The Landtmann is one of the most important and best coffeehouse institutions in Vienna. The elevated location right next to the Burgtheater and the venerable exterior and interior do the rest to make it a must for many visitors to Vienna. Although the days of sympathetic, snooty and omniscient classical head waiters are over, the youngsters who work at Landtmann provide very good service. Only very young waiters are sometimes still a bit overwhelmed and therefore not always visible. The finishing touches are still missing, e.g. it happened to us that the pot of black was simply placed on the table for the hurried Neumann, next to the cup with the Obers. It used to be common among experienced waiters that this was also poured for the guest. The ritual is part of the whole and the price. The latter is also the Landtmann's sore spot: the portions (especially of the pastries) are getting smaller and smaller, but the prices are growing steadily. With over 7 euros for a relatively simple cardinal cut, however, a certain shame limit has now been reached. The goulash soup - in its Viennese form, not to be confused with the Hungarian original - is without doubt the best in Vienna, if not the world. However, recently you have to look for the small pieces of meat and can say lucky if there are 3 or 4 of them in the cup. And that for 8 euros for a small soup... Beer and other beverages are also disproportionately expensive, and even tap water costs there. Our colliery amounted to 63 euros for 2 people after soup, one drink each, one meal each and one coffee specialty each, and one was not yet fed up with that... But the price level is something you need to know before you enter such a somewhat elitist place. Nevertheless, Landtmann has to be careful that in the end a few Viennese regulars and regular visitors from Europe remain and it does not atrophy - the trend already exists - to a travel guide destination and photo decor for guests from other parts of the world.

When visiting Vienna, breakfast at Café Landtmann is included instead of breakfast at the hotel. Reservations are advised, otherwise you will just be queuing for 45 minutes. We enjoyed the beautiful interior and the neat service. Breakfast was luxurious but not decadent. Fresh orange juice is really freshly squeezed.

What a wonderful traditional cafe! Staff was wonderful, very organized. Food was amazing. We had the schnitzel, and it was delicious. One of the best we tasted while in Vienna. We shared the apricot dumplings for dessert, so good. I highly recommend making reservations ahead of time or you will wait in a very long line.

We go to Cafè Landtmann for breakfast with a reservation for five people made more than a month in advance.
Upon our arrival, I communicate the name of the reservation and without even checking the agenda they make us sit at a table in the outdoor terrace, not as characteristic and cared for as the inside. We kindly ask to sit inside and we are told that it is not possible since there are no tables of five... subsequently I enter and I notice that tables of 5, reserved with a nameplate (which was not present at our table) and not, there were indeed.
The waiter and what I believe to be the room manager were rude and at times we could perceive "ironic tones" towards us.
Moreover, at the time of payment we realize from the receipts that a tip (almost 2 euros per person) has been charged without our consent and without the included tip being indicated in the menu.
The sacher was not so special and for this type of treatment it is definitely worth going elsewhere to make your own breakfast.

We were recommended this place by friends, but werereally disappointed for many reasons.
1. We ordered some dishes including the steak chips, which we expected to be big fat chips, but they were like regular french fries, not crispy, small and nothing special.
2. The portion of the falafel came with only 3 balls and was rather small for the price.
3. We ordered for dessert 2 cakes including the Apple Strudel with Ice cream, but they served the strudel on its own and told me the ice cream was on its way. It took 5 minutes to get the ice cream, by which time the cake had already cooled down. Why would such a reputable establishment serve in such a manner?
4. On ordering our food, we were asked what we would like to drink, so I requested water and specified that I wanted just plain tap water. We received a small carafe of water enough for 2 people so requested some more. When we received the bill, I was shocked to see that they charged Euro 3.- for each carafe. When questioning this, they just fobbed me off, with, that is what the waiter said. I was so shocked, that we just paid without leaving any further tip.
The place itself has a nice ambience and the waiters are dressed smartly, so I really expected so much more from this place, considering the high prices they charge.
Really don't recommend.

It is rather strange that this café has some good reviews considering the quality of what they serve and the price you pay for it. It is both way overrated and way too expensive. During my visit to Vienna, I have been to a number of cafes - there are many - that cost half of what you pay here and serve much better quality.
We had a couple of small cups of watered-down coffee that cost a whopping 7 euros and a small piece of sacher cake for 8 euros. For that amount of money, you expect something really tasty, but it is not.
The table next to us ordered Wiener Schnitzels which turned out to be a thin tough piece of veal and consisted primairily of a crust of flour. They did not look happy at all.
The staff were rude and totally indifferent and only interested in getting a tip, which is quite unusual in Vienna. Nobody does this, this place is clearly only focused on making money from tourists.

Has been my regular in Vienna. Unfortunately, it's getting worse. At the entrance, each visitor is evaluated by the receptionist and then gladly led to a worse table if it would be expected that no turnover comes or no regular guest etc. It makes me feel less and less welcome.
Once you have put the procedure behind you, you will notice that prices are rising particularly fast here. A coffee/melange now costs more than seven euros.
Service is unfortunately also not always available promptly.
I first take a break from the place and go where I feel more welcome.

Reserved in good time and asked for a nice table, impressive ambience of a well-kept traditional establishment, very friendly welcome, everything fulfilled.
But then the ordered food arrives at the table before the drinks and towards the end the head waiter is already clearing away one guest's dishes while two of us haven't finished our dinner yet.
That leaves me somewhat speechless, especially considering the very high prices. The quality of the food was OK, but nothing more.

This time we enjoyed apple strudel and sundaes in the outdoor area. Our waiter was extremely accommodating, humorous and on fire! For the higher prices one is compensated with an idyllic atmosphere and food of the highest quality. On occasion you should have breakfast here and order the Madame Crusto bread. Top Location!

Attracted by the history of this Viennese café, we were very disappointed. Disillusioned welcome, hardly courteous. Just installed, we had to hurry to order. Correct cuisine, nothing more. I would have liked to finish my side dish (Beilage) but a waiter, probably a converted ex-prison guard, automatically took it away from me half-eaten. Come on, let's clear the tables!
Tourist factory. The situation at the foot of the Burgtheater and its illustrious clients (Sigmund Freud, among others) cannot justify such casualness.
High prices for service

Cafe Landtmann was on my list of places to go because I had read it was a haunt of Sigmund Freud, Einstein and Mahler. I had read that they went there often to have coffee and cake and discuss “big” ideas and philosophy.
My husband and I visited the cafe in late afternoon last week. I told him we had to discuss some “big” ideas there. The cafe is lovely with tuxedo clad waiters who were very patient with the tourist customers. There is outdoor seating as well as semi outdoor sitting in their glass covered patio.
We decided to have an early dinner of noodles mixed with ham which was delicious. Our waiter was indulgent enough to let me study the pastries and cakes in the case before I decided on my dessert. Definitely order the chocolate truffle cake if you like layered cake and creamy chocolate! It was an amazing treat.
My only disappointment was we did not ask to sit inside at one of the booths where I assumed Sigmund sipped his coffee with his friends and that my “big”ideas were rather small compared to Sigmunds.

I made a booking in advanced to avoid queueing outside. My friends and I were there for lunch menu whereby breakfast menu was nearly sold out by 11am. We ordered lunch menu as breakfast bread menu was almost sold out . Not much variety and nothing great. Not worth if you need to queue

Place with a beautiful decoration, although there are rooms without greater grace. Long line to get in, but I think he has an undeserved reputation. Quick and very impersonal service until the moment of charging when they demand tip. The Sacher cake without greater grace, the Chantilly cream tasteless for others. Good Mozart cake and very good apple Strudel. The spectacular mulled wine. I think debut and farewell.

After we waited in line in the cold (4 points) because they didn't accept reservations we went in and put us (2 people ) in a table that didn't fit even coffee... really smaller table in a restaurant you have never seen before...
We asked to change our table but the answer was “either here or go and wait again” and at this table we had to eat salad, appetizers, main dishes and our water and our drinks. When they came the main things didn't fit on the table, the dishes came out of the table
The food is good but not something you will remember, and in no case there is a cost match with quality / taste.
Waiter behavior is unacceptable.
Nor from outside will I pass again.

We feel cheated. We are on a study trip with students. We ordered 10 saher cakes to take away and share for 20 students. When we arrived at the hotel to eat it we found that they had only served us 8 portions and charged us 10. Do they only do this to the Spanish or to all the staff?
