Fun Fact: This place is over a 100 years old...Sigmund Freud, Leon Trotsky, Joseph Stalin, and Adolf Hitler used to be regulars here. Yes, its touristy, I don't know how many local Viennese visit here, but I did see one(I think). But its beautiful inside, and there's AIR CONDITIONING! And the staff...they were friendly and our waiter was humorous with... More

Ah, this cafe is beautiful! I had heard to expect long lines so we made a reservation for 8:30am, but turned out to not need it. When we arrived the cafe was quiet with only a few patrons. By the time we left an hour later, far more had arrived. I know lots of people come here for the desserts... More

The Food and live music was wonderful, though the flies and dirty sofa covers were a turnoff.Expect long queues outside the cafe so prior booking will be handy. But still a worthy experience due to the legacy it inherits.

This cafe is visited by many tourists, but the staff are friendly and do not push you to move along, but encourage you to enjoy yourself. The cakes and service were outstanding and the setting was one of the nicest of the cafes in Europe we have been to. We were fortunate to be there one late afternoon when an... More

Visited after dinner for coffee and pastry. No line, attentive service, and delicious pastry. The decor is beautiful and it's fun to realize you are dining where Freud, Trotsky, Lenin, Hitler, Tito, etc were regulars!

We enjoyed our meal at the cafe as well as the atmosphere. The waiters ar very busy...so you definitely have to be patient. Depending on when you come you either have to wait in line for awhile or you get seated quickly. We went on two occasions. Once for dinner and once to take-away desserts. I would definitely recommend if... More

A mere stones throw away from the Hofburg palace, this lovely period cafe has been host to many celebrities including Sigmund Freud ! A visit to Vienna would be incomplete without, at the very least, a Coffee & pastry here !

It was fun watching the morning organized, will dress Austrian business people transforming to the laid-back tourists, not quite so well dressed or organized. :-)

Description
This famous traditional café with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature café was a meeting point for all ages, regular guests, Viennese locals and visitors. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialities, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience. Daily Live Piano Music from 5pm on! Reservations are strongly recommended to avoid waiting time - upon availability. Many thanks in advance for your understanding!

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
