We loved the ambiance of the restaurant and felt that we should have ordered one of their tasting menu dinners instead of having a salad and mussels. The salad was very fresh and tasty but the mussels were nothing more than average/disappointing.

We were walking down the Main Street looking for something to eat before leaving town. Laekjarbrekka had tables outside and the weather was nice. I had the fish and chips. Lightly fried and tasty cod fish and chips though I opted for a salad instead of fries. My friends seemed to enjoy their catch of the day, also cod. Pricey... More

The food was decent but not amazing. Amongst our crew, we had Arctic Char, muscles, lamb, salad and all was good but not amazing. The service was not great, we wait 30 minutes to get the check and then another 30 to actually pay. Our waitress was out to lunch.

We chose Laekjarbrekka for a "once in a trip" family dinner, with our son and his girlfriend who live in Iceland. We decided on the set menu with wine. The starters were good, but we refused the fermented shark, for ecological reasons - the Greenland shark is endangered and unsustainable. The langoustine soup was fantastic, the lamb and langoustine tails... More

This restaurant serves a well presented menu at a fair price. Reyjkavik is expensive, yet this restaurant shows how good food can be cooked beautifully, presented well, and at a fair price. We found the service excellent, and the attention to detail superb. We watched how the staff interacted with other customers and their attention to detail and care is... More

My partner has been to Iceland several times, while I have only passed through the airport. My first dinner in Reykjavik was at the Laekjarbrekka and now I am spoiled. I had my first Icelandic langoustines and they were memorably fresh, and perfectly prepared. Upon request, the chef prepared a langoustine appetizer. I also ordered the Icelandic lamb and langoustine... More

I had the Icelandic Taster and the Seafood Mash.... The taster was an experience with the fermented shark. The service was excellent.

During a long weekend in Reykjavik I called at this restaurant on spec on Friday night. It was very busy but they managed to accommodate us. The atmosphere was lovely, the staff were very efficient but very friendly and the food was lovely. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We had an absolutely wonderful time at Laekjarbrekka. The food was fantastic and our waiter, Ingi, was wonderful and welcoming! The restaurant had a great atmosphere, the taster board was full of interesting Icelandic foods and everything was at a very reasonable price, and also in a great location on the main shopping street! Highly recommend, perfect in every way!

Thank Dan M

The housing Laekjarbrekka was built as a dwelling in 1834, by the influential Danish ship owner and merchant P.C Knutzon. Hel also build a bakery and a turf house in the same lot and brought the Danish baker T.D Bernhöft to Iceland to practice his trade here. Bernhöft, who was for a long time the only baker in Reykjavík, bought the houses in 1845. The Bernhöft family continued in the baking business at this location for two generations, building a retail shop onto the dwelling house in 1855. This addition is today the part of the restaurant facing the main street. The building was used as a dwelling until 1961, and a small shop was there until the time of reconstruction began in 1980. By then, the house had fallen into disrepair, and had been neglected for a long time. Its future had been uncertain until 1979, when it and several other houses in the same block were declared protected buildings. During reconstruction, every attempt was made to preserve the original appearance. It is therefore with great pleasure to invite you to dine in this beautifully restored house, which has an eventful 180-year history behind it.
