As locals of Carlisle know, Botchergate isn't renowned for the quality of anything, really. So I wasn't expecting anything amazing of a Thai restaurant on Carlisle's most infamous street. But how wrong was I! Situated above the old Cumberland Hotel, the décor hasn't been changed much - and it's really nice to see some fabulous original features. It's not very... More

I visited for dinner on Thursday evening, eating by myself. I ate fr their Malaysian menu and enjoyed the lamb rendang with steamed rice. It was quiet with few other customers. The staff were friendly and the service was prompt. A starter, main course and two glasses of wine came to about £30. which I thought was reasonable.

Excellent restaurant, fabulous food. On the way in a customer coming out recommended the chicken rendang which we tried - it was fabulous. This has to be one of the best restaurants we have eaten in. I only wish we were staying in Carlisle longer as we would definitely have gone back. Scrummy cocktails too!!

Very pleasant meal, interesting menu and tasty food. Because the menu is both Thai and Malaysian, this limits your choice of each, but we enjoyed our meal.

The staff and food was really good. The mixed seafood starter for two was excellent and the fish, prawn and squid was full of flavour and very authentically Thai. Main course was the Chicken Gang Massaman accompanied with lemon scented rice and it was all full of flavour. The decor is excellent and its great restaurant that I would highly... More

One word, superb! Service was friendly and efficient and food was excellent. We had Chicken Rendang and Jungle Curry along with netted bread, coconut rice and noodles for our main. Delicious! We definitely recommend this hidden gem and will be back.

Another great surprise in Carlisle, a restaurant serving food reminding us of fab holidays in the Far East. Followed advice to have seafood sharing starter- lovely mix of flavours & nice amount of chilli heat. Excellent curry and yummy phad Thai noodles to follow. Great atmosphere in the wood panelled room & great service from Sharon & his team. A... More

We drove down to Carlisle as we were disappointed with the restaurant options in Gretna and were very glad we did. The Royal Outpost is a charming, wood-panelled upstairs restaurant serving incredibly authentic Thai and Malaysian food. The generous sizzling seafood starter for two had an incredible variety of flavours. My main was the captain's curry: a more nuanced massaman... More

The seafood platter starter is sublime. I can also recommend the Chicken Rendang. The soft noodles and the coconut rice are both wonderful. One of the best meals I have ever eaten in lovely surroundings. The staff are friendly and efficient. Was pleasantly surprised when the bill came.
