I've been here a couple of times, though the first time was around 2018 I think. Back then I remember the starters tasting a lot better - fresher, and more flavorful. This time (May 2022) they tasted like they'd been frozen then fried in slightly...too cool oil. The starters were also in smaller portions than other Indian restaurants I've tried around the city. The main courses were really yummy though, with good portion sizes and just... much better than the starters. I didn't get a dessert, but everyone who did enjoyed them. Again, good portion sizes there. The service is fine, but the decor is a bit aged and my seat had a dark mark that looked like maybe someone had bled through during their cycle and they hadn't been able to get the stain out? With all that in mind, I'd come back for takeaway rather than a sit-down dinner.More
Stopped by while on roadtrip, easy to find, kind people, reasonable priced - but most important; yummy, authentic indian food! Will stop again!
Very nice authentic Indian place, luckily a person on the street told us about this place as it is not in the tourists area. Very good food and reasonable price, but all is expensive in Norway
Food was authentic and taste was good. We had lamb curry and shrimps in spicy tomato based gravy. Portions are generous. Price : is above average compared with prices of Indiana food if you eat in Asia. But eating out in Norway is expensive. The...restaurant should have a better signage to have better visibility. Otherwise, overall good service. Ambience : simple, clean and spacious eatery.More
Went here for dinner early in January. Many guests, but not too crowded. The waiter was attentive and we didn't have to wait for our drinks. Our tikka masalas (strong Norwegian level) were served ca. 20 min later, but before that we had finished a...delicious 1st. dish on the house. We found the dinner both tasty and spicy ;-) and that is what we came for. The atmosphere is more like a cafe, the refrigerates are placed in the restaurant, not in the kitchen, and the restaurant had too bright lightning......, more suitable for families than romance?More
Thanks for the kind review :) Hope to see u again! Charan Singh Malhi Owner and Manager New Tajmahal Indisk Restaurant i Tønsberg
Come here with my family fairly often and we always enjoy it. Family owned and operated Indian restaurant. The service varies, depending on how many customers there are at any given time, but it is always friendly. We are usually three generations, ranging in age...from 8 to 68. They always do well on the spice level, no matter what dishes we choose. The adults like spicy food, while the kids prefer mild, and we always leave happy and satisfied.More
The place may look a bit dated but the food is very tasty. If you are Norwegian: choose the Norwegian spice level, everything above that is too hot to handle - speaking from experience. We had prawn biryani with two types of naan bread, especially...the naan with nuts and fruit is SO GOOD! Also, if you decide on something spicy, make sure to order mango lassi on the side. The yoghurt will neutralize the spice and it's a delicious drink in itself. For dessert we had something typical Indian which I don't remember the name of - it was some green ice cream with whipped cream and sauce which was to be honest a little too strange for our liking. Overall we had a good experience here and we would recommend this place to anyone who likes tasty and affordable Indian food.More
Thank you for visiting and welcome back :)
Had panang and tika masala, really good and well spiced (you can choose level), and large portions. Recommended
Classic great indian! Nice family restaurant with proper food without shortcuts. Dont sleep on this one if you visit Tønsberg!
Poor english, They take our food away before its even finished... we order more rice and she takes the rice plate wheres theres still left... About food was okay taste. i think a bit too much sauce n there wasnt much lamb / chicken on...it. Too expensive for the quality.More
Sorry for the incident. It usually does not happen. I have to take it up with the stuff. We promise to get better:)
I had the pleasure of dining here with my family and I was really surprise by the quality of the food. They had great service as well which is not given at a restaurant in norway. Generous portions and value for money!
Big positive surprise this restaurant. Very friendly staff and cosy restaurant. Delicious food in large portions. We will return here
Thank u for the kind words. You are welcome back:)
Paneer tikka masala, not something I’d tried before, was really tasty. Good spicy food (not hot), made to your liking (mild, medium, hot). Large, well made naan bread Delicious lassi. Free popadoms for all diners (1/2 pop each). Friendly service, English language menus, typical Norwegian...prices.More
Thank you for visiting us and for the kind words:) Hope to see u again
This restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived, although we did visit late in the evening. The air conditioning works, and the tables are comfortably spaced. There's no music playing, which can make for a slightly uncomfortable atmosphere, and the decor is starting to look...a bit worn and dated. They have covered the tablecloths in packing plastic for some reason - presumably to make them easier to wipe - but it does evoke the feeling of a truck-stop or buffet restaurant. Still, the service was good, and the food was brought out promptly. Popadoms are free, which is a nice touch, and they're prepared freshly. Having had my expectations set fairly low by my first impression, I was very pleasantly surprised with the food. The sauce was rich and tasty, the portion generous, and ample rice was included in the price. The presentation was also nice, with the classic tea-light warmer, and an artful garnish. My partner was eating something from vegetarian side of the menu - something which classically Indian restaurants score quite poorly on - but even she was pleased with the food. We didn't have room for dessert, but they have a tasty-looking kulfi I've got my eye on for next time.More
