Since the very beginning, 25 years ago, this restaurant in Oslo's Grünerløkka has been renowned for its excellent food, wide selection of wines and friendly service. Business people relax in the homely atmosphere for a good meal and friends gather for an informal evening out. The menu features lamb and crayfish as specialities, when in season. Next door is Norway's very first winebar, Dr. Kneipp's, with a wine list of hundreds of vintages, and a very reasonably priced dish of the day.
We booked in advance for a Saturday evening at 7.30 and on arrival it was already busy.
There was a friendly welcome and the server was happy to help explain the special menus.
We selected a bottle of rioja reserva and we were happy with...it as there was very little within our budget.
My husband had the menu which included meat, so had a coconut soup with fish, ox cheek and then chocolate mousse cake. He was very happy with all of his dishes which we flavoursome and well presented. I had the ravioli to start which was delicious but the pasta was too thick. My duck confit was well cooked but the pickled veg it came with were a little too much.
Overall we thought that the food and service were good and the atmosphere really enjoyable.More
Enjoyed a very pleasant dinner with friends. The menu is short but well thought out and the presentation and quality of food is very good. The wine suggestion was unusual but spot on.
The staff were pleasant, spoke good English and were professional and attentive....All in all a very nice experience.More
Markveien Mat og Vinhus is situated in the trendy hipster- area Grünerløkka in Oslo, but the interior makes you feel like being in someones livingroom or in a cabin in the mountains. The place is so cozy with an amazing atmosphere!
There is a selction...of meat and fish dishes, also a daily menu and desserts. From the daily menu it is possible to create your own 3-, 4 or 5- course meal for a set price.
They have a very nice wine- selection (there is also Markveien Vinbar = winebar just next to the restaurant, the restaurants "little sister"), and the waiters are knowledgeable and very helpful with picking wine to go with the food.
The prices are fair compared to the level of the food and the service, but remember that this is Norway!
Good food from a quite limited menu. They do have a daily offer of both meat and fish that can be taken as a part of a set menu. You can the choose between 3, 4 or 5 courses.
Excellent service from the waiters. Informed...us well about the food upfront and they was always there when we needed them.More
We went to Markveien because it had good reviews and was located near our flat. It was an excellent choice. We had the duck and then I had the ananas coconut dessert and it was great ! The wine card is excellent, though obviously in...Norway expect high prices.
The design makes you feel as if you were on holidays in the Norwegian mountains and not in the middle of Oslo.More
There is not more to say than a wonderful meal, great tasting and excellent service. One detail I noticed was that when two of us, who were early and had stopped in Dr. Kneipps for glass of bubbly, brought our glasses of water along into...the restaurant proper, the waiter exchanged the third water glass so we all had similar glasses. This is symptomatic, in my experience, with the level of attention to detail from the staff.More
