We arrived at the fully occupied restaurant (directly opposite the presidential palace) without a reservation. But Jeff welcomed us in the most friendly way and immediately found a table for us. We ordered fussili with rabbit ragout and a chicken broth with chicken dumplings as starters - both really excellent. As main courses we had seebass with vegetables and the beef Wellington which has unjustly gone completely out of fashion. The fish was juicy and the fillet, medium as ordered, melted in the mouth. For the dessert we shared a crème brulée which also was absolutely well prepared - creamy and not too sweet. Jeff recommended Maltese wines to us. Both the white an the red went wonderfully well with our dishes. The prices are in the upper midrange, which is justified by the quality of the cuisine and the service. We felt very comfortable on the terrace. The restaurant in the basement hast a lot of flair, but would be a bit too noisy for us. No doubt that we would return.

This highly regarded causal restaurant was let down by poor service on the night we ate there. The menu is wide ranging with plenty of choice for vegetarians, and fish dishes were beautifully prepared and presented. The wine list matches the food and there is enough choice in the cheaper ranges. Staff were friendly but gaps between courses and long waits to take our orders, despite it being a fairly quiet night, made the evening less grand than one might have expected from the Michelin rating. Looking at other reviews, we must have hit a dud night, as we found the food as good as others have. We would still go again, despite our experience.

Location More or less in the middle of the city. Ambiente: We had a table outside in the warm night but the cellar looked nice, warm and cozy. But even outside they had a nice setting. Food: Great appetizers, very tasty, be aware they are fast with the food. Great shrimp tacos as one of three. Very well executed and we could have had more if we had not decided to go for the beef wellington. And wisely decided to share. Great beef, perfectly done to our liking and nicely presented. If we had had a main each after 1.5 appetizers/person it would have been too much. Staff: Brilliant. It was so much fun looking at that efficient and enthusiastic crew and interacting with them I actually asked for the manager to come to our table (which seemed to make them a bit worried) and complimented him on his crew. Actually the first time I did this but that staff was outstanding. So all in all definetly not a cheap evening but if you want to do yourself something special this is a place to go to.

We were expecting to enjoy a fabulous meal but were underwhelmed from beginning to end. On arrival the waiters were engrossed in their mobiles texting & chatting & didn’t see us for quite some time. We chose to sit outside & enjoyed watching children cooling off in the water spouts of the fountain in the square. Drinks menus were plonked down but no food menus until we asked for them. The accents of the overseas waiters were so thick & specials rushed through that we couldn't understand a word & we're very used to multiple accents from around the world. The scallop starters were clearly pre-cooked & then hastily warmed up in a tasteless sauce. We chose the Lobster Wellington for mains & it was delicious. The side of thick cut chips wasn't, the chips looked like McDonald's shoestring chips. The famous Strawberry Cheesecake was overly sweet & the centre was jam-like not a coulis as described. All in all a poor eating experience.

Classy outside restaurant but expensive and not delivering completely its image. we had the curry and pea samosas - 14 Euros and had 4 tiny one bit samosas served in a small paper cone. Just too much at 14 Euros and because of their size all you really tasted was the pastry. Mains were better, the filet steak good the artichoke strudel just OK. Maims expensive once you start adding sides, all charged extra and makes the meal a litle pricy The chablis and Borolo were both very good

- Location, great - Service, good could be better in my opinion. Specially when something is not available the long wait until i got notified and other persons on the table receive their menu. - Food / price the food served for that price is below standard, its good but for the price paid think they could do better. They are recommended for a Michelin star, starters and the tempura cauliflower had no taste. Meat was excellent btw. - people smoking and vaping, I am a smoker myself. Only when sitting on a terrace that is almost enclosed I do not smoke and consider other guests. Think for a restaurant that is considered with a Michelin star there should be a ban for smoking on their premisses. Or a smoking area in order not to bother any other guests while eating.

Disappointing Experience at 59 Republic - Not Worth the Hype I recently visited 59 Republic in Valletta, and while the food was undeniably delicious, the overall experience was far from what I expected, especially considering it's listed on the Michelin Guide. First and foremost, the service was dreadful. There was not a single Maltese staff member in sight, and the energy from the servers was lacking. They had to read the specials off an iPad, which felt impersonal and unprofessional. To make matters worse, my cocktail was incorrect when it arrived. After informing them of the mistake, they still got it wrong, and instead of making a new one, they simply removed the extra fruit from the drink, which I found to be lazy and disappointing. One waiter was dragging his feet as he walked, which gave a very unprofessional vibe, and the music playing did not match the ambiance of the restaurant at all, further contributing to the uncomfortable atmosphere. Finally, after spending a considerable amount of money, we weren't offered any complimentary liquor or coffee – a common gesture at many high-end restaurants. This level of service just didn’t match the caliber I was expecting from a Michelin-listed establishment. I won’t be returning or recommending this place anytime soon.

Excited about our last night, it was disappointing from the beginning: bad service, many running around but not resolving and tables without clearing..., but the worst thing is that they are NOT gluten-free and they confirmed to us and thus they announce that they are adapted and prepared. My husband started to get sick before finishing the few we ordered (only three dishes on the menu and they seemed vegan to gluten-free 😣) and the person who served us laughed..., The bread they served him was not gluten-free and we asked On up to three occasions the person who came later seemed to be the person in charge of the room. So on our last night my husband was bad until we got home. It seems to many that being celiac is a “joke” and that nothing happens but it takes them a while to recover and their digestive health, among others, deteriorates (which is what many do not know). Not to mention that the dish I ordered, cordon blue, inedible: the soggy meat and the raw puff pastry. In short, a lot of façade, and for us the worst part was deception, knowing that he could get sick. And we warned them that way, but they didn't care. We paid and left. A shame because the rest of the restaurants we booked were exceptional and very careful with “gluten free”.

Lovely setting, average food, however service lets it self down massively. Within 5 minutes of us sitting down, the waiter came over to ask if we wanted a cocktail or a drink however we had no menus. He went back and got us a menu and we chose our drinks. We ordered a wine, a beer and a still water. The beer arrived in a wine glass, which was very strange, but all were very nice. We chose our food - calamari (off the sharer section) sea bass, chicken cordon bleu and a portion of mash potatoes. The waiter failed to share the specials of the day with us, and when we over heard them being told to another table, there were something we would have chose however at this point it was too late. The calamari was $17 and advertised as a sharer, however the portion was tiny, not enough to share. We waited a while for our main courses to arrive and when they did arrive they were delivered to a table behind us and left to sit for around 4 minutes. When the table realised it wasn’t their order, the meals went back to the kitchen and then brought back out to our table. The food was warm however not piping hot as it had been left sitting on the wrong table. We ate our food and no member of staff came to check if the food was okay, which was disappointing especially because you pay nearly $30 for a main course to come with no sides. Overall this restaurant is over priced and has bad customer service when you are seated (the man who took our booking and to our table was lovely). Overall over priced, average food but even worse customer service. There are plenty of nicer restaurants in Valetta to visit.

This restaurant is NOT Michelin worthy - in fact - I am very surprised about the positive reviews and I am wondering if they are just inconsistent which is a big no no for a restaurant charging the prices they do. First - the positive - the outdoor area, which we couldn’t sit in as was full , was very nice and the fit out inside was lovely , really well done. That’s where the positives end - the waiter did not know the specials and read them out from an iPad , tacky and not fine dining appropriate - the wine we ordered they did not have , not a deal breaker but was just another little thing that added to the tone of the evening. We picked a different wine which was still nice. - the Vietnamese rolls came out with bread crumbs on it , the person who thought this was a good idea needs to apologize to all of Vietnam for this travesty. They were bland and not what I was expecting. - the bar staff was on his phone texting , not a huge deal but a bit weird , I’ve never seen that in a supposedly Michelin restaurant - the scallops were disgusting , wow , they were overcooked and the topping was like slop and overpowering . I am thinking perhaps these were precooked then warmed up later as they just were not right. , They also were extremely hot to touch the shell which they should have warned about. - we both had the lobster Wellington , I have seen people on here praising the Wellington …. Pastry is not supposed to have the consistency of a tortilla , it is supposed to be crunchy and flaky - I don’t even know if they made it with puff ? It was very clearly reheated in a microwave or something ? It was not fresh out of an oven that much I can tell you. - the waiter removed our wine before it was finished … he obviously didn’t realize but just shows how they were just trying to churn you through - we were looking forward to a cocktail to end the night but the experience was so bad that we got the check and left Overall the staff were not to the level you would expect The food was terrible and overpriced I wouldn’t even accept this quality at the local RSL or Pub. Disappointed as we were really looking forward to it.

Choose this restaurant for our last night in Malta to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. The service was fantastic from Hasin and Sangi who treated us to a celebratory drink of champagne at the start. Menu excellent and portions really typical of Maltese generosity making the meal really good value if you have a big appetite. Also treated to a free coffee at the end of the meal. So kind and such a great way to end our Maltese vacation. Cannot recommend too highly. We ate inside which was cooler than in the square on a balmy Maltese evening.

I joined a Maltese friend for a late lunch at 59 Republic. The restaurant has a gorgeous view, facing the main square and Grandmaster's Palace in the heart of Valletta. The people watching was superb. There is an inside section of the restaurant, although I couldn't imagine sitting inside. The service was very good, the food was perfectly cooked and presented, and the wine selection extensive. Importantly, prices were fair despite a location that some may feel is a tourist trap. All things considered, I wouldn't hesitate to return when in Malta. Highly recommended. Do be sure to make reservations, especially on the weekends.

Decent food but poor experience. Definitely not a Michelin guide restaurant. We ordered 3 starters and the waiter asumed we wanted main course meals and came back with main course size plates. One of the plates had some plastic in it, maybe accidentally dropped but still, not a Michelin guide experience. Wine list extremely expensive and poor quality compared to all the other Michelin guide restaurants. Compared it via Vivino. Other type of alcohol the same. Only 2 types of beer, Heineken and Bira Moretti, which you can also find in a gas station or grocery store. But not at 10€ a 200ml glass 😂😂 The restaurant maybe had been a Michelin guide quality but now it’s way below. The only thing that is Michelin guide experience are the prices.

We dined here over the Christmas and new year period and had a great experience. The ambience of the restaurant was festive and chilled. The food was absolutely delicious. We had the beef wellington with a side of fries and vegetables, and it was all cooked to perfection. We would definitely recommend it! Thank you for a lovely meal.

Loved the ambiance on the outdoor patio, and the food was delicious. I was able to find scrumptious, well seasoned, and well presented vegetarian and gluten-free items on the menu. Special shout out to the sauce in the cauliflower dish and the gluten-free bread, which might be the most tasty I've ever had. And, as far as other food choices, my partner really enjoyed the lamb. Plus, even though it was a bit chilly the night we ate there, the heaters warmed us up nicely. Also, the waitstaff were very flexible as far as getting us seated where we were most comfortable, and they were very attentive throughout our meal. Overall, it was a very enjoyable night.
