When a chef won't eat in her own restaurant what does that say? Our visit on 6th December was a disaster. When we arrived they told us there might be a delay as everyone was booked in for the same time! I ordered sparkling water to drink. It was from a large bottle as they had no small bottles. It... We went to one our favourite pubs for British food. The pub has changed hands and no one we in there. Ordered Steat & ale pie, mushy peas, Chips. Chips handmade and very good.Peas a little hard but luke warm. Pie looked ok couldn't cut through the pastry, one side of the pie the meat was hard as if it... More

What historically was a friendly, warm local pub with good food has turned into a nasty, soulless establishment where even the chef pronounced she wouldn't eat here. The management attitude is simply appalling, the food tacky, cheap and flavourless and the atmosphere of a condemned library. If you have a choice don't go here - eating stale bread in an... More

This used to be a really nice pub. You know there is something wrong when a pub has no lager. Opted for the hob goblin which I really like and as it was on draught I thought this should be nice. How wrong it tasted like cleaning fluid, my friend took one sip and left the rest of his pint.... More

The current management have only been in situ for seven weeks I am told, therefore it does take time for everyone to adjust to the change. Personally I think it is unfair to criticise until you have given the new management a fair "crack of the whip". We were there last night and had a lovely meal. The new management... More

The place was virtually empty. We should have realized then something was a miss. PROs There are none CONs Smell of damp Mold on the... More

A friend attempted to book The British Oak for a birthday celebration meal. was told the kitchen closes at 8:30. The website says the kitchen closes at 9:30 so I rang the pub. The kitchen closes at 8:30 and the website was from the previous management team. SUGGEST YOU RING THE BRITISH OAK AND ENQUIRE DIRECTLY'

We have too few homely locals serving homecooked food left so lets not lose another. In times of change there may be occasions where the food quality dips and peaks, Don't let one bad meal spoil your view of this little diamond, check for yourself or maybe give them another try. Having booked a family meal I was worried by... More

After being turned away from the Black Bull at Midgley at 2.50pm because they "close between 3 and 5", we headed home but decided to stop on the way at the British Oak to try and get something to eat. We were greeted by a frienldy Lucy, who took us to a table and asked what we would like to... More
