The cafe looks nice from the outside so enticed us in when walking by. Going in we were lead to a room that looked tacky with distressed plastic table cloths and ugly decor. I think with some effort that space could look and feel cosy....The outside of the cafe said it catered for vegans but the menu made no mention of it apart from the breakfast was not a good offering and wasnt available at that time anyway. I noticed a vegan brownie advertised on a chalk board and so ordered that and an oat latte hoping they would have alternative milks as they werent on the menu. They only had soy and the vegan brownie wasnt vegan that day so we just had the coffee. The waitress who served us felt awkward and it got the feeling she wasnt used to seeing people like us in their. I came away feeling like I would never come back i think with some work it could be a nice cosy and friendly cafeMore

We were delighted to see that Cafe 21 has reopened. We popped in for lunch and all the favourites were still on the Menu. Obviously there are fewer tables now but they are taking care with the Covid safety measures. Food was delicious and well...cooked, as usual. The beetroot and goats cheese tart daily special was a masterpiece.More

We were escorted to a secret garden area behind the cafe which was in dappled shade and informal. It was lovely. The male waiter knew exactly how to handle gluten free and asked if I was just intolerant or celiac. It was reassuring to know...he knew what he was talking about. We had a mix of dishes; chilli, baked potato and sausage sandwich. All were good, could have been warmer but were all tasty. We had two desserts; lemon meringue sundae and syrup sponge pudding (which was gluten free!!!). Good range of gf desserts. On the whole a lovely experience and we will definitely go back.More

Came here on the way to the Castle. Wide ranging, good value menu. Served quickly and staff friendly. Enclosed garden with large umbrellas so still good if raining. Beef chilli was warming and tasty. Toasted roasted vegetable sandwich got thumbs up too.

Such great food here. We had a special that was a veggie lasagne once - it was the best lasagne we've ever had, hope it makes it permanently on the menu.

Set in the heart of Colchester and very well positioned lies this little gem. We had breakfast here on 29.1.2020 much to our delight. Chose one traditional breakfast and one vegetarian breakfast. Both were excellent value for money and served with aplomb. Obviously very fresh,...local ingredients and very tasty. Nice staff and has a small courtyard at the back of the building for nice days - which I am sure would enhance the experience. But both inside rooms are very nicely furnished and lovely old furniture. Great experience.More

The cottage was lived in originally by members of our family so we always enjoy the cosy atmosphere. I booked a particular table for lunch Christmas 2 weeks ago as we needed space for a disabled relative, we were upset to be given a different...table which was not as handy for our needs. I was told by the staff that this hadn't been noted!.The food as always was very good and couldn't be faulted. We will come back but shame our booking was not honoured.More
