We came in after dinner to enjoy some drinks. Great ambience, busy buzz, friendly and professional staff and lovely music played live by a grand piano player. The room in itself is worth visiting for its beauty. Romanesque domed ceiling, decorated columns and Viennese Tonnet chairs and tables make it a place to see.

This is a traditional cafe which opened in the 19th century primarily for the viennese intellectuals and upper class. The decor remains very traditional and charming. The service is impeccable and the choice of traditional dishes and cakes is excellent. This cafe has its own in-house patisserie and the coffee is delicious. Viennese culture of enjoyment at its finest.

If there is a lineup out the door when you get there, don’t get discouraged because it actually moves pretty fast. Besides, being inside the café and trying out their coffee and desserts are worth the wait. We actually tried some of their entrees as well, and although they were very good, it is a little bit on the pricey... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. It was traditional with excellent service. The choice of cakes was amazing. We didn't feel at all rushed even though there was a lengthy queue to get in. Would highly recommend a visit here.

Again, this is one tourist trap you will love to be trapped in. Cafe Central has buckets of old world charm, beautiful decor, and wonderful food. You may have to wait. I saw a line of about 30 people when I left but the wait is worth it. The Goulash was terrific, the wiener schnitzel was the best I ever... More

Had to queue but well worth it. Cafe has elegant decor and has lively atmosphere. Two main areas and to the rear there is a piano lounge with impressive ceilings and balconies. Strudel and crepes were delicious as was coffee. Excellent staff too. Go - you'll enjoy it.

Friends had said that this was where they had their best meal they had in Vienna so we waited in line (it moved very quickly!). Overall, we found the meal, sweets and beverages nice (loved the hot cocoa with whip cream and a shot of espresso!) but I can't say it was our best meal in Vienna...Good service.

Very busy place but well organised and staff were on the ball. Meals were good but whilst food is well labelled for allergens no one in Vienna seems to try to avoid using known allergens in their cooking. If you require gluten free food prepare yourself for a very limited choice of menu!

We visit Cafe Central nearly every day when we are in Vienna. Their coffee and cakes are excellent as are their light meals, I recommend Cafe Central at least once during your stay!

This famous traditional café with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature café was a meeting point for all ages, regular guests, Viennese locals and visitors. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialities, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience. Daily Live Piano Music from 5pm on! Reservations are strongly recommended to avoid waiting time - upon availability. Many thanks in advance for your understanding!

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
