As a foodie and neighbor a five minute walk away, I have visited Lysebu many times over the years. Before covid my son has attended cooking classes here, and it was a place to enjoy a local gourmet experience and the best beer in town....It had produce from the hotels greenhouse, forrest, beehive or chicken coop. The chefs also sourced produce from the areas around and cooked the most wonderful dishes. They also used to have a very engaged crew of chefs with beer or wine makers dinners etc. Our experience here today was ok, but not the gourmet experience I have experienced so many times before. One thing is the food. But also with the knowledge of the sommelier or waiter explaining the choices, or just the expected minimum of the waiter explaining the courses at all, was missing. The food and wine was slapped on the table with no explanation. We soon learned that the reason for the menu staying at the table, was because you need to read it every course to make sense of the wine pairing. portion size of food and wine was more generous than before. Like a taverna. But having a five course meal, less is sometimes more. I could not eat all the food. To the foods The first course of cod was well balanced and really delicious. The second dish was also ok, but wine leaves and cheese has little to do with local produce. The main dish of pork was so dry I never made it to the goose liver in center (not a very contemporary/animal welfare choice either so ok to miss) The waiter never asked why we didn’t eat it. She did however remove the plate of the second course I liked before I had finished it. Dessert was really good with a grey combination of the white chocolate and perfectly balanced sorbet with crunchy crumble. The same was the wine pairing, but the waiter had little enthusiasm and knowledge. The main star of the show this time was the wine pairing saving the main course of drenched dry meat and cold potatoes. Sadly we never got to know who the sommelier, or got the explanation of why this particular wine was chosen to the dish. Last time we came the sommelier owned the restaurant floor and engaged with all the tables. I could not see him here today. A ok hotel restaurant, but used to be so much more. We will try again when the next chef arrives. Maybe we can enjoy syrup of fresh pine sprouts in weird combinations of meats and veggies, whole grilled pork from the grill outside, or all the other exciting food experiences we have had before again. It would be marvelous and we would come back! We will keep an eye of the veggie garden. It is a mirror of what to expect inside the restaurant.More
