Food and ambience

The epitome of a Viennese coffee house In 1873 Franz Landtmann opened “Vienna’s most elegant cafe location“. Even today, the Landtmann ist the epitome of Viennese coffee house culture and one of the last grand cafes along Vienna’s Ringstraße. Come and enjoy the wonderful world of Viennese hospitality and tradition, as have numerous prominent guest over the decades, from Sigmund Freud to Gustav Mahler or Hillary Clinton.

We chose to go to this cafe on our last day in Vienna. After 1 month in Austria, this was amongst one of the worst meals we had. The food was almost inedible and was expensive for what it was. We ordered salads which were...drowned in vinagrette, we had 'fresh' orange juice which is not freshly made on the premises/freshly made to order as the word 'fresh' suggests (although the waiter assured us that it was fresh!) and we had crepes which were totally smothered in powdered sugar (one of the portions was with chocolate sauce - this was smothered in an uninteresting chocolate sauce as well as powdered sugar) . In addition the staff are rather snooty. I thought that we had previosly had a good experience at this cafe on previous visits but think I must confused the cafes - none of us could find any redeaming features for Cafe Landtmann. There are so many fantastic cafes to go in Vienna with great food/great decor and friendly staff, choose somewhere else to go.More

Vienna is its own country. It is Europe, but it is very Eastern and Slavic, too. Fascinating! Old. There is some air of Kaïserreich swinging through the whole city like a forlorn melody. Wow!, and this place! First time I came there with Randolph there...was a yellow Porsche in front of the café like in the video by Bilderbook "Heirate mnich". Great! Inside the waiters are distuingished and distant and nice. They do their job perfectly. We had a polished time there with some, as you call it, kopergroen, I mean, patina. Just splendid. Simply the best classic coffee shop in Vienna: it is very classy but still feels cozy. The waiters are way nicer than in other places in Vienna and Austria. There's a large selection of cakes, drinks, and Austrian specialities. I visited multiple times for coffee...and cake, as well as breakfast, and it was always delicious. Highly recommend the thick hot chocolate, the crispy and spicy Apfelstrudel, and the traditionnal Kaiserschmarrn.More

Needless to say that the Café Landtmann is part of the must-do things in Vienna. A beautiful moment having brunch there, with fabulous cakes, great choice and excellent service.

We had been to this cafe before on previous visits to Vienna and wished to take our daughter and grandson to experience a real Vienna coffee house. The cafe was busy on this winter’s evening especially with the Christmas market in front of the town...hall. We thought we would be unable to have dinner as the cafe looked full. We were escorted to the rear of the restaurant where we had never been before. With its wooden walls and cosy atmosphere it was just the place for a seven year old to have his first taste of Weiner schnitzel. Thank you to the wonderful waiters who helped to make this occasion so special for our grandson. They seemed to take delight in watching his surprise when he saw the size of the schnitzel. Our grandson had to have apple strudel for dessert. We all had a dinner to remember and one our grandson still talks about.More

If you go anywhere in Vienna, go here. A lovely spot to sit and have breakfast or a cup of tea. We went at the beginning of December when they had a beautiful Christmas tree out the front. Service was very good and it was...busy not just with tourists but the locals too.More

This place is busy and I would definitely recommend booking. The cafe itself is beautiful and buzzing and the menu is full of different things to eat. All the food we eat tasted great and was beautifully presented. The service was friendly and attentive.

Cakes look great in this historical coffee house, but there are not something special that you are not able to find them anywhere else! The cappuccino was really cold when served and cake was not as fresh that backed the same day. But still after...walking for hours to visit the museums, it would be nice to sit in a historical Viennese coffee house and have a cup of HOT cappuccino and chocolate cake.More
