A little gem, food was great and excellent coffee (really hot and tasty). Kind and friendly server, quick service and food. We recommend the meat ball menu where you can choose from different meats (or vegetarian), sauces and sides.

We had a fab meal. The pizza was very good as well as the salmon and the din ball, something unique in this restaurant. Highly recommended

Stopped in here for a quick bite for lunch. I chose the Chevre Salad and my partner chose the fish and chips. About half full restaurant and the waiter was quick to serve us and the food came shortly afterwards. The salad was AMAZING, full...of flavours! My partner was very happy with his fish and chips too. Would recommend if anyone wants a nice lunch in a quiet and comfortable placeMore
Cafe chess matt Oslo is a restaurant that has been established for a couple of ten years. Here you will have a varied selection of dishes. Announce your lunch here. nice service. The restaurant is located in the middle of Oslo and is easy to...get to but parking you have to do in one of the parking houses rogerwMore
Cafe Sjakk Matt has been my hang out cafe since the 1980's. It has nice atmosphere and welcoming staff. Most times I go here for lunch or for a drink.
I have given this place several chances, and every time I tell myself: NEVER again! I ordered a chicken club sandwich without bacon, I understood that the waiter was new and did not understand Norwegian so I placed my order in two languages. When the...meal came it was with Bacon! Oh the guy is new the new other waiter said. I waited for 30 minutes for a new sandwich. The bread was of cheap kind you get at any superstore, egg was rubbery and chicken dry! Most disgusting food i have ever had.More
Me and my colleague came here around 11 AM for lunch on a thursday. One guy standing in the bar, but didn't look up even I walked past him. We wanted to wait to order until our last colleague came to the place. The waiter...stressed that he had a big lunch order and wanted us to order quickly, but we were the only ones in the restaurant! After we ordered the food was delivered to the table with no introduction, and just placed the food there and left in a hurry. Simply pasta, with chicken and a butter package. Our experience left us that the people that work here doesn't care. They just work there and do what is minimum expected them to do.More
This place has been surviving for many years in spite of rather poor food and service. But the location is very good in the dead center of Oslo near to cinemas, theatres, concert halls , train station etc etc. It is quite ok to meet...for a beer or a glass of wine before going out to the next place. But do not expect any special good food here.More
Went with two other family members before the weekend. We had ravioli that had no taste at all. Served with bread. One had a burger that tasted ok. We'll not be back next time in town.
We went there for a beer. After we sat down, a waiter came and took the dirty plates from on our table, but he never came back to wipe the sticky table or to give us the menu - we had to go and get...the menus ourselves. The place has many mixed styles of interior and nothing is completed: A great glass painting covering one wall, some stylish lights hang over a long table, but none of this matches the tired and far from completed chess style. Some of the walls have TV screens. I wonder if they used to show chess games on. But when we were there, pictures of dishes and drinks were rolling on the screens. There were a lot of people there, but also some available tables. The place seems to get by economically , but lacks someone with passion for the place to run it.More
I had lunch here. We were a party of three with an hour for lunch. We ordered standard food from the 'small dishes' menu. After a long time, my friends food came but mine did not. The waitress (who was very strange) avoided contact with...us and eventually one of my friends got the attention of the waiter who apologised and eventually brought my food. Despite serving the neighbouring table, the waitress never apologised or made eye contact. The food (lasagna) was absolutely terrible, as was my friends chicken soup. No discount for the extreme delay. Go elsewhereMore
we went to the other location last time we came to Oslo and we were very impressed. this trip was no different. it was excellent combination of great food, great service from Danielle and great wine. Very clean and fresh food in a nice atmosphere...that is very upscale without being too expensive. We ate the chicken club sandwich, fish and chips and delicious Italian wine. For Oslo, the prices were very reasonable.More
Nothing to write home about, the food was slightly underseasoned in general, and no salt on the table, but service was good and prompt.
I tried this cafe last night as when I've been driving past in taxis, it always looks busy with people sitting outside. It does stay open later than a lot of other places nearby so I was glad it was a) open and b) serving...food. I had the bread and aioli which was half cold toast (supposed to be like that) and half fresh bread. Very garlicky aioli! Then I had chicken quesadilla. I was thankful, it must be said for internationally recognisable words such as burrito, spaghetti bolognese and lasagne, but to be fair, the staff did all speak English. I agree with other reviews that it is unclear whether you order at the bar or at the table. I went to the bar and they then came over to me at the table. Friendly staff. They did like to whip the menu away from you almost before you'd finished ordering though! I did quite well on the Norwegian menu and ordered the brownie (two very small slices) and added vanilla icecream which was charged as an extra. The theme is chess, Sjakk Matt meaning Check Mate and there are chess boards there if you fancy a game. Bit difficult for a solo diner! So, in summary, grateful it was open, food was fine, not much atmosphere but it does seem to be busier earlier in the evenings.More
