Schnattl used to be my favorite restaurant during my time in Vienna. Willi Schnattl the owner and Gault Millau chef is an artist. I personally feel Schnattl’s way to celebrate food is unmatched. The restaurant is conveniently located close to the Ring Strasse. A very nice place with an amazing little garden in the back. Don’t forget to have one... More

Somewhere in between modern and traditional Austrian food (but don't expect great innovation). Beef broth with marrow knödel was excellent. Wienerschnitzel was as it should be, and served with lemon and good quality potatoes with parsley, and an excellently fresh green salad. The dessert was also good: a selection of small desserts dishes, that all were good but not outstanding.... More

Let's say that everything else was good but tomato soup was like canned crushed tomatoes on plate with some sour cottage cheese. I found it very strange because otherwise food was nicely presented and delicious. We dined in a courtyard. It was supposed to be nice but almost every guest around smoked!!! That was simply terrible. Never experienced anything like... More

We took the 'day menu' for only 9.90 E. It was a wonderful fish ragout dish. (itr was Friday of course). Absolutely worth going for. (beware the bread offered was 5 E on the bill...). The courtyard is beautiful and serves as a terrace. Truly wonderful cooking!

Schnattl is a family friendly restaurant offering European and Modern Viennese Cuisine. Only high quality products mainly from local sources are served. Food is excellent, service friendly. Nice and cosy atmosphere.

We went on a Tuesday lunchtime, so perhaps not fair to judge by almost empty dining room. The room is beautiful - old panelling painted up nicely. We had a menu of the day, with fish followed by pork, then stunning poppyseed dumplings with cranberries. Old wine bottles around the place suggest an exceptional wine list but we stuck to... More

A very nondescript place from the outside, the multiple small rooms open into a quaint open courtyard surrounded by apartments but wonderfully comfortable in the right weather. Found the service, the wine selections, the menu (we were a large group so it was pre-fix) very classically Austrian and wonderful.

I went for lunch after hours and still they were very kind and pleased to serve me. Asked for typical food and it was pretty nice. A comfortable place, warm ambient. Good red wine and sausages.

Staying in Josefstadt

Neighborhood Profile
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theater, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighborhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicenter. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighborhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.
