third came out 15 minutes later after an enquiry to where it was.

Went for a family meal for Father’s Day and very disappointed with the food and portion size .
The chicken salad was served in a tiny bowl of just small chunks of chicken in a sauce and not accompanied by any leaves or salad of any sort?
The Shepherd’s pie description sounded good but again served in a tiny bowl on a big plate with a few peas. No sign of the broccoli or broad beans mentioned on the menu .
The bill for 4 of us with a drink was nearly ÂŁ90.
Lovely location but perhaps better for a drink outside but definitely not for food as well.

Friendly staff met us sat outside by the canal, lovely setting.
Ordered drinks and the Fish Pie. Lunch arrived lovely vegetables.
The Fish Pie hot outside and almost cold in the middle where the mash and fish was.
Told our server who apologised and said Chef would do new ones offered free desserts. Another fish pie appeared after about 15 mins. - couldn’t believe it the fish and mash half way down was tepid such a shame the pie looked good.
A young man said he would refund the fish pie but we hadn’t paid. So he explained we didn’t have to pay he would give us the pie and seemed to think we would eat a tepid pie it if it was free! No way, not safe
Our original server was very friendly Such a shame lovely setting
We left to find lunch which we did not far away

The two positives are friendly and helpful staff plus a lovely location by the canal. This is a Fuller’s pub so I expect to pay a bit more for a pint so no problem there. However the food is overpriced and poor quality with 7/8 options as mains. We ordered the beef burger and my partner is not one to complain but said this is the worst beef burger he has ever had. I had the Wordolf salad which was described as having walnuts and crispy cheese. Well it had neither of these just a bowl of cubed apple with a few halved grapes, very small amount of celery and a very tiny sliced chicken breast. Both dishes were £16!!
We reserved a table for two but this was on a shared table with 4 other people! As there was no umbrella for shade we asked to moved inside and this was sorted out quickly.
I don’t often write reviews and wish I had read the reviews before we visited. We won’t be returning.
