Read the mainly positive reviews but that did not prepare my wife and I for how lovely this hotel is. Tim on reception gave us a really friendly welcome . Decor in the hotel is in keeping with the listed building and spotlessly clean. Arrived...at our room 18 and were so surprised to see the room was a duplex and very well appointed as was the shower room. We have stayed at 5 star hotels not as nice as this. Didn’t eat in the restaurant which I believe is highly rated as we were meeting friends at a local restaurant. We had breakfast served in the lovely dining room and it was excellent. Thoroughly would recommend this hotel.More

Me and my husband have stayed at greyfriers twice now and totally loved it, the first was for husbands 60th, and the second time for our engagement weekend. We thought we would love to spend Christmas at the hotel on the 24th and 25th of...December, we where told the suite was available but we couldn't have Christmas lunch as there is a waiting list. I asked the receptionist surely guests staying at the hotel should have priority over the public, she replied no its first come first served, A man called tim said there was 2 sittings available 12 o'clock and 6pm?, I explained we would not want to eat a 7 course meal at 12 o'clock after eating our breakfast, and the 6pm would be to late, we are british and we traditionally eat Christmas lunch about 3 oclock. We are so disappointed and upset with the hotel, we love the hotel we have had great times and memories there. Its a shame that we won't ever go back, but we feel the hotel should look after the regular guests who return to the hotel rather than the public from the outside.More

we stayed as part of their Luxury Escape ( 3 nights for price of 2,dinner on arrival, free mini bar and breakfast in a suite), the Hotel is stunning, the staff amazing, food quality is excellent and way above what we expected, drinks are vey reasonable,on-site parking at rear...of Hotel, situated a stones throw from Colchester Town. We had The Coach House Suite which was fabulous, stunning decor, marble bathroom and heated floor, noisy at times as it faces onto East Hill but in the early hours it was fine. The rear patio is an excellent space to unwind after a days events with well mannered and attentive staff. We spoke with the Manager this morning regarding our stay and he was excellent, wouldn't hesitate to recommend this Hotel, the value for money is superb.More

It’s the second time I’ve been to greyfriars and both times I’ve come away feeling a bit ‘meh’ to be honest. The first time I had the lobster cocktail and it was £13/£14 and very watery/nothing special. And the pork which was on the small...side portion wise. The second time the food was okay, again spent £10 on a soup which was nice and a fillet steak, which four of us ordered and they got muddled up between MR and M. So we all got the wrong ones. Highlight was the bernaise sauce. Overall the food was okay but for the prices you want more than okay. The service really was the biggest pitfall. We sat at 8, didn’t get our starters until after 9. We had to ask for more drinks, ask for our bill, ask for the card machine. We had to prompt a lot which isn’t ideal when you’re out. The service was mediocre at best. The atmosphere is abysmal. Really lacking, quiet, and ‘music’ consisted of ‘all by myself’ and Michael Jackson? Not the ideal dinner music. I definitely won’t be going back after both failed attempts. Shame as the afternoon tea here is the best in Essex for me!More

We stayed at Greyfriars Hotel in Colchester as a base for the area.  Overall the hotel was OK, but as a tourist we felt it wasn't that practical.   What did we like about the hotel, it is very clean and semi-modern, with free mini bar...(a couple of beers and soft drjnks) and good coffee.  It was great to see they offered free Netflix and Amazon Prime tv channels.  Lastly, you could not fault the staff as they were all extremely pleasant and helpful.  The location of the hotel on the High Street is also great for exploring Colchester.  Where did we feel it could have been better?   Firstly, we booked a wrong type of room and acknowledge it was our mistake, but the junior suite with 2 levels is definitely designed for the business traveller rather than a tourist.   The mezzanine level which houses the bed has steep steps, which is not so good if one gets up during the night in the dark!   The rooms could have also benefited from a small sofa rather than 2 small uncomfortable chairs.  Lastly, whilst the room had plenty of plug sockets, there were no USB sockets - which is almost essential these days! Would we stay here again one asks, then the answer is most definitely, but in a different room.  More

Not a thing missed to create the “5 star experience”! We have travelled in every continent an stayed in every sort of hotel, including a couple of 5 star ones. This hotel lives up to its claims. We were here for a reunion, and had...a suite which was subtly and beautifully luxurious, from the furnishings to the toiletries. Excellent, discreet but friendly service smoothed the way. Food was very good too. Well done.More

Came for a little bit of time by myself in the evening just for a drink and some sobert. Both delicious, sobert is handmade and the peach is incredible. Was severed by Riorand and Jimmy whom we're both incredibly lovely, charming and very helpful with...everything I needed. Would love to come again for another relaxing evening. Thank you.More

We had so many good things about Grey Friars, the boutique hotel in the middle of Colchester. Our room was great, the food delicious. There were issues with the room and the breakfast service which we brought to the attention of the staff and these...were dealt with. Our highlights were sitting on the terrace enjoying a bottle of wine and eating tasty food on our first lunchtime there. We also thoroughly enjoyed our two evening meals in the restaurant. Would we stay here again? Yes.More

Greyfriars is a lovely hotel in the heart of Colchester. We spent 3 lovely nights here and would highly recommend it. The breakfasts were great, and we had a delicious dinner one evening. The room is modern and comfortable and the staff are super helpful...and friendly. Whatever we asked for it was provided straight away. Parking is very easy. The only criticism was a long wait for lunch on the day of our arrival, the kitchen was super busy and we were hungry! There was a small wedding party at the same time so I think it was just a matter of being too busy to keep everyone happy at the same time!More
